Why did you archive trollish posts?

I've been perusing the archived sections of this site and am dismayed that MANY, MANY troll postings have been kept here for "posterity." Why? That garbage should GO.

reply

Imagine the work going through all the hundreds of thousands of posts on all the subforums sorting out all the troll-posts. It would take years..

And after what standard should one judge something to be trolling or not?

reply

Because there was no time to delete them. I agree that Jim should somehow delete those unnecessary posts. Probably the whole The Walking Dead board can be erased, unless someone wants to study troll behavior and their posting habits for his/her doctoral thesis, and this is a valuable data to him/her.
Also a few other boards.

HAHAHAHAHA ! ! !

You know, while I was eventually drawn almost exclusively into the POLITICS board, that place was a cesspool of trollitry....every single group you can think of was bashed on 24/7. It occurred to me this morning as I was looking forward to logging in here...maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing if that board (POLITICS) and some other non-industry related boards were just axed.

I wouldn't cry.
.

reply

I never went to Politics board until the last two weeks or so (since the eviction notice from Col) cause I heard people talking "there be trolls and dragons there, avoid it for your dear life!"

But when I actually went there, I saw some trolling but also some interesting conversation. Not everything there was bad. But I agree that politics board can easily be erased because there are new developments and topics in politics every day and there's no point of keeping old posts. It would be like reading a newspaper 7 days old (and older).

reply

The IMDb politics board basically turned into Stormfront by the end. I posted there a lot in the past but I stopped around 2011/2012 because it just became too much of a cesspool to deal with anymore. It basically became a den of trolls, racists and fascists to the exclusion of almost all else. The amount of hatred there was extraordinary, it would put a Klan rally to shame.

So far the politics board on this site isn't too bad, but I already see signs of what it used to be. I agree, it might be better to just get rid of it. This is a movie site after all.

reply

I heard that politics board became a cesspool when some members of 4chan joined. I don't know what year that happened.

Anyway, talking about troll posts... there are still posts made by Col Needham here, and they should be deleted first. We don't want to give him any reason to sue this site.

Then once they're contained....we blow them up?

Another option is we just give an IQ test to new members?

Or Battle Royale, Jennifer Lawrence, Hunger Games, Sylvester Stallone, Paul Thomas Anderson etc. These were all pages filled with trolls. I would just totally erase them and start from the beggining.

Once the site gets up to necessary standard to be able to do that, I am sure he will hire or ask volunteers to be moderators to keep those posts at bay. The best way to start out would be to see what boards would still be active and clean those first. Since we have not the slightest idea of where most of the traffic will be, it would be hard to determine what movies'/shows' message boards to clean up first.

I belonged to one site that drew unbelievable trolls...and some of the mods were very very tech savvy. They would track ip addresses and (using other clues from postings they'd made on different sites) sometimes determine where a troll was posting from (often at work) and call their boss. A few times they even posted a Google Maps Ariel view of where they were posting from!!

The first step was to begin addressing them online by their real first name. These mods had NO MERCY...and trolls were dealt with swiftly.

I'm not saying the team here will ever have the capability or man power to do that stuff....but I've seen trolls get decimated.

And it was fun.
.

reply

That sounds incredibly fun.

reply

It was then funny when the trolls (who were often quite young, and just stupid) would start DEMANDING that the site remove their posts, and their accounts, and stop addressing them by their first names...and the mods would reply "I'm sorry, you have proven to be a threat and our security teams must continue to track you."

Then the trolls would start threatening to call the police and the FBI, and the mods would say stuff like, "Go ahead. We have already forwarded a file on your disruptive and deceitful behavior to them"

Eventually they'd get blocked, but not before they got a good scare : )

It was so theatrical and creative. It inspired awe.
.

reply

Haha, I've scared a couple guys that would try to harass me online. They usually leave clues about themselves that I would pick up on and just had to do some simple searches. I can imagine that sinking feeling they probably got in their stomachs when I would use their real name.

reply

<< I can imagine that sinking feeling they probably got in their stomachs when I would use their real name. >>

I know it would freak me the f#ck out! It would be like a HORROR FILM!

But some people deserve it.
.

reply

:D

That's pretty funny. I'd love to see that more often. IMDB should have done something along these lines early on.

reply

I mean, can you imagine if a troll called the police or FBI and said, "I was on a website....AND THEY CALLED ME BY MY FIRST NAME!!!!"

The officer would be like, "...and?"
.

reply

"sometimes determine where a troll was posting from (often at work) and call their boss."

Or ever better, call their MOM, since many of them are likely kids.

reply

Mmmmmmmm! Though I imagine many trolls have equally horrid, troll-like parents...so that could go bad. But, worth a shot!

reply

Or you could just not read them. I know that's a radical idea that seems to blow the minds of many people but if you can get over the horror of having already read God only knows how many posts that OUTRAGED you then give my outlandish idea a try.

Have a blessed day.

reply

I just ignored them...well, all but one that I had fun playing with for awhile. I couldn't resist...lol. 😉 But usually, if I started reading something that looked trollish, I'd just skip to the next post.

reply

He didn't save posts one by one and reading them all first. It was done by a scraper, and the scraper is not smart or discriminating. It just scoops everything up, it can't tell the difference between diamonds and mud. It needs a human brain to make those value judgements, and jim is busy adding all the cool stuff people are asking for, so he (thankfully) is not spending all his time babysitting.
Eventually that stuff can be cleaned out, but it's certainly not the highest priority.

reply

Since this user has only complained on just one board about posts and complained more than once anyone want to bet it's the troll themselves complaining? Lol I read all about the creepy Rod and the screenshots. He's one crazy guy and oddly enough I saw one of the mentioned sock accounts Naterdawg over on IMDB2. Sounds to me like you are just a troll looking for attention. If you were really that upset about all the troll posts why focus just on one board? It's a board with no traffic! Why focus so hard on one board? Trolls are so stupid.

reply

You are talking about sifting through thousands of posts here that would likely take years to accomplish. I don't know about you, but I actually like the fact that my old posts are saved. Keep in mind that I also was successfully able to carry over my IMDB username to this website as well.

reply

Me too. My old posts are here and I like it. That's why I think this person is the troll mentioned in the posts on the only board they are complaining on. I've seen old crazy trolling posts all over here but this person is so focused and set on calling attention to one section and posts. Why do that? I'd bet this "woman" is the sex crazed stalker troll talked about so much on the board she/he wants cleaned up.

reply

I have to agree with you as I normally just try to ignore crazy ones like that.
