How do you find out about new movies and shows?

Just noticed a movie from 2008 on Trending, which I've never heard of despite it being pretty mainstream.

Which reminded me that I used to know all or most of the new movie releases because I checked the movie listings in the paper every week, and would scan the reviews. Can't remember the last time I looked at a newspaper.

Sometimes I'd see commercials for them on TV, but I don't even have a TV anymore.

Word of mouth from friends and MC are now the only ways I hear about new releases these days.

You?

reply

Usually on IMDb, YouTube or word of mouth

reply

IMDB and this site.Mostly Youtube though.Especially the Joblo movie trailers and Joblo tv show trailers pages on Youtube. They keep me up to date on anything new.

reply

I almost never seek out new releases unless it’s a director I’m a fan of or a recommendation. This site has been wonderful for recommendations on older films as I’ll read a posting that sounds interesting and go search that movie out.

Mostly here or from NPR. Lots of things are popular and I have No Idea !?!

reply

Previews on Tv.

reply

I use Metacritic, they cover a lot and are quite accurate.

why are you looking for new movies and shows?
have you seen all the old ones?

"new" to me just means a movie of any age I havent seen.
I recently discovered:
Big Nothing (2006)
Chef (2014)
The Gene Generation (2007)

Any new ones that come out are going to involve magical people flying around with their underwear on the outside of their lycra.

you are not a superhero movie fan ??

reply

no , 'tis a cancer on 21st century cinema , its deadly limbs twisted around the throat , slowly squeezing the life and creativity out the art

reply

I am not a fan either

reply

Homer Simpson voice: Gene Generation . . . Bai Ling (drool) . . . Nude (slobber-drool) . . . Yum

That's like asking someone why they read the NY Review of Books or NYT book reviews, have they read all the old books? 😄

It's easier to find reviews of new releases you're interested in seeing than it is old ones, unless you already know the titles. I knew about The Shape of Water and The Green Book, for instance, when they were released because of MC. Haven't yet seen The Green Book, but I will.

" unless you already know the titles"
is it? how do i know which new films I'm interested in seeing , given that most of them are superhero shite , odds are i dont want to see them. Actually i suppose thats my first filter Superhero films are easy to spot and avoid.
so once they are ruled out , and im left with whatever new stuff remains...
How do i know which new ones are are good , or interesting to me?
I too know of the 2 you named through this site, but also i've found some old ones i havent seen due to people posting comments about them , and they appear on the front page.
The only advantage with new ones is , you know you havent seen them and there are only so many at any given time ...which means easy to research , but very limited choice compared to old ones.

I just look through the entirety of whats available to me , for stuff that seems ok that i havent seen.
This is why i dont like Netflix's interface, compared to amazon's - on amazon you can instantly see loads of viewer reviews , on NF you get a one sentence plot outline , and a noisy trailer that wont stfu

I hope some of that ramble made some sense ....

Yes, it is. Because in order to filter out what you're not interested in seeing, you have to go through thousands and thousands of titles with non-2019/2018 movies. New releases are limited, and as you say, it's easy enough to filter out superhero movies, or whatever other genre you're not interested in (for me that includes horror). Plus, yes, it's a guarantee you haven't already seen them.

I'm finding your responses odd. I never said or implied I'm only interested in new releases. The vast majority of what I watch isn't new. That's probably true for everyone. As I said in my OP, it suddenly struck me that while I used to keep up with what was out on a regular basis, now I don't, unless I notice something that looks interesting to me here, or friends tell me about something I think I'd like. So I wondered how others here know about new releases, and posted this asking.

I still read the newspapers
