What does it feel like to know how to drive?

I'm someone who is interested in getting my driver's license for the first time in my life, and want to learn how to drive and overcome a fear I have of driving.

I'm always afraid of crashing while trying to find a place using directions, crashing while merging on, exiting, or driving on a highway, and overall dying in a car accident somehow.

I don't know what it's like to not fear those things, and to be able to get myself around well using a car. What is it like? How did you become that way? How long have you been able to drive fearlessly?

How do you feel when you drive? Do you ever fear the things mentioned?

I DIDNT GET MY LICENSE TILL I WAS A 26 YEAR OLD FATHER...ALL THE WORRY AND DOUBT IS JUST THAT...ITS FREAKY AT FIRST BUT ONCE YOU GET IT...YOU REALLY GET IT...SOON YOU FIND YOURSELF DRIVING AROUND AND NOT EVEN THINKING ABOUT IT...SECOND NATURE SO TO SPEAK...I QUITE ENJOY DRIVING THESE DAYS...ESPECIALLY FAST.šŸ˜ˆ

I am a bad driver but if you are not driving fast it shouldnt be a problem, you have enough time to slow down, brake or change direction. My dad gave me a good advice, when your foot is not on the gas keep it above the brakes.

Just get a Tesla with Autopilot. Don't worry too much about things. Driving is overrated anyway. Racing(on a track) is fun, daily driving is mundane.

cars are terrible investments

reply

Most cars are not investments. The vast majority depreciate and they are simply a necessary expenditure for most people. Some are a lot more fun than others, but while you might have a great car that runs well, 10 years from now it will probably be worth no more than 20% of what you paid for it.

ok, so buy a cheap used one 5000- 6000 tops, don't fall in love with a 20000 car loan

reply

I guess it depends on where you are in life and what your priorities are. If a $20k, (or $40k for that matter), car loan fits into your budget, then it shouldn't be a problem, but some people want a shinny new car when they can't afford it and shouldn't take on the extra debt.

reply

yep, car loans kill dreams

reply

They're not investments at all, unless you're buying an antique to keep in a showroom and sell again in the future. Otherwise it's a tool like a hammer or a computer and it's meant to serve you and make your life easier.

whatever helps you sleep at night

Once you have automatized it, it feels terribly easy. Like riding a bike. Indeed, that's the biggest problem: after a while people use to become overconfident, which is not a good thing.

There are places you can go to become a better driver. Or you could ride along with someone.

I love driving high performance cars and enjoy going on regular track days, however, Iā€™m always mindful with everyday driving. Being aware of your surroundings and anticipating situations is very important and you will develop this as you gain experience.

Driving on the open road is a wonderful experience, but concentration is the key.

Good luck!
