Give it time, it's only started from scratch 3 weeks ago.

It's already improved heaps since then.

Agree 100%. Jim is always adding more to this site. Soon enough, the functions you're looking for will probably be here.

reply

Keep the suggestions coming! This has the potential to be one of the best sites online!

reply

I believe it. Already many boards have posts or updated. Also April told me it may be soon since he promised some new features.

reply

I went to the FB page of this board and invited a slew of people to come on over!

reply

The ability to post pictures was never promised, and IMDB didn't have that feature neither. I could do without pic posting for a site like this, because trolls could spam the place and slow the site down, or just post inappropriate material all the time.

If server costs and lots of moderation were not an issue, then posting pics could be fine. Sometimes animated gifs and pictures can be fun and informative. But with a database of 4 million entries, it would be near impossible to keep track of everything. I think the next wave of updates will probably include what you're looking for. Links, Bold/Italics/Quote and possibly Private Messaging.

Please be patient. Jim is doing a lot already right now (retrieving the other missing content and filling in the gaps). I would imagine making all of this from scratch is really hard. And I would also imagine, in the programming and HTML world, something ALWAYS breaks unexpectedly, leading to instability you did not want. So there's probably a lot of trial-and-error work being done, and many more man-hours added to the equation that wasn't planned for.

For now, I don't see any problem posting with what we have. You can make threads, ask questions, post links (using the other method for now), post trailers, or resurrect old IMDB threads and add to the discussion. Many of the key things we wanted before IMDB shut down is actually here right now.

reply

Atomic, I totally agree with you on posting pics, that is something I don't want either. And like you said, the trolls will have a field day with posting pics if that option became available. Then it would, heavily, weigh the site down.

Speaking of trolls...did you happen to see the Politics board recently? It's flooded with nasty posts by a guy with the username, Joe. He REALLY needs to go before he destroys more boards! 😲 I never go to the Politics board but saw a thread on this board regarding this troll, so I went and took a peek. This Joe guy has posted about 30 threads in a row, of nothing but trash...it's a bloody mess!!

reply

I totally agree... I like it the way it is. It's the WORDS that matter.

reply

Agreed ! I do not want photos . It's too annoying . There other sites I use for some soaps and the photos and memes and flashing content is confusing , distracting and annoying.

reply

OMG! Those flashing one's are the absolute worst for sure! 😲

reply

Absolutely Mort! Words are what it's all about!

reply

I just took a look over there and you are right. That Joe poster really needs to go.
That's one downside to having such a large forum. It's hard to keep track of these things. That Joe guy was going berserk all this time and I never even knew (I don't venture much into that subforum).

Which is why I'm not against having moderators and a reporting feature. The community can look out for these trolls, and help point them out to the moderators. The moderators help Jim out so he's not overworked taking care of 4 million entries by himself. Seems like a sound system to me which I would fully support.

Moderation also doesn't mean lack of free speech and expression. Reddit is a popular forum and each subreddit forum has 4-5 moderators.

reply

I am totally for mods too, we obviously NEED them...soon!!

reply

If it's true that pictures and trailers would drastically effect the cost and functionality of the site then Jim shouldn't do it, but if the cost is nominal... it all should be added immediately. I don't get how free boards can have polls, videos, images, avatars yet somehow it's impossible to do here. Every successful social media site... Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr allows, even emphasizes using visual media. I don't get why it's so unachievable here and I'd guess it would help in bringing people from competing boards.

reply

It isn't hard to add that functionality at all. I've built my own forum from scratch years ago and image/video markup is pretty easy. I can agree that images posted by trolls can be a problem, but emoticons would be simple to implement for a place like this. So would ignore functionality, and further customization. I hope Jim isn't slacking...

reply

Thanks for the reply... I thought as much... but what about the cost concerns? I wouldn't worry about trolls, it would a good way to instaban people if they posted graphic or disturbing images. Maybe there's a way to stop people from posting images unless they've posted for a certain time or number of posts.

reply

It'd be possible to allow only authorized users to post images/video, but there's also safe-mode functionality as an option. I work with it on my site to an extent, but it's still not foolproof. For example, you mark a post/comment as NSFW, hide it from non-safe-mode users. Default everybody's account (and guests) to safe-mode for that to work, or block ALL images on safe-mode, etc. There are a lot of ways to work it out, if he actually tried. For a place like this, I think emoticons would probably be your best bet.

reply

Yeah, I think Twitter uses safe mode well although it often blocks images that aren't even offensive. Personally I could care less what I saw, but I know there are old people who would be shocked to see random cock and pink all over. All I know is almost all sites successfully integrate photos, so whether they use filters or zero tolerance ip bannning, they should find a way to do it.

reply

I think those free boards are still run by a larger company that has an actual headquarters somewhere. They can afford to have servers and boards full of videos, images and animated gifs.

In a way, Jim's site here is like a new mom & pop shop that just got built. One day it may grow to something much bigger, but I'm just not sure if this site (with 4 million entries) can handle that many animated gifs, embedded videos and images.

I'm not against the use of them - I enjoy their usage on other forums - but I don't think it's that necessary right now, especially for a new place like this.

reply

Jim is working as hard as he can to fulfill everybody's requests. Besides, I have already noticed a few new improvements already, such as the "report" button for comments, the ability to ban IP addresses for those people that violate community rules (only available on Jim's end) and the "^Back to Top" button at the bottom of the page.

In summary, this fine website is improving everyday! However, a little patience is all it takes!
