Foy-er or Foy-ay

I say Foy - ay as the word is french and that is how it is pronounced. I know a lot of Americans say Foy - er, but my partner is from South Africa and he says Foy-er as well.

FWA-yay.

reply

That is closer to how I say it too come to think about it.

reply

I'm pretty sure it's the French way. It sounds French, at least.😬

reply

If your talking about the fireplace then yeah; in French we write it foyer and it’s pronounced fwayay

reply

You have to forgive us, but the rest of the world only uses it to refer to the lobby. But the idea of lighting a cozy fire in the foyer sounds just lovely!😁

reply

Foy-ay.

reply

Entrance hall

reply

ay

reply

Foy-ay. I don't know any Canadian who says it the other way.

reply

My partner is Canadian, but he does talk funny. Lol.

To be fair though I have heard foy-er more and more in Alberta. Probably because the bertabllies want to separate themselves from the rest of Canada any way they can. Or maybe they just watch too much HGTV from the states.

reply

It took me a second to figure out what you meant by "bertabillies".

reply

I think you should ask your butler.. What a strange, difficult word by definition. There are poor people who wouldn't even know what that word means.

reply

I'll also say, meet me in the Parlor and we'll have some tea and discuss it.

reply

I wouldn't say either way; I don't have one.

reply

I don’t think I’ve ever heard it pronounced any way other than ‘foy-ay’!
