the supermarket is crazy

I just got back and people are going are going nuts. (March 13/2020)

I just placed an on-line order today, but the earliest time I could schedule a pick-up is Monday at noon. I missed a few items so I will have to place another order but this is new ground for me as I don't shop for groceries this way for just my husband and myself. My Kroger is 5 minutes from my house and I have always just gone up and picked up the few things I needed for the day - usually w/o a list. The only thing I wanted that wasn't available was Clorox wipes. I still have some, but if I'm out and they still don't have any I know how to make my own with bleach.

reply

I wore a mask today. Many others were also wearing one so I didn't feel like an idiot. There was toilet paper. Things seem to have calmed down from three weeks ago.

reply

Starting Monday grocery stores are going to limit the number of people inside so of course everyone is rushing out before then to stock up - the parking lots are packed. Kind of counter productive isn't it?

reply

there was a lineup when i got there but it moved pretty fast. i had about a 10 minute wait.

reply

I haven't heard about this. Is that only the state where you live or have you heard about this being the case in other towns/cities/counties/states/countries?

No TP here when I went Thursday. Luckily I didn't need any, just happened to notice as I went past the aisle. That was in the early evening. I was surprised, and not happy, to see it so busy.

reply

I live in Ohio. Guess it's starting today because my son was going to go to Home Depot today and he said, no way, the line to get into the store was too long.

I need to pop into Kroger in the morning, so guess I better get there before 7 am because every old geezer, will be there. If the line is too long, I won't wait.

Something needed to be done, because lately the parking lots have been packed in front of every grocery store and Home Depot/Lowes. Some people just aren't even trying.

I felt like such a dope last Wednesday. My local Target has an hour when they open (twice a week) for older and vulnerable people. I thought they were opening an hour EARLY, so I screwed up there. Then I assumed I was old enough to qualify but I still have a few years to go, so I felt stupid for trying to take advantage of the situation. All I wanted was to get some TP. I always have a lot in the house but that was assuming I could always get more. So I got the TP and now I know I'm going to have to compete with everyone else for what is available. You would think people will have taken all they need by now and things will calm down, but somehow I don't think it works that way.

When I went to Kroger last week, there was a limited supply of TP, but now that the governor has extended the stay inside until the end of April, I suppose it going to start all over again. I've been ordering all of my groceries online and had a hard time getting kitty litter this past week.

reply

Quite a change since last time in my area.

Fewer people there and everyone exudes a palpable fear.

The aisles have alternating "one-way" signs, and the shelves still empty of those certain items.

And custom shields cover the cashiers.

reply

I like the shields - protects them and me.

reply

I had to scan my supermarket card myself too. I thought they'd wand scan it at a short distance, but for some reason, they think me reaching in and doing it myself is safer.

reply

You went last night?

I wouldn't like the palpable fear, but I wish we had the alternating one way signs here.

Everything else is the same here as where you are. Oh. No more reusable bags allowed. Disposable paper or plastic only.

reply

That's bad for the environment.

reply

I went today. The only plus was getting in and out quickly due to the lack of volume in the store this time. It seemed like it dropped by two thirds since last time.

I tried to joke around with people to lighten things up here and there but no one was biting on that. Everyone was treating everyone else as though they are surely infected.

My last trip was Thursday evening. I wasn't sure what to expect since I haven't been out in over a week. Not very busy, shields at the checkouts, but you still have to touch the screen and credit card machine. TP aisle still empty - just a few packages of paper towels. Milk and eggs were okay, some butter available, but the cheese cases were nearly empty. Meat supply was decent, as was the bread aisle. I didn't look at the pasta aisle this trip.

Surprisingly, the ice cream topping section was nearly empty. There was a guy restocking some ice cream, but I didn't go down that aisle so I don't really know what the freezer cases looked like. I don't eat pizza so I have no idea how the frozen pizza freezers looked like. Overall, it seemed like hit or miss on everything, except of course, the TP which is consistently "miss."

Oh, and people seemed to be giving everyone space. I did not sense fear, nor overly friendly. More like practical and cautious.

I hope we are not seeing the end times

I’m stocked up on essentials and have been and am trying to avoid going to the grocery store. For things like milk, cheese and other odds and ends there is a delivery service that cost around 20 dollars extra to have it dropped at your front door. Anything else can come from eBay or Amazon.

Is anyone else going this route? I just feel better knowing I’m not entering any public places.

reply

People are still hoarding certain items. Went to Target this morning and they had a sign by the entrance saying which items where out of stock: TP, paper towels, hand sanitizer, Sanitizing wipes, dishwasher detergent, etc...
Bandanas are also sold out now. Everyone wants a face covering and there are no masks to be found.

reply

They are rationing vegetables, as well as paper goods and disinfectants now. ☹️

reply

We will see - I'm going out this morning and it will be my last run for a couple of weeks. Most of what I get is on-line, but it always seems that a few things aren't available but last week I popped in and they were there in the store. Last week - plenty of veggies and even some TP and paper towels, but they were the jumbo pack - more than I would use in 6 months. There are alternatives to TP and paper towels, so I'm good for now.

In Ohio they have started limiting the # of people in a store, so if there is a line, then I won't get in it.

reply

The trip was successful - no line and I was able to get everything I wanted - even some TP and paper towels. The meat and produce sections were full but the kitty litter section was still almost wiped out. There were probably about 50 people in the store and the aisles were not crowded.

reply

That’s good! It was like that 2 weeks ago (except for TP, paper towels) in California but things changed since then. I am surprised they are selling jumbo packs. They should open those up and sell less to more people.

reply

I know - it was the size sold at Cosco. Today they had the 6 pack which is exactly what I needed.
