What did you watch last week? (05/14-05/20)

Welcome back everyone!
I would like to thank you all for making this thread a success with more than 130 posts last time. And some great conversations on top of that. Cheers!

My week:

https://moviechat.org/tt1019452/A-Serious-ManA serious man (2009 DVD): After all our talk from last week I was anxious to see it and unfortunately, I did not enjoy it as I wished. I can dig a movie that consist mainly of conversations ( Waking life, Sling Blade, Glengarry Glenross, American beauty, The hateful 8...) but in this one, I quickly had enough of seeing these people sit down and casually and boringly discuss life matters. I didn't hear any deep stuff, I didn't feel the emotions and I obviously couldn't connect with the characters. On the movie's Imdb page, the reviewer mentions "not being a Jew and feeling excluded or even a voyeur." I wouldn't say that much but I do see where he's coming from. I can also enjoy movies that leave a part to the viewer but this one was just too much. The movie was not all bad though, I liked the dreams parts, the settings and the ambiance were great, the acting was good and the kid was amazing at playing the pothead at the Bar mitzvah. I heard in an interview that the story was originally going to be half about the kid, half about the father and they changed it along the way. Big mistake if you ask me. 5.5/10

https://moviechat.org/tt0165361/Highway
Highway (2002 DVD): I knew I loved this movie although I couldn't remember when was the last time I saw it. So the movie itself was blurry in my mind and a rewatch was proper. It was great this time around too. Set in the year 94', Jared Leto and Jake Gyllenhaal (what more do you want?) in a perfect mix between Fear and loathing in LA, Kids, Y Tu mama Tambien and My own private Idaho. Yep, all those movies blended into one succulent refreshment that slickly tackles great topics such as youth, friendship, love, sex, drugs, Kurt Cobain's death, violence, alligator boys and road trips. James Cox did not directed a lot of movies but I sure loved the two I saw. (this and Wonderland) 7.5/10

https://moviechat.org/tt0059113/Doctor-Zhivago
Dr. Zhivago (1965 DVD): Lawrence of Arabia is in my top 20 so I had to see this, and I was not disappointed. It was a grand voyage, an epic journey of an amazing story about Russian revolution, war and, mainly, love. With some powerhouse acting, a wonderful cinematography and a good soundtrack, it did took me two evenings to watch it all but there was never a dull moment. I feel like David Lean is a bit similar to Spielberg in the sense that they succeed to attain epic proportions in their films without overdoing it. (Next one on the list is the bridge on the river Kwai.) 9/10

https://moviechat.org/tt0110955/The-Ref
The Ref (1994 DVD): "A cat burglar is forced to take a bickering, dysfunctional family hostage on Christmas Eve." Starring Kevin Spacey, Jude Davis and Dennis Leary, this movie is just was what you can expect from it; A mildly amusing afternoon comedy flick. The story involves a lot of fighting, crying, yelling and drama and they use that vehicle to be humorous. . I didn't find any part hilarious but overall it made me smile. My wife really liked it. 6/10

https://moviechat.org/tt4257926/Miracles-from-Heaven
Miracles from heaven(2016 DVD): "A young girl suffering from a rare digestive disorder finds herself miraculously cured after surviving a terrible accident."
Powerful, touching, stunning, beautiful, heart wrenching, well-acted... I freaking hated the movie because it made me wet my face so much. Seriously, it's a good "true story movie" and you see the real people at the end of the film so that always adds to the credibility. 8/10

Documentary:

Placebo: Soulmates never die (2003 24mins): Friday night I was feeling pretty groovy so I decided to pop in one of my favorite music DVD. Only to realize that I never had watched the documentary that was on it. It was just awesome, the happiness on my face gradually increased until one point where I had a big whole smile that didn't want to leave. They truly are one of the greatest band ever. My second favorite after a band you might know by the name of The doors. if you never heard of Placebo, I strongly suggest you check them out. you will either fall in love or dislike it.

I watched two t.v. series with Zac Efron.

One was part of Firefly, of which, I became totally bored with.

https://moviechat.org/tt0303461/Firefly

The other was CSI Miami.

https://moviechat.org/tt0534832/Sex-and-Taxes

Thanks to April for providing me a link.

The one episode was good; however, I do not think I am much of a t.v. series kind of person.

Ahem, I thought I was; common mistake here. I'm sure he'll catch it eventually.

reply

I loved "the ref". I watched a lot of finales like chicago fire:'(, chicago pd:) yay! And a documentary "respect thy nature" which is awesome. Yuk jared leto and jake gylenhaal are losers. And i watched a phenomenal new series, one of the best to date:The Handmaid's Tale. I read the book when i was a kid and it was awesome and the screen adaptation is stellar.

reply

"Yuk jared leto and jake gylenhaal are losers."

Haha, ok, I don't see where that was coming from.

reply

Jared leto is a known narcissist. And jake gylenhaal too. In real life. Jared leto is just gross all around.

reply

Well the guy can act, can sing and has the face of an angel so, people would probably call us narcissist too if we were him...

reply

[deleted]

Haha, that really got to you huh. I was actually referring to his role in the movie fight club. He's called angel face. Although I do not think he's ugly by any means. Especially not in the early 2000's .

reply

he was UGLY in American Psycho and yes it annoyed me because he is a real asshole in real life and really ugly and creepy looking. He is a freak.

Seems like you're a little early this week , Stone ; no matter , the timing is good .

I watched a lot of movies this past week , still am but will only comment on a few :

23 Paces to Baker Street -- First of all , I love the title to this 50's , Hitchcockian - flavored mystery about a blind writer in London stumbling upon a kidnapping plot . It's so clever and apropos . Very entertaining , lazy afternoon movie .

Splash -- Great fun to rewatch this after many years since the first time . Some really good comedy , the pairing of Tom Hanks and John Candy was inspired casting and the underwater mermaid scenes were beautifully crafted .

We Own the Night -- Gritty crime thriller with one of the most realistic, disturbing car chase scenes ever ! Strong performance by Joaquin Phoenix .

Green Room -- The characters in this film lived in a very dismal, ugly world but this was a taut , edge-of-your -seat thriller.

reply

I saw We own the night but it quickly faded away in my mind so I guess I did not really like it much.

I'm keen on seeing Green Room.

reply

I liked Green Room. Patrick Stewart was fantastic and terrifying.

reply

I've seen A Serious Man and I remember nothing from it. Nothing. That Highway movie looks interesting, though. I've added it to my watchlist.

This week I saw:

Southpaw (2015) A successful boxer loses his wife, loses his career, and loses his daughter. He has to build himself back up and win his daughter back. The story is not the most original in the history of cinema, but I quite liked the film. And Jake Gyllenhaal is great, as usual.
https://moviechat.org/tt1798684/Southpaw

Mindhorn (2016) I has-been tv actor is contacted by the police to assist in an investigation. Humorous situations ensue, with varying degrees of success. It had it's moments, but overall something didn't quite gel with me (is that an expression?). Russell Tovey was a hoot to watch, though. And the cast overall is great.
https://moviechat.org/tt4799064/Mindhorn

Retreat (2011) A married couple returns to an isolated island to work out some problems. A stranger passes out near their house, they take him in, he takes over the whole thing. It was a nice little tense thriller. Jamie Bell gives a great performance. It was thoroughly ok.
https://moviechat.org/tt1410051/Retreat

Iceman (1984) A group of scientists discover a frozen neanderthal in the Arctic. They thaw him out, and he lives! So they start studying and running tests on him. At first I wasn't sure about this one, because of the basic premise, but it turned out to be a very emotional and thoughtful film. I thought it was really great.
https://moviechat.org/tt0087452/Iceman

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) Brain-surgeon-scientist-rock-star Buckaroo Banzai and his band of Merry Me... and his team, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, have to defeat a bunch of aliens from another dimension. I really dug it. It made no kind of sense, but boy was it fun. And I was surprised at how many great actors are in this. No.Room.For.Link.

It really is! It makes you think of what it is to be human, and the ethics behind what they were doing. Not to mention it had some great emotional scenes. A lovely surprise this one.

Southpaw: I love boxing movies but I find that it's hard to innovate in the genre and I think this one succeeded in making a very interesting story. It packs a dramatic punch that hits you hard and leaves a mark, is what I say. 7.5/10

I watch the first 15 minutes or so of Minehorn yesterday and decided to switch to something else because it did not look funny. Problem is I probably switched to something worse ...

reply

I don't watch many boxing movies, but they seem to follow the same formula. Otherwise, I agree with your assessment of the film :)

If you didn't like Mindhorn by the 15 minute mark, you probably wouldn't have liked the rest. I expected it to be better, seeing Julian Barratt and Steve Coogan. But you win some, you lose some...

What did you switch to, or are we going to find out next week?

reply

It's a 2015 movie called Man up. (Not the one with Simon Pegg) I stuck with it for a long 40 minutes hoping for it to get good until I realized it was not gonna happen. The potential was there but it was not used properly. Don't think I will include it in next week's thread.

reply

I haven't heard of the non-Simon Pegg Man Up. Too bad you didn't have any luck that day movie-wise. Hopefully the rest of the week's going to be better :)

reply

Yeah thanks

reply

Have you seen Bleed for This? Based on Vinny "The Pazmanian Devil" Pazienza. Played by Miles Teller from Whiplash.

I'm not a massive Boxing movie fan (although I did kind of like The Fighter) but Bleed for This is an interesting watch.

reply

Certainly enjoyed Retreat. It had a good build to it. Delicious delicious tension.

reply

The tension wasn't the only delicious thing in that movie... That Jamie Bell's grown up nicely (I couldn't resist that one).

On a more serious note, it had some good tension. And the reveal at the end was done nicely and took me completely by surprise.

reply

Holy crap, how did I not notice that it was Billy Elliot. I heh.. may or may not have been looking at Cillian Murphy's beautiful blues. I mean.. beautiful acting abilities.

Dreamy actors aside, yeah it was well executed.

Re:iceman:
"they thaw him out and he lives! "lmao!!!😊

I rewatched Escape Plan Sylvester Stallone,, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Caviezel ,

Considering whose in it, there's not a lot of shootemup bang bang.

reply

Maybe but it's still an okay action movie.

The Boss Baby 5/10
https://moviechat.org/tt3874544/The-Boss-Baby
I don't recommend this film for small children because the plot is too complicated. But the film is a touching story that deals with themes about teamwork and family love.

Fist Fight 8/10
https://moviechat.org/tt3401882/Fist-Fight
One of the most creative, hilarious comedies I have seen in a long time. I highly recommend it. Every main character did something funny. I was laughing hard within the first 15 minutes of the film. I recommend it.

Unacknowledged 9/10
https://moviechat.org/tt6400614/Unacknowledged
Educational and entertaining if you love conspiracy theories.

The lastmovies ice cube made were disappointing for me so I did not have any hopes for this one but you just hyped me up

reply

I will post on this thread once I finish Twin Peaks... rewatched a bunch of episodes and a few I had missed in preparation for the new series. Obviously that took a lot of time so I didn't watch many movies last week.

Almost done.

reply

Twin Peaks is so overrated.

reply

I think that you'll really like the film. Ice Cube plays just one of the funny characters. The movie is more about Andy Cambell played by Charlie Day.

reply

I have only one season of Its always sunny in Philadelphia left to watch and grew warm to this Charlie Day guy. He's hilarious.

I watched the TV series on Netflix called 'The Keepers' Last week I rewatched a few films; Nightcrawler, Primer, As Above So Below, Worlds Greatest Dad.

New films I saw were American Pastoral and Free State of Jones.

reply

No comments or feedback for us brother?

reply

The Void 2016, shot in my home town at my old high school, excellent. . Kingdom Come , excellent.

reply

Oh, hmm..

American Pastoral
I found particularly sad. Personally, I found it hard to connect to that period of time in America and that state of mind, but it was an interesting window to peer into. The only problem I really had with it was a few accent slips on Ewan McGregors behalf, but they were sort of forgivable. Certainly something I wouldn't rewatch as it is a hefty one.

Free State of Jones
Had to.. haha stop this movie and finish the rest of it the next day. Was a pretty long (and akin to American Pastoral) quite a heavy watch. Pretty darn violent in certain scenes, which were executed really well (this pertaining mainly to the intro) but yeah.. it's a bit of an emotional roller coaster.

But hey, those are just my thoughts.

Also, I am a female woman, one might call a sister haha.

reply

Awesome, thank you my sister.

reply

Haha, oh no... thank you!
I'm not quite sure what for but thank you.

reply

How did you like american pastoral?

reply

Yeah, it wasn't bad. Never thought I could get so mad at Jennifer Connelly in a film. It's one of those films that has sort of been in my head a few days later. Had a similar effect not too dissimilar to watching Nocturnal Animals.

reply

I LOVE NOcturnal animals such a jungian adventure!

I thi nk ewan macgregor is really handsome and a good actor, he is also a good person, investing in important causes throughout the world, so i watched American Pastoral. I was put off by the religious propaganda of american pastoral. I felt with the title, heinous narcissistic mother and demon child they insisted on calling "mary" when her name was meredith was unsubtle and offensive to Catholics as if all jews are angels.

I'm pretty much finished with Hollywood and its agenda. Hollywood must get its propaganda inserted before approval of a script which is why i watch indies and foreign, mostly European films.

I am a Naturist but i don't like catholic- bashing or religious bashing of any kind and it was pretty blatant the way they set it up to demonize Catholicism "the child will be raised Catholic" . The film could have been a decent one if it weren't for the bias. The hatred for Catholics took a film that could have been great and made it mediocre. The moral is Don't be spiteful with your art or it will drag it down to a base level.

reply

I'm not sure if it's because I'm not particularly religious myself, but I did not see that as being a massive part of the story, was it? I mean it could have been put in so the daughter could be considered more anti-establishment. Because her want to go against the grain was so deep. It was more about her, and how misguided she was.

Hollywood can get it right. It's seldom, but it happens. It was an okay film. Just okay.

reply

No, you misunderstood the film. The story was set up entirely around the "Good" Ewan MacGregor character his name was the "swede" because according to the narrator he did not look traditionally Jewish. The film is predicated on the protagonist's Jewish heritage which is established at the beginning and throughout via the narrator, David Strathairn. Perhaps you should give it another watch, even though you found it difficult, you may understand the themes contained within better. ☺️

reply

Yeah, it's entirely possible. I did watch it rather late and missed a bit of the beginning. That may have been quite an integral part of the film. It just seemed to be mostly about finding his daughter, and the lengths that he would go to find he, and the suffering that comes with that as a family unit (to me)

And It wasn't that I found it literally difficult to watch. It was just quite sad hah.

reply

No, i knew you meant it was emotionally difficult. Lol!

reply

OH! Sorry haha. I read that.. completely wrong. Doi.

reply

Lmao!

reply

Hilarious!

reply

Yeah, I misunderstood for comic effect. Let's go with that (please.. can we go with that? haha)

reply

Yes, your joke was hilarious i'm down with that. 😂

reply

Speaking of difficult to watch-you would find the Handmaid's Tale extremely "difficult" not literally lol!

reply

Phew..

reply

You are so funny😊 nice to meet you!!!!

reply

Nice to meet you too :)
