Discontinued items you miss.

I'm aware that there was a topic like this recently but I'm too lazy to find it and bring it up. Anyway, name some:

Popeye's Cajun Fried Rice
Popeye's Cajun Fish
Popeye's Chicken Bowl (I think that was what it was called: red beans and rice mixed with chicken and topped with cheese. Came with a packet of sour cream to add even more flavor.)
Popeye's Jambalaya
Popeye's Gumbo

I think you may notice a pattern with me here.....

Marathon candy bars

McDonald's fries when they were made with real beef tallow

Graf's "swiss cream" soda

For years I'd go into a shop in the UK, ask for a Marathon and be handed the ridiculously renamed chocolate bar. I always thought snickers sounded like a particularly unfortunate stomach upset.

The newspapers / magazines. Reading on the Internet is not the same.

Candy cigarettes. I’ve had to switch to the real ones now.

This one goes way back…

- Howard Johnson’s chocolate chip ice cream. It was THE best CC ice cream ever made.

Also:
- Gilette Sensor Excel razor. Best razor ever made. You can still find the blade cartridges here and there, but they discontinued the original handle.
- the original Banana Republic catalogue. It was filled with unique travel items and rugged clothes. I thought the J. Peterman catalogue from Seinfeld (Elaine’s job) was based on it. I bought a leather passport holder that is still in great shape. I had a nice leather belt from there too that outlasted every other belt I ever owned. Now it it just The Gap for business attire and sells cheaply made fast fashions.

There is an episode of Mad Men from ten years ago called “Far Away Places” that featured a Howard Johnson’s restaurant.

reply

I recently watched it! Prob what triggered my nostalgia for their cc ice cream.

There is still an abandoned Howard Johnson's off of I-10 a little east of Los Angeles (Baldwin Park?) I think the hotel building might be a Ramada Express. I think the restaurant is just feeding termites.

Apparently Wyndham operates about 7 Howard Johnson's in Southern California. News to me.
