The moment you realized you're old.

I just spent the last few minutes checking out some sports stats online of some retired players. It took me a few seconds to find it. Then it hit me. How would I have found this information without the internet? Then it hit me again... there was a world before the internet?!?!

What are your realizations that you're old as dirt?

reply

I was watching a game and Kluivert came out onto the pitch. It was Justin Kluivert, the son of Patrick Kluivert, and he looked almost exactly like his father did when I first saw him on TV around 1998.
I'm not even that old (I'm 30), but that moment hit me.

I get that with athletes all the time. I'm from Toronto and I remember in high school when Vince Carter started playing. Now the guy is retired and I can't believe he's had an entire career.

About 5 years ago I got home from work about 5:30, ran a nice bath then got out out and put my jamas on about 6pm. I felt really cozy and content. Then it hit me .... 10 years earlier I'd have jumped out of the bath, got dressed up and been out clubbing until 4 am! I was like, 'when did this shit happen?!' šŸ˜….

It's my favourite thing to do now though so I don't care at all. šŸ¤—

reply

Could be that you just lost interest. When I was younger I liked going places, but now I just like being alone and watching a movie.

reply

I started drinking coffee regularly when I worked night shift. After that I realized I was starting to turn into my Dad.

reply

When I stand up and my back hurts. Usually accompanied with a groan as well.

reply

I started doing that in my teens.

reply

You know you're old when everything hurts -- and what doesn't hurt, doesn't work! šŸ˜²

If I woke up in the morning and nothing hurt -- I'd think I was DEAD! šŸ˜©

reply

Probably when I started taking the gym classes that I used to think, "Why would anyone waste their time on such slow pointless classes".

reply

Sounds like Bingo night is next for you.

reply

Now that is hitting low. Bingo night indeed. At that point, just start shopping for a coffin.

Many funny, truthful examples!

I've gone through various stages of "old" in my life.
The first one was way back when I WAS young. I used to read teen magazines. The covers always had the current heartthrobs and singers on them. When I saw the covers and realized that I didn't recognize ANY of the singers anymore, I felt old.

A little over a decade ago I felt officially old when Barack Obama was elected President. It was the first time in my life when the President was younger than I was!

reply

I never thought about that. Iā€™m not sure who was the first president older than me. It did hit me when every major athlete was younger than me. There were a few old MLB and NFL players that I would follow, mainly because they were the only ones older than me. That was a long time ago.

I think I am the last generation to use a typewriter, rotary phone, record player, or shorthand. Remember the new school year with your new lunch box, theme book, and folders? I am a 70''s child. Do kids still pass notes in class or have writing punishments, like " I will not talk back to the teacher"? I can still remember how my hand use to hurt.

reply

I used all of those. If you're old, then I'm old.

NTM, Saturday morning cartoons, after school specials, anti drug commercials, toys in cereal boxes, mail order catalogs from Sears and Wards. Mail order is still popular, but most people buy on-line now. Not to mention , VHS tapes, in addition after school music videos. I often joke about the the time fast food did not cost an arm and leg, neither did going to the movies. Back in the 90's, tabloids were only $1. My family was addicted to them.

reply

Saturday Morning Cartoons are pretty much non existent now and I don't know why. And the kids today will never know the struggle of looking for a marker so you can wind the tape back in your VHS tapes because the tape came out.

reply

How about mini series and made for TV movies based on actual events. Those were fun sometimes. In addition , I had a Bozo and Bid Bird transistor radio and a Mickey Mouse tape recorder. I loved Super scope fairy tales on cassette. In addition to Tinker belle perfumes. Remember when kids played outdoors. A few years ago, I saw some kids playing hopscotch, and was shocked to the core. A rarity. I work in a library, and a little girl asked me two years ago, "What's an encyclopedia"? My nephew told me I should have told her to Google it. Remember meeting people in the malls and libraries versus online. Hell remembering standing up to bullies versus mass shootings. If I was tormented like that, mom would have transferred me, or threaten to sue the school. I remember getting hugs from my teachers and sitting on their lap during story time. They were female teachers , either way that would not happen today.

reply

That is why people say time back then we're simpler. And we were honestly smarter back then. We all knew what a phonograph was when we were younger, but kids now don't even know what an audio cassette is. The new generation has become so dumb that I'm worried about future movies becoming shorter because kids no longer have the attention span for something longer than an hour.

reply

You are right, back in the late 90's in the workplace, if a guy got out of line the first time, I would politely but sternly stand my ground , it worked. It's crazy how sloppy both genders dress for school and work in today's world. I have seen people wear T shirts and shorts to weddings. I always wanted to look nice, even if I was going to the laundromat or grocery store. I only wear ratty clothes around the house. In addition, good grooming and manners still matter to me.

reply

I had a Mickey Mouse record player, and I used to love the books you would get with a 45 in a sleeve.

reply

Popcorncal- Oh boy, fast food prices! I am old enough to remember a McDonald's commercial where the guy got a hamburger, Coke and fries and change back from his dollar!

Going to the movies? It's not just the movie prices, it's the concession stand! I remember that a friend and I would go to the Saturday matinee and stop at the store to buy boxes of candy. We could not see paying a dollar for a box of candy. Now candy is five dollars.

I've only been to the theater to see movies three times in the last fifteen years. I never buy food! lol

reply

I live in Chicago, at some high end bakeries, a slice of pie or cake is $5 or more. Furthermore, I got a free sundae for my birthday at this ice cream place, the regular price is $10! Although it was a very large sundae. To be fair, if you bought 2, the second is free. I cringed when I paid $5 for a milk shake. I made a pledge to treat myself now and then.

I have seen the price of concessions now, it's crazy. There are a few mom and pop eateries where the food is still affordable, but you really have to ask and do your research.

At most eateries, I usually have a salad. At some theatres, they have special days where they show older movies at cheaper prices.

reply

Popcorngal- A slice of pie or cake, $5.00? I remember when that was the cost of a whole cake at a bakery!

Movie concession stands are ridiculous. I hadn't been to the movies for quite a while but I went in 2006 with my niece to see "Madea's Family Reunion". She wanted some movie snacks. I remember thinking that I should have brought a credit card!

The few times that I've been to the movies in the last ten years, I always eat before I go. I'm not paying for a five dollar box of Milk Duds! lol

reply

I know, and it was not that long ago. You can still get $5 cakes at chain grocery stores, albeit they are small. People still sneak snacks in the theatres.

reply

When I needed my first pair of reading glasses. Never felt like I was out of my 20ā€™s at any point in my life until then.

reply

To be fair , young people have glasses too.

reply

I started wearing reading glasses at 11, it runs in the family. I started getting near sighted in my late 20's.

reply

I knew a lot of kids who wore glasses in elementary school. It's pretty common.

reply

Funny, I have a different take on reading glasses.

I never felt old for wearing glasses. I got my first pair when I was eleven. I have astigmatism. My mom does too and she got her first glasses when she was six.

I switched to contacts when I was sixteen. Over the years my prescription got stronger as my eyes got weaker. I was finally at the point where my contacts were so strong that they messed up my reading vision. I had to get "readers".

I got those cheap reading glasses at the Dollar Store. I had them in several strengths. I kept some upstairs, downstairs, in my purse for work, etc.

It got to the point where I had a lot of them in my night stand in the bedroom. The "feeling old" part? Remember Fred Sanford on "Sanford and Son"? One of his funniest routines was when he'd take out all his reading glasses from the drawer in the living room. He would be looking for the right pair to read something.

I used to think that was hilarious when I was a kid. Then one day I realized that I was doing the same thing! That's one of the reasons why I switched back to glasses. If I want to read something, I just take off my glasses.
