Why do you buy movies?

I own less than 10 and they are all special editions.

I guess when it's so easy to stream movies or pick them up at the library like I do, I don't understand having $$$'s invested in owning them.

I know some of you have said you have large collections - simply curious - why ?

STREAMING IS HOT TRASH...THEY FOUND A WAY TO GET YOUR MONEY FROM YOU WHILE STILL CONTROLLING THE MEDIA...WHAT,WHEN,HOW YOU SEE....PHYSICAL MEDIA IS ETERNAL...VCRS,DVD PPLAYERS,BLU RAY PLAYERS CAN BE PICKED UP BY THE STACK FOR LESS THAN 20 DOLLARS AT EVERY THRIFT STORE...MY DAUGHTER AND I'S PHYSICAL MEDIA LIBRARY HAS MORE THAN 20,000 TITLES CURRENTLY...I AM THE MASTER OF MY OWN MEDIA DESTINY.

Streaming services have pretty limited selections. I don't have a really large collection, but most of my movies are favorites I got at a decent price or just really wanted to own and things that are hard to find for renting or streaming.

reply

I don't own a lot of DVDs either, I only buy my favourite movies that I'd really like to own physically.

reply

I haven't for ages but in the past I did because it was the only way to own films/have them on standby to watch whenever. I don't consider my collection huge but I have maybe 100 titles movies and tv shows.

Recording movies off TV to have as a collection was big too in the 80's especially, VCR's being a relatively new toy.

I never got into streaming services because what they offer from month-to-month is inconsistent. My DVD and BluRay collection is rather small, but it includes director's cuts and extended versions.

I own movies that I enjoy watching repeatedly. I'm not relying on some streaming service that offers a film for a limited time and then drops it.

reply

Because I like them and want to watch them all more than once. Why else? Plus I don't trust library or Video store rentals. Their DVDs tend to be too scratched to watch in my experience. Plus sometimes streaming services don't have some movies. For instance I own Tales from the Crypt from 1972 on DVD because it isn't available on Amazon and I don't want to pay an extra $10 a month for more streaming services. I already pay for Disney+, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Why should I have to pay $10 for some streaming site just to get one movie I want to watch? Plus there's the fact streaming services constantly take down movies and replace them with other ones.

Another problem with material from libraries or rented: whether tape or digital, they’re transferring all the dust and gunk from the hardware of everyone else who’s used them into YOUR hardware, gumming up your VCR heads and gunking up your laser lens. As Otter’s said, you want to preserve your hardware. DO NOT rent or borrow. And buy tape head/laser lens cleaning media AND cans of compressed air to blow the dust out of your media reader(s). It’s called hardware hygiene.

reply

That makes sense, but apparently I'm not that particular - LOL. I frequently get movies from the library and have never had any issues.

No doubt, the Board of Hardware Health would place my stuff on the condemned list.

reply

Most people aren’t that particular, but that’s often because no one has ever shown them how spectacular the experience can be. The mass market will ALWAYS choose convenience (VHS over Betamax, streaming over hard media, fast food over gourmet, sex over TRUE intimacy) until or unless someone who knows what s/he’s really doing shows them the difference. Look, we’re talking about toys. The whole point is to have fun. As long as you’re having fun, you’re on the right track.

I have a good friend of mine who had a big collection of movies in a few different formats. Funny thing is he's NOT the auteur type who enjoys getting into more obscure films and actually would more often play well known movies just for background noise. So he had all these movies at his fingertips but only paid attention to a small fraction of them. I often thought what a waste of $$ and what a pointless hobby.
Then ... they all got burned up in one of the West Coast fires, and I realized a lot of people just start collecting for fun and over a long period you can amass a lot of stuff, and you don't want to see it all go "poof" just because it's under utilized. I really feel bad his lifetime of collecting was wiped out. Same thing with music CDs.

I have maybe about 15 DVDs; my husband has a lot more than me. I will only buy movies or a season of a tv series I really like. It’s nice to have them because I can watch them whenever I want to.
