Lurkers Vs. Posters

This has been talked about on many a board; but I thought I would start a thread about it. How many of you were lurkers on IMDB, and how many of you were regular posters? I had been a somewhat regular poster from about 2004-2010, and then I pretty much just lurked after that. Most of the information I was seeking someone had already supplied, so there was no need to really comment. They say that you never realize what you have until you do not have anymore, and that makes me wish I had posted more those last few years. However that regret is subsiding, because I am really enjoying the communication on MovieChat! I was just interested who was in the same boat I was. Also I was curious about who came here and was not an IMDB refugee.

Wow! I'm sure glad to see that I'm not alone! Well it looks like we have all found a great place here. Someone said on another board that they think IMDB will bring the message boards back next year and start charging. The jokes on them because I bet they weren't banking on MovieChat!!

Isn't it interesting how many people who've come here were lurkers -- or primarily so - on IMDB? I was surprised, and actually touched, to find out how many are like you.

I have great difficulty believing IMDB plans on bringing back the message boards next year, or any time, and charging for it. Unless they're incredibly stupid, they'd have to know people would go elsewhere, be that here, or tMDb, or IMDB2, or IMDBA, or wherever. At which time we'll be established as a group, even if a splintered group, with no use for IMDB anymore.

I was on IMDB for over 10 years, and very rarely did I post a comment or start a thread. I'd mainly read what others were discussing on the movie/show specific boards. But I'd argue that the lurkers are also IMDB refugees. Even if we weren't regular posters, we still benefited from the boards.

I agree with that. Lurkers or no, we're all IMDB refugees. Too bad you didn't post more. I enjoy your posts, and am glad you're posting here.

I agree. We all benefited from those boards whether we were regular lurkers or regular posters.

I was a lurker and a poster. I would post on my favourite boards and lurk on most of the others.

I was both. I mostly lurked for 7 years and posted for 3. I often enjoy just reading an exchange while I'm in public transport. Better than reading the news...

I even resorted to googling which actors were bitchy and went to their pages to watch people fight over them. 😅

I was primarily a lurker on IMDB - maybe made 10 posts over 7 or 8 years. But I lurked daily - no, several times a day. My main interest is classic Hollywood films, so a lot of posts were several years old - no point in replying to those. I have commented occasionally on the "Chicago" shows: PD, Fire, etc. I logged in so infrequently on IMDB I can't even remember my user name over there. I am excited about this replacement site - maybe I'll end up being a regular poster.

lurker. i think i had 3 posts in 10 years. any time i had a question about a movie, i found it had already been asked and answered.

I was mostly a lurker. I think I may have posted 20 times, maybe? I do wish I had posted more. Trolls did major damage there. I posted more at the end when I knew they were closing it down. I LOVE movies and I love reading about them. I'm so happy this place is doing well. I hope it keeps growing and growing!
