Mortal Thoughts
12 Monkeys
The Sixth Sense

Looking at his list of credits, I realize I haven't seen many of his well known movies.

Wow, mad respect for starting a well thought out movie thread here in GD👍

In no particular order:

Die Hard
The Sixth Sense
12 Monkeys
Pulp Fiction
Death Wish

*that really old Moonlighting TV detective series he did with Cybbil Sheperd was really good too

reply

did you actually enjoy the death wish remake? or is there a bit of irony/winking in that choice?

i've almost watched it a few times, but the reviews/ratings have kinda scared me off...

if you tell me you genuinely like it, i'll give it a shot.

reply

I like Willis, so I will usually watch anything he is in including some of his crappy stuff...He has star appeal for me

His Death Wish movie was a very cool vigilante action pic but by no means as good as the original Bronson version

Put it on for 10 minutes, see if you dig it

reply

I liked it too.

reply

I was going to as this same question. 👍

reply

Here was my review for it:

Not only have you seen Death Wish 5 times already but you’ve seen this movie here at least a dozen times before. But that’s not the question. The real question is do you want to see Bruce Willis torture and kill some bad bad guys? My answer is yes. Plus the ending was very sweet in a non-corny kind of way and I like the chemistry with D’Onofrio, another one of my favourite actors. My rating: 6.5/10

reply

i absolutely would watch bw kill bad guys. unfortunately doesn't seem to be out there on any of the streaming services i use, but i'll keep an eye open for it.

reply

I like the chemistry with D’Onofrio

BINGO.

1 12 monkeys 5/5 - gilliam's greatest movie, fulfillment of the vision he had in brazil, one of my very favourite sci-fi films
2 pulp fiction 5/5
3 the fifth element 4
4 the player 4
5 the sixth sense 4
6 moonrise kingdom 4
7 beavis and butthead do america 4
8 die hard 4
9 planet terror
10 looper 3.5
11 sin city - 3.5 - time hasn't been too kind to this film's reputation it seems, but i still get a kick out of it
12 glass 3
13 unbreakable 3
14 lucky number slevin 2.5
15 armageddon 2

i know i caught most at least a few of the die hard sequels years ago, but i'll be arsed if i can remember anything about them, other than the 2 gallon/5 gallon pail riddle.

reply

12 Monkeys was terrific, really mind bending

Bruce was great in Armageddon, what a great silly movie that was

How has time not been kind to Sin City? That movie was really super Steroid-Macho entertaining action violence all the way through?

reply

re: sin city - i probably used the wrong words, maybe...i just meant that a lot of people seem to have a sniffy attitude to it now. i might be wrong about that, but i get the impression that it's not looked at fondly by lots of people.

i still think it's a fun watch, absolutely.

reply

The world does seem to be crowded by sensitive chump boys and angry shouting bitches recently but a good movie lasts forever Amigo

Sin City is a fine movie

reply

Terry Gilliam is in my top 5 fav directors and although it’s a great film, 12 monkeys is really not my favorite from him.

Moonrise kingdom was a blast!

Looper I didn’t really like.

Sin city is awesome!

reply

do you like brazil? that film is a lock i've never been able to pick, but i know lots of people love it.

reply

I slightly prefer Brazil over 12 monkeys. Although I’ve seen 12 monkeys at least three times over the past 15 years and I only saw Brazil once and it was like six years ago. I immediately bought the DVD for my Terry Gilliam collection though.

But you rated 16 Blocks higher?

reply

But you rated 16 Blocks higher?

^^

because I think 16 blocks is the better overall movie but I enjoy them both the same

my ratings are based on the overall quality of the movie

and my rankings are based on my enjoyment and my favorites

basically for me there's a big difference between best and my favorite

I completely agree with most people that Die Hard and Pulp Fiction are probably Willis is best overall movies but they're just not my favorites and I don't watch them very often

I enjoy a movie like GI Joe retaliation a lot more than Die Hard or Pulp Fiction even though like GI Joe retaliation is clearly not on those movies levels quality wise , those two movies are the much superior movies but for me GI Joe retaliation is the movie I'll watch more in the years to come and movie I enjoy more

anyways I hope that explains it

reply

I see. I found at the bottom part, the list also got more occurences of higher rating lower ranking, and vice versa.

It makes sense. It's just that most people would rank based on their ratings. 10/10 = best and favorite. 0/10 = worst and least favorite. But your's fine too, if only rather unusual.

Anyhow, mine would be:
1. 12 Monkeys
2. Armageddon
3. Die Hard: With a Vegeance
4. The Fifth Element
5. The Sixth Sense
6. Die Hard
7. Sin City
8. RED
9. Last Man Standing

The Sixth Sense (1999) 7/10
Looper (2012) 7/10

reply

I can't stand Willis, never could.

The only film of his that I've ever seen more than once is "The Fifth Element", and that's a movie that would have been a hell of a lot better if someone else had played his role.
