Never-Married Women: "No One Ever Asked."

Do women in 2024 consider never-married women to have some sort of stigma?

I have a lot of never-married women in my extended family, I have one sister that never married, but she did get 2 proposals when she was in her twenties and my parents forbid it (I'm too young to remember the details.) So maybe that's different... but she's been bitter about it for as long as I can remember, and still is to this day...

I have a niece in her mid-20's and she'd been dating this guy who I met and I thought he seemed decent (also in mid-20's), he was pushing her to marry him, and then he broke up with her. I recounted my sister's story to my wife, and I suggested that niece just go ahead and marry the guy, get a prenup so their incomes and debts are segregated (so he doesn't go buy a Ferrari on her credit.) Maybe in a year or two it ends in divorce, I don't know what a divorce costs for two people with no kids, no assets, low income... $5k? $10k? My wife told me to go pound sand for my advice...

I'm reminded of a tombstone that said something like what she refused to give up to men, she's giving up to the worms.

Holy shit, if my french reads this right, it’s the most sexist tombstone I ever read!! 😱

I thought it was hilarious.

Not aware of one for a guy but I can make one up:

Gene Simmons made a good point, “There’s plenty of jokes about married men but none about single men”.

It's a pity thing. They're already down, no need to rub it in.

Idk, but in my country it’s the most popular family situation. I live in the Kyrgyzstan and half of women here never been married. Nobody aren’t shaming or blaming them

reply

Mid-20s is young. They broke up, therefore she made the right decision not to marry him

my sister got married at age 31. my father said...........about time.

I remember watching "Meet Me In Saint Louis" and Judy Garland's sister was deemed a spinster because she was 19 and not married...

I'm in my 40s, US, and many of those I went to school with have no kids and many of them are single. If anything, people call them "lucky"

"I suggested that niece just go ahead and marry the guy, get a prenup so their incomes and debts are segregated"

Why the heck did you suggest that your niece marry a guy who already broke up with her???

reply

The REASON he broke up was because he wanted to be married to HER and she didn't want to. I know that's a dumb reason, but he's mid-20's also, I wasn't too smart at that age either. Couples break up and get back together after much worse breakups...

reply

I was half-joking up there, but this question is totally serious: Why the hell would you be pressing someone to get married, when they don't want to get married???

If people don't want to get married to someone, they usually have excellent reasons. If they feel that way, they're usually aware of some reason that the marriage will not work, either due to something about their partner, something about themselves, or something about their circumstances.

Marriage is tough. You have people who never get married.5% People who get married and stay married until they die 5%. People who get married and get divorced 60%, and people who get married and stay together even if they don't love or care about each other. 30%.

Man. Don’t ever volunteer to give the toast at a wedding.
