"The Trial" (1962).

Watch "The House of Sand and Fog", unbelievably soul crushing and depressing. Also, "21 Grams" is pretty depressing as well. Those are the first two that come to mind for me. "Requiem for a Dream" also comes to mind. Jennifer Connelly has been in some damn depressing movies, haha.

It's pretty awful and soul crushing. And the one after it is very illuminating.

I'm sorry but some of these answers are far from "soul crushing"!

you should watch Martyrs and Audition

reply

I have. I am a uber horran fan. I don't think"X Files" is soul crushing. Serbian Film yes, Martyrs I guess, but not Odishon.

please give us some examples of soul crushing ??

reply

I did already. You should give them a go:
Threads
Repulsion
The Seventh Continent
Come and See
There Will Come Soft Rains ( animated)
Watership Down ( animated)

reply

Repulsion is the only one I have seen (or heard of). The others do seem interesting with a quick perusal. They're all Euro ??

reply

Threads and There Will Come Soft Rains are British , I think, Come and See is Eastern European, Seventh Continent is from my favorite amazing director, Michael Haneke, think it's Belgian/French.

Also, try The Seasoning House - British

The Road has already been mentioned. And man, it's depressing!

reply

never seen The Road

reply

It was scary, sad and grim...but it pumped me up
Great movie!
Duvall and Mortenson were amazing and the kid was great too
The book was really well written
Like Steinbeck...that sparseness of words that some people just have and that paints a whole picture

reply

Since you mention Steinbeck....Of Mice and Men seems to fit here.

reply

Good point db
And you just reminded me of Midnight Cowboy (i feel those are similar stories and both are pretty disturbing)
Nicely done

reply

You're right ! That movie is just as grim and realistic, hence their popularity.

reply

just settling in to watch it. thanks
