Do you bother with a Christmas tree?

And do you have a real tree or fake?

I always loved a twinkly Christmas tree. But since I moved into my tiny flat it seems too much hassle to make space for. I usually just put fairy lights around my huge bush of a potted plant that's in the corner of my living room.

I'm more pagan than Christian anyway so it still fits with my mojo.

Heck yeah. Not as big as we use to get.

reply

Always. Plastic fake tree because they're reusable.

reply

LOL...of course.

Yep. Decorating our home for Christmas is not complete until the tree and everything else is up.

My family actually has an interesting history with Christmas trees. During my First Year on this planet, the day after Christmas, my mom bought an artificial tree on sale, and we used it over and over again for over 3 decades. Then, just 2 years ago, the dog accidentally knocked it over and broke it. Luckily, our next-door neighbors had a spare tree that was only a few years old, and had lights built into it, and we now use that tree.

There's a bit of a debate I've had with mom, because I like to put presents under the tree, like any sensible person. But recently she has stolen the space under the tree to show off her little Christmas village, and I'm annoyed because all those little figures and ceramic houses are vulnerable to getting kicked and broken in that area. It would make more sense to put them in some place like in the lower level of our glass coffee table. Sadly, she will not listen to me. I think I might need to do something drastic this year.

We actually have a way of compensating for small apartments when it comes to Christmas trees. Did you know that they actually make trees small enough to sit on end tables? These days, Christmas trees come in all shapes and sizes :D. They even have miniaturized ornaments for such trees!

That sort of thing actually ties into my family's history with Christmas trees, in a way. Back in '06, we were already getting ready to move to Texas from Illinois, but the house was not ready to be packed up yet, and the power company needed dad soon. So he moved down early, and stayed in an "apartment" at Candlewood Suites (and they actually do this for many "single" people who are working, but have no housing). In December of that year, we came down to visit dad early, and gave him several Christmas presents early, including his own tree! :D I still love it too. It's a silver fiber-optic tree with a color-wheel inside its base, is only 2 feet tall, and it looks beautiful when all the lights are off in the room and it's been turned on. Mom bought some adorable tiny ornaments to put on it, which I happily put on each year. So we celebrated Christmas early with dad, so he wouldn't be lonely that year. :D We still have that little tree, and I'd recommend it to anybody with a small apartment. We even kept the box for easy storage.

Ahh that sounds lovely. I did have a small table top tree but it looks so fake I only used it the first year I was given it.

I've seen quite a few small (about 3 foot) real trees so I might get one if the impulse takes me one day 🌲

We have a third tree that first belonged to my dad when he was living on his own in an apartment, before he met mom, and it's very nice. The tree is 3 feet tall, and mom turned it into her "quilting" tree. She got into making quilts for charities a decade ago after retiring, and she bought a bunch of ornaments shaped like colorful, ceramic quilts, and that's what we decorate the 3-foot tree with.

In summer of 2016, she and dad went on a cruise to Alaska (it was a bucket list thing) and she bought a bunch of adorable Christmas ornaments of arctic animals while she was up there, so we include them on her quilt tree :D

I love seeing a Christmas tree all lit up when the room is dark. It's SO pretty!

I would never think to put my Christmas village on the floor under the tree. No room for gifts! I used to put mine on the mantel, and then I put it on the sofa table, but this year my sofa table is full of plants. Oh, and I no longer have a fireplace, so the village won't be coming out this years.

Table-top trees are just as traditional as the floor-standing ones:

Yep, nothing wrong with a table-top tree. Sometimes one has to work with the space one has. I'm finally in a place where I don't have to re-arrange the furniture to fit the Christmas tree.

reply

Yep :) When you don't have space for a regular tree, get a tabletop one ;)
