youtube family video series

How many are familiar with these video series on youtube where these families record all their antics for the rest of us to consume? I'm sort of forced to watch them with a client who has a disability and chooses them as entertainment, but I'm stunned these people seem to feel following all their vacations and silly stunts are worthy of sharing.
But then, I often feel like the lone opera listener in a sea of bro-country fans.
Any thoughts about this phenomenon?

I've never encountered these but it doesn't surprise me they exist

An alarming number of people seem to think that they're super interesting or important somehow...It sort of seems like a cry for attention

Very few people are terribly important in the grand scheme of things outside of their own families...More people should realize this

reply

I later realized I underestimate the reach of youtube.
These family series are a home-spun variation on reality TV just like America's funniest home videos. They are going for eyeballs and "likes" and there must be some financial angle at some point.
But it's so odd to see these same families, especially the father, doggedly determined to record and share just how much fun their family is. Even when it's wholesome and well-meaning, it's a family vacation reel gone amok.

reply

They're going for "clicks." Sometimes advertisers will pay users for allowing their commercials to run during these videos. That's why an ad will often pop up halfway through the video.

'LOOK AT ME! I'm a great dad! Watch my son shag out a flyball Wheee!
Isn't my wife pretty in her sundress?!? Watch my daughter twirl her baton, I'm a GREAT DAD!
Wheee!!

A few of those were somewhat controversial. There was one channel that was struck down due to the father exploiting his children for views, bordering on child abuse/neglect. He would cruelly prank them or film them while in obvious distress. Even dressing them up as babies with pacifiers, despite the fact they were 7 or 8 years old. Really creepy.

reply

The only thing I can think of what you’re referring to is DaddyOFive, although I’m not at all familiar with the dressing them like babies part.

reply

I believe it was called ToyFreaks.

reply

Well, at least he's upfront about being a freak...

reply

Doesn't surprise me, unfortunately. The world is a much different place than what I imagine it to be.

Drew Gooden has a good video about these weird as fuck channels: https://youtu.be/sz3aopl4OhI

However, the infamous one is DaddyOFive, genuinely one of the most disgusting channels I’ve ever seen on YouTube. Highly recommend Nerd City’s documentary (?) on these horrible parents: https://youtu.be/QOVrrL5KtsM

lot less weird then some of the other stuff people watch

reply

well better to at least make money rather than posting on facebook,

stopped using facebook for only a week and I feel so much happier, get so caught up in peoples facebook garbage and i'm easily influenced by certain peeps who don't give me the time of day normally.

i'm an underacheiver and facebook makes me unhappy

reply

It’s another good reason not to get too caught up in social media.

Funny how I ran across someone who is familiar with one of the same series that I am, and she blurted out, "I love that guy."
So what am I supposed to think? To me, he's an overgrown child who figures he's the life of the party. I must be the wet blanket, I guess.
Plus these people seem to have bottomless pockets to take their broods to Mexico, Niagara, Vancouver, Legoland, and buy all kinds of expensive toys all the time.

reply

If people wish to endorse this crap, then it’s on them.

reply

It's the self-centered "look at me"/"everything is about me... me... me..." mindset.

reply

You just KNOW that anyone who makes those videos abuses their kids when the camera is off.

"How are we going to get a million followers if you REFUSE to perform better for the camera, you worthless ugly little shit? You're just doing it to make me angry, well it's the leather belt and a night in the basement for you!".

reply

I did see one where the oldest girl seemed to be off by herself and the dad said, "she's being a teenager." I did wonder what happens when one person decides they don't want to participate anymore and how the family might handle this sudden disappearance.
