Movies You Like w/ No Likable Characters?

It's hard to think of many, but if I had to pick one, it would be "The Incident" (1967). It's a great movie, too, a favorite of mine. It's a straight-forward thriller (Martin Sheen's first role, and possibly Beau Bridges), but it's also allegorical.

Body Heat is a favorite of mine and both of the main characters are despicable. Even the victim, Matty's husband is not a nice guy.

reply

A Clockwork Orange

reply

Good example.

Casino

reply

I liked Frank Vincent's character "Frankie".

reply

I always loved The Libertine with Johnny Depp.

reply

the incident is a terrific movie. but as i recall, most of the victims are pretty sympathetic.

donna mills had a smaller role in it. the teenaged damosuzuki fancied her quite a bit.

reply

But they also had a darker side outside of the train. None that I can remember that were likable.

reply

it's been a good number of years since i watched it, and i have a very wobbly memory when it comes to things like this, so i'd put money on you being right.

it looks like there's a stream of no doubt dubious legality posted on youtube. i think i'll give it a re-watch today.

reply

Cool.. I was about to mention something, but I'll wait.

reply

Goodfellas has some charismatic characters that are interesting to watch, but I don't think any of the main characters are decent people.

I don't think you have to really root for characters in a movie to enjoy that movie, though. Goodfellas is brilliant.

reply

You're so right. The "Carbone" character wasn't too bad. That poor guy ended up on a meat hook though.

reply

Carbone was a likable doofus, too bad about the meathook but Jimmy wasn't splitting the heist loot with just anybody

reply

Cape Fear - 1991

reply

in the scorcese remake, absolutely.

the family in the 60s version was very innocent & sympathetic as i recall.

reply

true.

The Mecahnic (1972)

A apprentice/master story about two completely stoic and unremoresful assassin's.

reply

It really is hard to like either of the two main characters.
