The Maltese Falcon, 1941

A lot people think Bogart's not exactly a Cary Grant type of handsome, but I like that,
a rough-around-the-edgiesness. But, damn Mary Aster looks like someone's Grandmother. The opposite of hot.

reply

I think you might not have picked up the gossip mongering subtext of this post. Leading men who were "prettier" than the leading lady *nudge nudge wink wink*.

reply

oooooohh, but i did mention cary grant!

i'm stoopid

reply

Cary Grant and Randolph Scott. The original gay batchelors. About the only one of the four I mentioned I think is straight is Kate Winslet.

reply

you are really funny. I like you Q, and i'm glad you're here.

reply

Thank you verrah much. The feeling is mutual.

reply

neither did I

reply

we old

reply

I'm no spring chicken either. I can remember the old days of not having a refrigerator, just an ice-box cooler and a meat-safe.

reply

i can remember getting our first color TV.

reply

Yep, and the black and white TV and the telephone before that. But this is Australia I'm talking about and we were poor Catholics with too many kids so we were later than most with getting these things.

reply

I remember being in primary school in the early 80's and hearing kids talk about the films they watched last night at home. There were only a few stations in Australia back then and I knew what they sai they watched wasn't on TV.

Took us till 1985 to get a VCR and by then VCR's weren't braggable anymore lol.

reply

The old days of going to the Video Store. There aren't many of them left now.

reply

Any Alain Delon movie from the '60s.

reply

Robert Redford over Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were (1973)

reply

Good call, that ones a no-brainer !

reply

BS is a dawg. I freely admit that. Damn, her initials are the same as Bu** Sh**. Isn't that special.

reply

And Ryan O'Neal over Barbra Streisand in The Main Event, What's Up Doc and As Time goes By.

reply

Ryan Gosling was very good looking compared to Carey Mulligan in Drive...
Mulligan is cute but a bit plain imo

reply

gosling versus emma stone! i just don't get it. but i do like mulligan, she can be waifish and some people find that very appealing.

reply

I find Emma to be cuter than Carey:)

Listen to me comparing beautiful women, I'm no looker I can tell 'ya 😬

reply

Dude I couldn’t agree more. Guys seem to really dig that stone broad but to me, she looks like a bug.

reply

(i don't usually like to do this to women, but damn, i'm prettier than she is!)

reply

Lol right?! I dig you lauragrace, you’re like my interweb doppelgänger😁

reply

i know right? you even say 'dude' like me - nobody does that anymore!
Shit, we should go bowling sometime.

reply

Absolutely! I’ll bring the contraband 😉

reply

Poor Carey looks awful now that she has dropped a lot of weight. And becoming a mother to two young children probably hasn't helped either. But when she was young I thought she was very pretty in a quiet, passive sort of way. And she has a beautiful singing voice which always helps in my book.

reply

I must admit I haven't seen her in anything recently
A good singing voice is a plus though, agreed

reply

yeah, her New York, New York rendition in Shame? twas very good.

reply

Carey singing an old song. Her voice really stands out here:

Let No Man Steal Your Thyme

reply

lovely, i had no idea

reply

Saw her a while back on the Graham Norton show. She looked good to me, more a girl next door type than a glamour girl. But then I tend to prefer that.

No idea what she looks like now though. Women seem to be aging worse than they used to.

reply

I found her to be very attractive and complimentary to him actually.

reply

I love Ryan Gosling but he's not that pretty or handsome..at least not in any traditional way.
He's appealing.

reply

he wasn't the leading man, but i'd say greg sestero is prettier than the female lead in the room.

reply

Oh leave your stupid comments in your pocket.

And you are correct.

reply

Speed

reply

The original "Point Break", with Keanu and Lori Petty.

I mean she was cute, still is, but he was Keanu jn his prime.

reply

That's the example I was thinking of. I even did a post on it once.

reply

Dirty Dancing

Circle of Friends

Sex and The City

Jane Eyre

reply

Which 'Jane Eyre' ?

reply

All of them. The character is described as “plain”

reply

Let's see about these Jane Eyre's:

1943 - Joan Fontaine / Orson Welles - check
1983 - Zelah Clarke / Timothy Dalton - check
1996 - Charlotte Gainsbourg / William Hurt - too close to call
1997 - Samantha Morton / Ciaran Hinds - Samantha was much prettier
2006 - Ruth Wilson / Toby Stephens - reluctant check but not much in it
2011 - Mia Wasikowska / Michael Fassbender - Mia was prettier

Looks like a mixed bag to me.

reply

George C. Scott and Susannah York - York is prettier.

reply

Hah ! That would be one of the very few Jane Eyre's I haven't seen.

reply

it's good.

reply

It would be a rare film I imagine to try and get hold of these days.

reply

reply

Thanks for that ! I see it's still available on DVD as well. I might have to add to my collection.

reply

did you study English Lit?

reply

No I didn't get much of an education and never even finished high school. But I have haphazardly picked up information here and there as I've gone along that has partially made up for that.

reply

Maybe some of those actresses are stunners in other roles but they looked plain as Jane Eyre. Granny buns, pasty white faces, ugly dresses. Toby Stephans and Michael Fassbender were both hot looking Rochesters.
