List some of your most hated blockbusters of all time.

We all know about bad films. I just was curious as to which blockbuster films people seriously hate. I will list some of mine.

Godzilla 1998: Even as a kid I thought this movie sucked. The advertising was so good at being deceptive. A boring ripoff of Jurassic Park. Roland Emmerich is just pure cringe.

Daredevil: One could say I was high off of Spider-man therefore everything with the Marvel logo got my attention. Well I got a dark cringe worthy film with a very bland lead. This movie is a reason I have never been big on Affleck as an actor. Is he the worst ever no he is just so bland to me. The netflix tv show really illustrates how terrible this is. It was bad back then and it is even worse now. Now I do not put all the blame on Affleck he has done some decent work before but boy he can be hard for me to take. I saw this movie by myself sigh big mistake.

Green Lantern: Man just ugh! How was this film so bad? It had a talented director but the script was a giant stack of generic tropes. The effects looked faker than the mummy returns effects in 2002. The fact that it feels like a tired ripoff of top gun makes me hate it. What I hate is Guardians of the Galaxy comes out after this and completely kills this movie. This director did Goldeneye, Mask of Zorro and Casino Royale let that sink in man!

Ghost Rider: Same director as Daredevil surprise surprise. Let me just do you all a favor and spare you the time and say go watch Blade it is a vastly better version of this film. Tried so hard to be badass and it was just awful. No funny scene landed and the action sucked! Hey people even if your hero is a badass we need to see struggle! He breezes through all the villains without any difficulty at all. Blade while badass actually struggled with the vampires although rare still struggled. When you make him that invincible it is like playing a videogame with the invincibility cheat on. It is fun for like two seconds then it is boring.

Fantastic Four 2015: I was going to put the other ones released in the mid 2000's but my hell this one was worse than those. Those other ones while awful are cheese cringe fests. This goes for a serious dark gritty tone. Well I usually prefer that tone but when it is done this badly my hell. This movie had a talented cast also what happened? The director before made Chronicle my goodness! I did not think it was possible to be worse than the other ones but by damn they did it.

Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice: Okay Man of Steel disappointed me. Plenty of films have.I could not have guessed that this film would have been such a travesty. I literally could not believe after the TDK trilogy we got Batman in this pile of crap. I think this film is worse than Batman & Robin yes you heard me correct! Batman & Robin while terrible was at least entertaining. It was so bad it was hilarious. BVS thinks it is so deep and is a movie I honestly can not sit through. I saw it twice and it was even more painful the second time.

Justice League: I hate this film just as bad as BVS. I hated the whole oh it is better than BVS argument. Well is that really a hard feet? Also did I miss something? It was better? In what way? Oh yeah it was shorter I will give you that. What else was better? The effects for a movie of this budget were just an atrocity. This felt like a movie made in the late 90's. No excuse for a film with this high of budget. War of the Planet of the Apes and Blade Runner 2049 had smaller budgets and put this turd to absolute shame in cgi and visual effects. Oh and bringing in old music themes will make you look past all the terrible acting, writing, green screen, effects as well as how cringe worthy the jokes were.

In addition to the ones you mentioned, I'd have to choose a couple that are less commonly reviled, and some other frequently cited as poor quality movies.

Independence Day
Die Hard 2
Suicide Squad
The Hobbit (the entire trilogy)
The Amazing Spiderman 2

reply

1. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
2. Suicide Squad
3. Jurassic Park sequels (including both Jurassic World movies)
4. The Amazing Spider-Man (both movies)
5. Transformers sequels
6. Pirates of the Caribbean sequels
7. Iron Man 3
8. Beauty and the Beast (live action)
9. The Jungle Book (live action)
10. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

reply

I have only one choice:
All Superhero films.

Besides the ones you mentioned:

Catwoman (2004)
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
Jonah Hex (2010)
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Van Helsing (2004)
The Happening (2008)

Those are some off the top of my head.

Gladiator. A chick flick disguised as a boy movie.

Titanic. A chick flick disguised as an important movie, though I admit the sinking of the ship was cool.

Sex And The City: The Movie. A gay flick disguised as a chick flick (just like the HBO series whence it was derived).

Avatar. Dances With Wolves disguised as science-fiction.

Caddyshack. Ushered in the era of frat-boy “humor.”

reply

gladiator is actually my fav, i agree with you regarding titanic

reply

Same here - loved Gladiator - almost fell asleep during Titanic.

reply

I get your point on the other films you listed even though I may not fully agree. However your reasons on Gladiator puzzle me. How is that a chick flick disguised as a boy movie?

reply

Let me define my terms. A boy movie is centered around sex and violence. A chick flick is centered around relationships and feelings. A person of either gender often enjoys films from both categories. I’ve only seen Gladiator once, won’t see it again, but I recall the reason why: the point of the film was to establish Crowe as a heart-throb by creating empathy with a female audience. Yes, Maximus is a manly General and wears armor and weilds weapons, and is a devoted family man. I was good with that. But then he runs afoul of Emperor Commodus, who has the man’s wife and son crucified and BURNED (which was literally overkill). It’s a gruesome image. Maximus vows revenge and then, for reasons I forget, winds up
as a slave gladiator and no one recognizes him. We keep seeing flashbacks of his murdered family. We know he’s devoted to his revenge for them. And then the day comes when Commodus himself enters the arena to congratulate the unknown gladiator on a great victory. Maximus is armed. He could cut the guy down in a thrice, but does not! Why not? Because Emps has a pre-teen boy relative with him. Oh Maxie baby! You’re so sensitive AND manly! Meanwhile his dead family are wondering what happed to the vendetta. Yes, Max and Emps do finally fight in the stadium, but not before Emps fatally wounds Max out of view of his subjects. Yes, Max kills the cowardly and reprehensible Emps, then dies and is reunited with his family. Max, like Jack in Titanic, gives women hope that there are good men in the world. What Max did not give me was convincing combat nor the sense that he understood that there are no rules in battle, except for kill or be killed. The action in the film was much too sanitary for me, the lingering shots of waves of grain and dirt blowing in the wind too feminine. It was too much as if Spartacus had been done by the Hallmark Greeting Card folks. I see far more in the way of relationships and feelings in Gladiator than I do in the way of sex and violence: a chick flick disguised as a boy movie.

reply

Ah okay. I do not necessarily agree but I appreciate the fact that you elaborated on why you thought that. I personally think that it was a well done film. Although I can see why people preferred prior films that did that same basic thing already prior to it. Movies such as Ben Hur, Spartacus etc. I loved Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus one of cinema's best villains in my book. The score by Hans Zimmer was also mesmerizing.

reply

I have to disagree on Gladiator, and I've never seen Sex and the City (nor do I want to), but I'm with you on the others, Avatar especially. I've seen it described as "Pocahontas on another planet" and I think that sums it up.

contact
gravity
the departed
arrival
some already mentioned by others

reply

I agree on Arrival and Gravity.

reply

Frozen
Disney's live action Beauty and the Beast movie
Avatar
Titanic
The Harry Potter movies
The Transformers movies
The Fast and the Furious movies
The Jurassic World movies
Pretty much any superhero movie in the last 10 years
Any Star Wars movie that is not part of the OT

reply

Interesting. If I may ask how about Logan? That for me was a rather refreshing take on a superhero after all these years. I don't know maybe that is me.

reply

I haven't seen that one. I'm kind of tired of the Wolverine character.

reply

Any superhero movie you enjoy? Still though elaborate on Gladiator being disguised as a girl movie. I don't see it.

reply

That was R_Kane, not me.

reply

I'm tired of Wolverine too, he's overused and everexposed and overhyped.... Never had an interest in any of his standalone movies.

But WOW I'm glad someone talked me into watching Logan. It's so good, and it's more of an action drama than a superhero flick.

reply

Hm, maybe I'll give it a try. But it won't be at the top of my list. I'm not a fan of today's action movies in general.

reply

It's a very atypical action movie. Imagine if just the faintest notion of "Wolverine" was turned into something kind of like No Country for Old Men, but with the kind of graphic violence you might expect from John Wick.

reply

Logan was very good and this comes from a guy who does not like superhero movies. I agree it is more of an action movie. Patrick Stewart was great.

reply

I'm with you on most of these. I don't necessarily agree on the Harry Potter movies. I like some better than others, but I didn't hate any of them. What bothers me about them, though, is that, because the series changed directors so much and each director had his own style, they don't feel very cohesive--that is, they don't feel like they're part of the same story.

reply

Yeah, just compare the first and the last movie. Doesn't even feel like the same universe.

The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)
Cleopatra (1963)
