Are you ever surprised by celebrities people have never heard of?

My best friend didn’t know who Michael Caine, Gene Hackman, Martin Scorsese, Charles Bronson, Michael Mann, David Mamet, Aaron Sorkin were.

I think different people are into different eras. I know your list but my wife was laughing because I could not pick out a bunch of current rappers, singers, movie stars and reality stars from their pictures.

True, good point...reality stars would have to enter the mainstream for me to recognize

I agree. We all have our own tastes, so we don't see every movie or TV show that comes down the pike. Some folks never do pay attention to directors and what movies they did. I'd never be able to pick out rappers or reality stars either - they're just not my thing.

Is your best friend younger by any chance? I have found that younger people don't know much of anything that came before them and all the people you listed started off a while ago.

I'm sometimes surprised when people don't know a song or band etc.

That said I am blissfully unaware of most films, music and actors of the past 10 or so years.

Yeah, a younger colleague of mine had never heard of Paul Hogan OR Crocodile Dundee. Mate!!
