What did you watch this week snowflake? (01/13-01/19)

Your are cool, you are unique, you are my snowflake.

My week:

SubUrbia (1996 DVD): This is not a masterpiece but to me it’s not just a movie either. It’s a feeling, an emotion. It’s a slice of my life, a memory, a familiar sound, familiar surroundings. It’s life’s problems and life’s solutions. It’s alternative-rock, it’s Ribisi, it’s me, it’S her, it’S him. It’s you. 10/10

A question of faith (2017 DVD): I like Christian movies, they make me feel good. My wife likes them even more and we both failed to enjoy this one. It lacks depth, realism and emotional impact. It felt soulless and superficial so we barely cared for what happened on screen. There were a few signs of light here and there so I’ll give it 4/10.

Puss in boots (2011 TV): Finally got around to watching this one and I knew I’d like it. It was fun, funny and makes a great family movie. 7.5/10

Workaholics Season 5: This show has always been “lots of hits and a few misses” for me but this season was more like “A few hits and a fair amount of misses”. Still, even when they miss, it’s never a total waste of time. Overall: 6.5-7/10

Not seen any of your ones.

Only Fools and Horses (1981) 10/10
"Comedy that follows two brothers from London's rough Peckham estate as they wheel and deal through a number of dodgy deals as they search for the big score that'll make them millionaires"
https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0081912/?ref=m_nv_sr_1

reply

Huh, never heard of it. What season you at?

reply

Finished them all. I'd seen them all before over the years but it had been a while.

reply

'Snowflake' lol!
Bro, you are too much😉

I did not see yours, sorry

I saw:

Drive (11) a rewatch, I love this movie so much
The head busting violence in the elevator required some communication between Nicholas Winding Refn and Gaspar Noe...evidentally it is difficult to make a head break apart on film convincingly and Noe filmed it very well in Irreversible...Refn could have called Tom Savini who created the amazing shotgun vs. face FX in Maniac (80) but what do I know..?
(10/10) excellent thriller on Netflix

The Fantasist (86)
A very hot Irish lady gets involved with crazy neighbors, a perverted phone caller and a local serial killer
There is also some sexy nudity...somehow it was all very stupid and boring!
(4/10) Amazon Prime

The Touch of Satan (71)
Awful...When I found this streaming I thought 'ooh, a 70s drive-in horror I've never heard of..?' I was compelled to watch it!
I am starting to realize why some movies are completely forgotten!
Sheesh:/
(1/10) Amazon Prime

The Conjuring (13)
Wilson and Farmiga are great in this not very scary movie
(6/10) Netflix

Escape at Dannemora (18)
Hells bells what a series!
Cast, music, script...this show was amazing
hownos mentioned it so it went on my watchlist
(10/10) all day Amigo! Showtime btw

Mindhunter (17)
Great series about the FBI and the really horrible murderers they chase after
I have a few episodes left but I'm loving it (it is a bit 'dark' though...some of the creeps the Feds investigate are really nasty bastards!)
(10/10 so far) Netflix

See you around Hombre👍

reply

Hey boss!

Drive: Not a fan but it has its moments. 6.5/10 ( strangely, I love Only God forgives)

I was not aware of Mindhunters. Might look it up someday although right now I have Travelers and Titans that caught my attention on Netflix.

reply

Drive is amazing to me but I get it, it's certainly not for everyone

I need to rewatch Only God Forgives
That was a strange one lol...loved how weird it all was
The Karaoke was a bonus!

Mindhunter is on point bro
Lots of actual killers get cameos (their real crimes are described, it's all pretty amazingly gross)
Heavy stuff but a damned perfect thriller show

Barabbas (1961) - Barabbas, the criminal that Pontius Pilate induced the populace to vote to set free, so that Christ could be crucified, is haunted by the image of Jesus for the rest of his life. Solid performance by Anthony Quinn in the lead role. A strange scene when Lazarus make a cameo performance. These movies are never historically accurate but I do love the times and the Roman sets. 7.5/10

Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954) - In 1st century Rome, Christian slave Demetrius is sent to fight in the gladiatorial arena and Emperor Caligula seeks Jesus' robe for its supposedly magical powers. This is better than I remember. One of Victor Mature's better performances. Jay Robinson steals the show as Caligula. Susan Hayward is pretty but not the vixen type as portrayed. Michael Rennie as Peter is also good. This is a sequel to the robe and worth the watch. 7/10

Spartacus (1960) (movie): The slave Spartacus leads a violent revolt against the decadent Roman Republic. A wonderful Roman Republic movie. Olivier and Ustinov steals the movie from Douglas I thought. In fact I thought Douglas was the weak link. This is still a masterpiece in my opinion. Just a epic movie to get lost in. 8.5/10

Quo Vadis (1951) - Fierce Roman commander Marcus Vinicius (Robert Taylor) becomes infatuated with beautiful Christian hostage Lygia (Deborah Kerr) and begins questioning the tyrannical leadership of the despot Emperor Nero (Sir Peter Ustinov). Another great performance by Ustinov was is magnificent as Nero. Robert Taylor wasn't much of an actor and seemed very wooden. This movie had 8 Oscar nominations and made a pile of money but it fell short in the story line. 7/10

Boy Erased (2018) - The son of a Baptist preacher is forced to participate in a church-supported gay conversion program after being forcibly outed to his parents. Not much happens in this film to be honest. The Miseducation of Cameron Post is better. Not a lot if drama in this movie. Russell Crowe and Kidman are under utilized. 5.5/10

One TV series:

Luther (2019) - They wrapped up season 4 nicely with the Alice and Cornelius characters. The problem with this season was that the serial killings they were investigating seemed to be in the way and was an afterthought. I still love the character and the atmosphere of the show. 7/10

reply

Barabbas: yeah, movies like that can be good sometimes. Never saw that one though.

Spartacus: on my watchlist

Luther: how would you describe the show in a sentence or two?

reply

The first three seasons of Luther are just great. There was a drop off with Seasons 4 and 5. The series is very gritty and there is some gore. The lead detective played by Idris Elba breaks all the rules for all the right reasons.

reply

Sounds awesome. THanks

Movies:

-Woman in the Moon (1929)
This movie by Fritz Lang definitely didn't need to last almost 3 hours. But it was funny to see the silly ideas people had back then about space travel and sci-fi.

TV Shows:

-Breaker High - marathon

-The Love Boat - marathon

-The Flying Doctors - marathon

-The New Detectives - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-The Sopranos - "Calling All Cars" and "Eloise"

reply

Woman in the Moon (1929): where do you find such a movie to watch!?!? Geez!!

reply

They showed it on French-German culture channel Arte.

reply

I finished bingeing The Last Kingdom and then started season 2 of The Punisher..

Finished out the season finale of Ray Donovan..

Watched a younger Woody Harrelson in The Sunchaser and Indecent Proposal ..

reply

My friend keeps telling my I need to get on board with The LAs Kingdom. Im not saying I wont...

reply

Hmm..well, I never was one for viking or medieval themes but ended up getting into GOT after being talked into it and then finally got talked into giving The Last Kingdom a shot. What can I say? I ended up liking it too.
It's funny though. I hate blood and guts and end up watching so much blood and gut brutality.
But a good story is a good story.

Wheel of Fortune

Highlights:

One contestant had the million dollar prize puzzle in her possession, proceeded to the final round, missing the last game which was "annoying buzzer", only to realize had she gotten it correct, she would have been a millionaire! Incredible! This is the second instance this incident occurred on the show in just 2 weeks. Ouch time.

Another episode saw some man named Joe, I think, answer the final puzzle, which was "fancy cupcakes", winning a coveted Mercedes vehicle! But first, he introduced us to his extended family, too long to list. Good thing you won that Mercedes, dude. You're gonna' need it.

Jeopardy!

Interesting facts:

- In tailoring, pointed folds to enhance the fabric of a garment are called these, like pointed missiles in a pub game.
What are darts?
If that was a weapon, we really would be reaping what we sow. (^_~)

- Brooke Shields asked, "You want to know what comes between me and my" Calvin Klein jeans? This:
What is nothing.
Like a game of bingo, everyone needs a free space. (^ ^)

- "You made me feel, yeah, you made me feel shiny and new... Hoo!" This way:
What is like a virgin.
looks like "Jeopardy!" is trying to be the new "Game of thrones!" (^o^)

John Presloid, big "Golden Girls" fan, dethrones Anneke Garcia's 4 day reign total of $104,497, squeaking by in a surprise third wheel victory to carve out a continuing path of his own, so far banking in a whopping haul of $37,200 in 2 days. Talk about going for the gold.

Lethal Weapon TV series:

See Sean William Scott, ex-CIA operative tough man, try to duke it out will the toughest challenge of his life, being truthful to his daughter whom he has been separated from for 12 years. Also, Damon Wayans, paranoid cop supreme, is right again as usual, suspecting foul play in a boxing foray. Can he still do the "Roger?" Scott's life is messed up, trying to get it together as a family man. Wayan's life is not, trying to be an independent loosie goosy with his.

reply

I watch Jeopardy almost daily. Quite often it has a category about movies or the final Jeopardy question is movie oriented.

reply

Correct!
One such recent final question I remember went something like, "She became the youngest actress to be nominated for 3 Oscars, winning one in the 21 century."

Who is Jennifer Lawrence.

Glad we're fans. ✋

reply

I also enjoy https://moviechat.org/tt3077336/The-Chase, a similar program. The Beast is an acknowledged genius and often amazing to see in action. And again, it features many movie oriented questions.

reply

That is a show I would definitely be into if I had the Game Show Network.
However, I have seen one of their original series, "Catch 21", hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro.
What an addicting concept.
Twin B and I plan on watching an upcoming FOX trivia show titled "Mental Samurai."
Contestants must endure rollercoaster ride antics for every question they get wrong or miss.
Hosted by Rob Lowe. We will let you know if it is any good.

Pretty awesome game show run down!
You should do a weekly thread

reply

Great idea, Shogie. I'll post my info on each show's individual boards too while I am at it.
Will try to add some other series on the agenda to spice things up.
Perhaps do a nightly roundup for Jeopardy! at least.
Poke fun at Alex Trebek too.

~~/o/

reply

I keep saying I'm going to do this - post my comments to the individual boards - but every week I forget! Nice reminder, twinA!

reply

It is harder than it looks when trying to recall everything from memory.
Like you, I will try to create a journal to make these entries much easier to do.
I appreciate the compliment, Glen.
Game shows are good to watch when on a time crunch.
No need to really invest in a story. Relax and have fun.

~~/o/

reply

Most of the time, that's why I don't post to Stonekeeper's weekly thread. I forget what I watched last week. I started a list on a Word doc on my laptop, but half the time I forget to put down what I watched. Sheesh. 🙄

reply

One thing that may help when trying to jog memory is by associating something with a picture.
Could be anything; sandcastle, rollercoaster ride, chocolate covered truffles.
Funny how the human mind works.

reply

Not a bad idea. My library's website lets us make lists, and I have a sort of watch list there, which helps some. I use my list to request things, but if the film never made it to the list, then once I return it, I'm out of luck. Unfortunately, there's no way to see my check-out history. Oh well, I just have to get in the habit of putting things on my "watched-this-week list."

reply

You can always create a watchlist on Letterboxd of the films you have seen and more:
https://letterboxd.com/

It is free to use, just need to make an account first.

Hmm, I may have to check that out. Thanks!

Thank Allaby. I found out about the site through him.
Always glad helping a friend.

Ahah, that was fun to read, thanks. Personally, when I have a day off I always watch Let'S make a deal.
