Can you name a person who was once in a band, but is better as a solo artist?

Other than Michael Jackson, I can't think of anyone whose solo career was more well received than when they were in a band/group.

Black Sabbath > Ozzy Osbourne

Cream > Eric Clapton

The Police > Sting

Creedence Clearwater Revival > John Fogerty

Genesis > Phil Collins

The Beatles > John Lennon/Paul McCartney/George Harrison/Ringo

Faces > Rod Stewart

Led Zeppelin > Robert Plant

The Velvet Underground > Lou Reed

The Stooges > Iggy Pop

Michael Jackson >>>> Jackson 5

Totally. And if you watch footage of his Victory tour with his brothers in 1985, and compare it to his Bad tour in 1987/88 by himself, you realise that they were actually holding him back. He wasn't as focused, as dedicated, as in the zone. He really was much better as a solo artist.

I’m guessing this is the number one answer here.

10,000 Maniacs then Natalie Merchant. But I kind of like 10,000 Maniacs better.

The Beatles had a lot of solo success, but they were at their best together as a unit!

Steve Vai > Zappa (not a singer, but a solo artist)

Cher

Cher was in a band?

reply

She was in a duo Sonny & Cher.

I don’t know if that counts as a band?

reply

Maybe that's what she was thinking of.

reply

Yeah, probably.

reply

It is a stretch..

reply

I don't know much about her music anyway

David Bowie > Tin Machine

Btw, it was LauraGrace75 who said Cher (one post above me).

reply

My phone kept doing a weird scrolling thing.

I never even heard of Tin Machine.

reply

Yes, I know exactly what you mean regarding the phone.

The industry joke went that in 1988 David Bowie split up to form Tin Machine (which were ahead of their time with elements of both Grunge and Nu-Metal) and then in 1992 David Bowie decided to reform himself.

If you fancy a bit of 'heavy metal' Bowie check out Tin Machine's albums: -
Tin Machine
Tin Machine II
Oy Vey Baby (Live)

His voice doesn't suit the band's sound.

reply

That's probably why the only people that bought the albums were me and possibly his mum.

Beyonce > Destiny’s Child

reply

I strongly disagree.

reply

I don’t really care one way or the other so I don’t have an opinion.

I just assumed that Beyoncé’s solo career had been well received by the public as she is very successful solo artist, and I had an impression that by now she probably has more hits than Destiny’s Child only because of the time passed that she has been solo and keeps releasing new music so I guess she surpassed them.

She definitely is the most successful of the group. Kelly Rowland did ok but not on Beyoncé’s level. And the third chick, I don’t even know her name, nobody cares about her, so I would guess her solo career isn’t doing so good. 😅

I just looked it up, and found this info about Beyoncé:

“Beyoncé has sold over 118 million solo albums, and 60 million with Destiny's Child, making her one of the highest-selling artists of all time.”
https://www.iheart.com/content/2018-02-12-15-times-beyonce-has-broken-records-and-made-history/

So I guess she did pretty good on her own, not my opinion, that’s what the record sales say.

I liked some od Destiny’s songs and some of Beyoncé’s, but was never a fan of either. So I’m unbiased. 😂

reply

I think people like Beyonce because Beyonce wants us to believe she was better than Destiny's Child.

reply

Could be. :)
