Chicago - Old Days
https://youtu.be/XoXsyMP8v3s

Trivia: Peter Cetera told James Pankow (trombone/arranger and writer of the song). "I'm not singing this shit, man! Howdy Doody?? Baseball cards? These are the corniest fucking lyrics ever!" (liner notes in "Group Portrait")

"Old days
Good times I remember
Fun days
Filled with simple pleasure
Drive-in movies
Comic books and blue jeans
Howdy Doody
Baseball cards and birthdays
Take me back
To the world gone away
Memories
Seem like yesterday
Oh, old days
Good times I remember
Gold days
Days I'll always treasure
Funny faces
Full of love and laughter
Funny places
Summer nights and streetcars
Take me back
To the world gone away
Our good memories
Seem like yesterday
Old days (on my mind and in my heart to stay)
Ah, ah, ah
Old days (darkened dreams of good times gone away)
Ah, ah, ah
Old days (days of love and feeling fancy free)
Ah, ah, ah
Old days (days of magic still so close to me)
Ah, ah, ah
Old days (on my mind and in my heart to stay)
Ah, ah, ah
Old days (darkened dreams of good times gone away)
Ah, ah, ah
Old days (days of love and feeling fancy free)
Ah, ah, ah
Old days (days of magic still so close to me)
Ah, ah, ah"

I love this song! I've been a Chicago fan since being a kid in the 70s.

I forgot my favorite one! Written by Danny Seraphine, sang wonderfully by Robert Lamm with Peter Cetera on backups. Terry Kath and Chaka Khan sing a bit at the end, too.

TAKE ME BACK TO CHICAGO

Take me back to Chicago
And lay my soul to rest
Where my life was free and easy
Remember me at my best
Take me back to Chicago
Where my music was all I had
I tried to be good as I could
And sometimes that made me sad
Take me back to Chicago, to Chicago
Take me back
Take me back
Take me back
To Chicago
I still dream of the lake of peacefulness
The warm summer breeze
'Cause my life was so much simpler then
Street corners and tastee freeze
Take me back to Chicago
'Cause hustlin's not my style
LA was just a bit too hard
I wish I could be a child
Livin' back in Chicago, in Chicago
Take me back
Take me back
Take me back
To Chicago, to Chicago (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me, I wanna go)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back, take me)
Take me back (take me back)

"Saturday Night"--The Eagles. One of their more underrated great songs, IMO:

So true! I thought I was a big fan, but I was surprised I didn't know this song when I saw them on the "History" tour, and think I saw one of Glenn's last performances. Top 10 show ever, but I also didn't know "Bitter Creek", so I was taking it all in at the concert. When I got home, I listened and wish I could ... see it performed live. If it's not on YouTube now, maybe one day? I love reading comments from old 70s concerts.

Awesome that you got to see The Eagles before Glenn Frey passed away! I really love the "Bernie Leadon years" of The Eagles and both those songs were part of his era. He gave them a genuine "country-like sound" that they lost after his departure (I do love the "Joe Walsh era" as well, to be clear).

reply

I guess I love the Don Felder years. A very diverse guitarist, who brought it with him to the band, with a diverse range of songs..

"King of Hollywood" is an underrated song of theirs. Glenn has the best solo, but then again, he plays the solo on "I Can't Tell You Why", although Felder's solos on "Hotel California" and "One of These Nights" are legendary.

I liked some of Walsh's Barnstorm stuff - with piano, flute, not the verse/chorus stuff, but it kinda stopped and became self-parody - gosh, I've ALWAYS hated "Life's Been Good". I'm sure it's the gold records on the wall, line :)

I do like "Pretty Maids All In a Row"

reply

Yes, I love Don Felder also. What a guitar player...probably the best guitarist that The Eagles had.

I love all the songs you mentioned also. I particularly love the guitar solos on "I Can't Tell You Why," but especially that second solo. That's one of my all-time favorite guitar solos. Like you mentioned, Glenn Frey played the solos on the recording, but I always found it interesting that Don Felder played the solos in concert (Frey usually played the keyboards in concert). Felder's solos sounded similar to the recording...but I think Felder was more of a "string bender" with his solos, while Frey slid into the notes. "I Can't Tell You Why" is one of my all-time favorite songs from one of my all-time favorite bands.

reply

Exactly... I think Glenn (like David Gilmour) wasn't very technical, so he had to go to "emotion route" - less notes, more bending, and yes, the second solo is the best, even that repeated motif
"da da da DA da da, da da da DA da da"

One of the 10 best concerts, and one of my favorite songs.

Oh, the sheer utter irony of Peter Cetera (of all people!) saying THAT......!!🤩

Anyhow, how about Bob Seger "Night Moves"😎

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_mRFWQoXq4c

I was a little too tall, could've used a few pounds
Tight pants points, hardly renowned
She was a black-haired beauty with big dark eyes
And points of her own, sittin' way up high

Way up firm and high
Out past the cornfields where the woods got heavy
Out in the back seat of my '60 Chevy
Workin' on mysteries without any clues

Workin' on our night moves
Tryin' to make some front page drive-in news
Workin' on our night moves
In the summertime
Umm, in the sweet summertime

We weren't in love, oh no, far from it
We weren't searchin' for some pie in the sky summit
We were just young and restless and bored
Livin' by the sword

And we'd steal away every chance we could
To the backroom, to the alley or the trusty woods
I used her, she used me but neither one cared
We were gettin' our share

Workin' on our night moves
Tryin' to lose the awkward teenage blues
Workin' on our night moves
Mmm, and it was summertime
Mmm, sweet, summertime, summertime

Oh, wonderin'
Felt the lightning, yeah
And I waited on the thunder
Waited on the thunder

I woke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered?
Started hummin' a song from 1962
Ain't it funny how the night moves?

When you just don't seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closin' in

Mmm, night moves, mmm
(Night moves) night moves
(Night moves) yeah
(Night moves) I remember
(Night moves) ah, I sure remember the night moves
(Night moves) ain't it funny how you remember?
(Night moves) funny how you remember
(Night moves) I remember, I remember, I remember, I remember
(Night moves) oh, oh, oh

we were workin', workin' and practicin'
(Night moves) workin' and practicin'
(Night moves) oh, on the night moves, night moves
(Night moves) oh
(Night moves) I remember, yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember
(Night moves) ooh
(Night moves) I remember, Lord I remember, Lord I remember
(Night moves) ha, ha, ooh-hoo
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
Uh huh, uh huh
I remember, I remember

Exactly! No one ever plays those 80s songs (but they do "play a mean tune, kid")

Bob Seger is a good one. I'm a Michigander, know all his stuff. My next door neighbor and band-mate/best friend got lessons from Craig Frost every Monday (Seger, Grand Funk).. He was in my last band around here, too.

I Still Call Australia Home - Peter Allen

https://youtu.be/P42LZgqYMiQ

I've been to cities that never close down
From New York to Rio and old London town
But no matter how far
Or how wide I roam
I still call Australia home.

I'm always travelin'
I love being free
So I keep leavin' the sun and the sea
But my heart lies waiting over the phone
I still call Australia home.

All the sons and daughters spinning 'round the world
Away from their families and friends
But as the world gets older and colder
It's good to know where your journey ends.

Someday we'll all be together once more
When all the ships come back to the shore
Then I realize something I've always known
I still call Australia home.

No matter how far
Or how wide I roam
I still call Australia home.

Peter Allen was a great song writer both lyrically and musically and his singing voice wasn't bad either although not the best one going around that's for sure. I remember seeing him on television ( The Don Lane Show I think it was ) when asked about that song he called it " I Still Call What's-its-name Home ".

reply

I like that he had a sense of humour about it.

I agree he was a talented songwriter if not the greatest singer. Apart from that song (which has to be his signature song.. I won’t accept the camp and cringeworthy I Go To Rio even though I suspect it was his biggest hit) my favourite Allen track is Tenterfield Saddler. I love the honest, personal lyrics and the melody is quite beautiful.

reply

He was cheeky and charming, a winning combination.
