CHROME IMDB ARCHIVE!!!!

I just discovered or was shown of a Google Chrome Extension that has archives of all or many films on IMDB, even old films like The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921)! Wow! What a gem! Have any of you used it or know about it? What's your opinion?

reply

I rarely use Chrome, but I downloaded it and gave it a try, and think it works great. I went over to one of my favorite boards at IMDB, and lo and behold, when I scrolled down, there was my favorite message board once again.

But of course this will only work for those archives that were secured prior to the closure of IMDB. I tried it out on a few of the obscure shows that I liked, and the boards were missing. But all in all, it's pretty complete.

reply

It wouldn't be bad to starts some threads from existing ones. Heck two people could have a copied conversation to bring back a dead board. It would make it easier to think of topics.

reply

I've thought about that Strannger. We already have a good many of them in place here, and will soon have what's available after the update. Some of those old threads were hilarious, and I'd like to see them resurrected again.

Unless I'm posting something really quick and casual, I make drafts of all of my conversations. I just find it to be a good practice.

reply

The reason I signed up here on Movie Chat is because it has archival messages though not all, and certainly not for the older films. I checked 4 older films so far, 2 from the 1920s & 1 from the 40s, & another from the 50s - the latter 2 are not as well known and they do have archival message boards on there (chrome extension).

Sometimes, you just want to read the boards and share or reply, you don't really want to nor can't think of a thread to make. Of coarse replying on there may not necessarily generate a notification to the previous posters unfortunately.

I also tried some actor boards and it seems, the extension only works for films & tv.

reply

"I also tried some actor boards and it seems, the extension only works for films & tv."

I think they just grabbed what would be considered the most popular threads Vicky, so they probably just felt it wasn't worth archiving the threads for the individual actors. I'd like to have them as well, but am happy for what we do have.

reply

This site just got a major update and a lot of these older films now have archives. Since I've been on a Rudolph Valentino binge, I just checked 3 of his films:

-The Sheik
-The Son of the Sheik
-The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Wanton, The problem I found with imdbarchive is, they don't have actor's boards on their website at all, therfore, none on their IMDb message board extension either. Sure, it looks good on IMDb, but no actor's boards really turned me off from that site. 😩 Anyhow, I love moviechat too much to ever leave so I put the moviechat message boards on IMDb instead.

reply

I also installed it for MovieChat StyxNyx. The only problem is that I don't use Chrome.

reply

Yeah, that would present a problem. 😩 Well, what browser do you use, if I may ask?

reply

No problem StyxNyx, I use Firefox. Part of the problem for me is that most of the shows that I follow are older obscure shows, with often obscure actors. So the archive helps with a few, but many are missing. Take the show in the link below for example, which was one of my favorite shows of all time. Only a few of the actors in it went on to bigger things, so the already minuscule threads that were at IMDB, are now lost forever. Not blaming anyone of course.

reply

They have an extension for Firefox.

Ok, I see what you're saying there about the film. I went to Joe Pantoliano's board and was sad to see that his board is empty, just like your film. I'm sad about that cause Joe did replies on his board...not many actors will take the time to reply on their boards like that. It really is sad that stuff like this is gone...old obscure films/shows/actors especially. 😒

reply

β€œThey have an extension for Firefox.”

Wouldn't happen to have a link for that would you StyxNyx? I did look last night, but didn't see it?

reply

I'll go check and see if it's on that page I pulled the Chrome link off of. I know for certain that it said there's an extension for Firefox. Ok...brb.

reply

Cool. No biggie if there isn't though. As long as we have access to all the archives that are available that's the best that one can expect I guess.

reply

After you download that and have it on your browser, click the icon that show up in the upper tool bar, click the icon so the little dropdown box shows then install the script, click on "dashboard" in the box and it will bring out the whole page so you can see if the script is there, if it is, then go check IMDb to make sure the message board is there.

When you get TamperMonkey installed, just scroll down a tad to my other post and click on the "script page" and install it

reply

Ok wanton, I'm back. It only mentioned of it on the page, does not actually have a link for it though. Buuuut...I have a link! Got off the TamperMonkey website itself. Here's the link: TamperMonkey for Firefox

reply

Thanks StyxNyx . I thought that Tampermonkey was specific to Chrome, and that Greasemonkey was specific to Firefox, but I guess you learn something new everyday. I'll check it out though.

reply

I thought GreaseMonkey was for Firefox too but, apparently they also have a TamperMonkey version for Firefox, Dolphin, Safari, Edge, Opera Next, and UC Browser. I learned something new too

Isnt Jim archiving the IMDB posts/boards here on MovieChat? I looked at a few boards here and it was the IMDB boards going back 3 years. He also said he was archiving more and bringing them here.

reply

Yes, I pm'd him the link as well. I watch a lot of older films like I mentioned in the OP and these older films don't have an archive here so I was happy to com across this extension.

reply

Wow! I tried this and it works well! Is there a way Jim could do this with MovieChat? I would love to have that as a base to post from. Also, I was not able to do it on my iPad, only on my Mac. Is there a way to add that extension on mobile devices? Thank you for the information.

reply

Also, it would be great to add the extension on edge since I use that a lot on my hybrid tablet.

It would be a great idea if Jim could get in touch with the guy who did this and they can join forces somehow! :)

DrM, this is what they have for moviechat in order to put the message boards on IMDb. It's a bit different and not quite as simple as imdbarchive has. You have to go to Google Chrome extensions and add TamperMonkey, and here's the link to the script you need in order to install moviechat's message boards onto IMDb. Script Page I haven't pasted the script to TamperMonkey yet but I think I'm going to to see how the message board will look and work on IMDb. How to install MovieChat's Message Boards onto IMDb

Here's the TamperMonkey extension. TamperMonkey for Windows and TamperMonkey for Android

Be sure to install TamperMonkey first, and then the script.

Ok...I just now installed the script and it went straight to TamperMonkey for Windows, then I went to IMDb and the MovieChat message boards are there! πŸ˜„ It looks really nice but it's a bit smaller than imdbarchive's is. I like it though! It looks exactly like it does here only smaller. You should give it a shot if you're interested! πŸ˜„

reply

StyxNyx! Thank you so much for going to the trouble of writing about this! I am not a tech person so I'll have to reread your instructions and give it a shot tomorrow when I am fresh for some computer frustration! Anyway your help is much appreciated!

reply

You're welcome DrM! πŸ˜„

Oh dear, just noticed my links didn't CCP at all, I'll fix that right now.

reply

Okies, all links are there and clickable! 😊 This should be pretty easy to do...for Windows, I'm not sure if there's extra steps, or not, with Android though. Best of luck to ya DrM! πŸ˜‰πŸ‘πŸ‘

reply

Oh and I forgot to add, I feel the same as you about not wanting to go back to IMDb so I'm torn about adding some extension only to go back to IMDb. So.... I don't know what the right thing to do is.

reply

I know, but, after 3 weeks of knowing about this, curiosity finally got the better of me...lol! πŸ˜‰

reply

I'm also still pissed at imdb tbh, I am so angry at them. I have been registered for 11 years but I can't control myself and still go to check ratings, trivia, & summary. :(

reply

i woud not recommend people here installing it, as it is created by a direct rival of Moviechat. Extension is created by imdbarchive.com. I'm sure Jim is already working on a way to have Moviechat on imdb

reply

There already is. Somebody posted the link a week or two ago, I can't remember what it was. Works great.

reply

[deleted]

Why are people doing this when Jim is bringing all the IMDB boards and threads here? Dont we want to fully support this site? Maybe I am wrong on this..open to replies...

reply

They are just advertising their own sites. No harm in that, really.

reply

And some people here will still use IMDb and would love the convenience of having the message boards there too.

reply

[deleted]

Flower...I think Jim's site will still be supported whether we use the extension or not. We will still be using his site whether it's here, or docked on another site. I think every link we click on, on his message boards, from IMDb's site, will still generate traffic here, of which will be supportive of his site.

reply

Styx.. As far as I know, Jim transferred alot here the past few days. All these links and installs get on my nerves so I will be staying on this site. If i cant find it here maybe I will venture there but I really hope it all comes here to one place.

reply

Flower, this site is the first site out of IMDB that I signed up for due to the archival messages.

But I have to admit, I just want to go somewhere to discuss things with people. A few days ago I also signed up for TMD - The Movie Database - because I have been getting into Rudolph Valentino lately. He was a well known actor in the 1920s. I checked here and his board had no archival messages, I checked TMD and there was 1 post there. And as sad as that was, I signed up because I needed someone to talk to about this old legendary yet bygone actor. And I have been there discussing him and obsessing about a guy who died way back then. I get crushes on dead old actors and I become a fan of them because I have romantic notions of the past, and so, I watch old films and read about old actors. That's just who I am. I love films in general, I'll watch a silent film, a kung fu film, a horror film, and the latest marvel film - I love them all. I can't help it. But there are few I can talk to about my varied taste, so, I go to the boards. Now that IMDB is gone, I will go to any board with a message/post in hopes that I can read/talk/maybe get a reply even.

And this extension delighted me because someone posted it on youtube, and I saw all the old posts on some old Rudolph Valentino films.

reply

Vicky,,,,,I totally hear you. Thank you for that.

reply

A few days ago there were no threads on a great movie called Starting out in the evening... Now there are threads going back a decade.. I am happy with that. That means the threads have begun or maybe completed its transfer here from IMDB.

reply

Same with me! Now several Valentino films and 2 obscure Valentino biopics have archival messages here! Of coarse I immediately went there and started posting on old posts! It made me so happy you cannot believe! LOL!

reply

Veloxy...There already IS a MovieChat message board for IMDb...has been for a couple or three weeks! Here's the link to what you need to do to install it...and I finally did it just now, piece of cake and it looks nice! How to install MovieChat's Message Boards onto IMDb

You have to install this extension from Google Chrome. If you're using a different browser, it will tell you in the above page, what to install. But here's Chrome's extension as that is the browser I am using. TamperMonkey

reply

i know, i already provided link to that thread, i said its just a third party thing, im waiting for something more official or till jim endorses that script publicly

reply

Jim DOES think it's amazing, and has not told anyone NOT to use it so I'm assuming he approves of it. It was made by a guy that goes by the name of "drhouse". It's all explained on this thread...a different thread than what you provided...including Jim's full comment on it. Maybe Jim didn't feel the need to say, "Ok everyone, you can use this amazing script to apply my site and message boards on IMDb!" He basically already DID give permission to use this script in this thread."PSA Script Thread

reply

Hmmmm...that's odd, your's IS the same thread, I wonder why it has 2 entirely different links to it. Oh well, the fact is that Jim said it could be a great resource and never says anything about not to use it. If he finds it amazing, isn't that good enough? Maybe you should email him and ask him more about it if you're so unsure...that would be the simple and smartest solution.

reply

All's good. Even I have it installed. Not that I use IMDB now

reply

Yeah, it seems to be a safe installment so I had to finally try it out. I, too, have just recently started using IMDb again. It's just so much simpler than trying to Google search every film and actor and then look through numerous links for what I want to know when I can, usually, find everything I'm looking for on IMDb. I don't really like using it, but it's inevitable that it's the easiest for me. 😩

reply

[deleted]

I had installed the IMDb script for MOVIECHAT two weeks ago and have never used it. I don't visit IMDb as much any more, and I visit moviechat.org every day, so its just easier for me to use the search box here to get to the board that I want to post on.

reply

why is imdbarchive.com down??
will they be back?

reply

I just checked and it seems like it is down. Perhaps there are new updates?

But just to let you know, a lot of the missing archives here on Movie Chat that were on IMDB Archive are now on here as well. There are still a number missing archives, especially for actors but it is a big improvement!

reply

yes, i read about that.
but i like their plugin for the imdb site better than the plugin from moviechat.
the messageboard integrates better on imdb with the imdbarchive plugin.

reply

Yeah, I don't use the plugin on this site at all.
