Imdbv2.0 and moviechat, which is better?... Don't forget our real enemy is IMDB

Imdbv2.0 is great, it is probably the place where most IMDB rebels are at now, i was very happy that they were very quick to react and give us hope, they even might have inspired this site to be made. As great as it is, it still wasn't what I hope it to be, it didn't feel like the best solution to IMDB, I couldn't find forums dedicated to individual TV series title and the fact there is no way to find old forums discussion about old movies. That was rather worrying as I will have to create a new thread again to discuss my confusion of something that has already been discussed many times on IMDB (I know many threads is missing in this site) and I doubt there will be much replies, as the movie will be very long ago, so having TV/Movies archives is a great +. The familiar style and feel of IMDB on this site was very welcoming compared to v2.0. No hate on imdbv2 but I genuinely Think that this is the BEST ALTERNATIVE to IMDB out there.

I know that this site surfaced very recently and that we should be patient for the arrival of new features but they should seriously secure the login/signup with ssl

I use both and respect v2.0 for it's different approach

I joined TMDb and this site but prefer this site more. I love the simplicity of it. And, for the most part, I'm seeing more and more familiar names here too, which makes me feel more at home. Glad to see a lot of the nice one's! 😊

All in all, I'll still pop over to TMDb but, I've pretty much made moviechat my new home.

reply

I'm on TMDB too, but don't go there nearly as much as I do here. I just prefer the look and feel of this site and actually have encountered more activity. Maybe I just don't know where to go on the other one, but I don't think it's any less dead than it is here in terms of individual boards.

I don't fault anyone for using either one though, it's all a taste thing. I don't know if one needs to be on top or not either. If each has a steady flow of traffic and even crossover than what's the matter with them co-existing? Like others have said, it promotes competition and for them to keep in touch with their base, and update the site as needed. I'm pretty much making my bones here, but we can all get along!

I'd say for a baby site this place has been pretty popping in regards to the general boards! If only that would trickle more into the individual ones, than we'd really be rolling.

I only went on IMDB2 once, and it was sort of an insult on my eyes, haha. I don't get the appeal of a formatted site like that, kind of the same reaction I have to reddit. The layout is just frustrating and overwhelming for me to hang around long or navigate. But whatever works for someone, I want them to be able to discuss this stuff as much as I do!

p.s. and you've been posting a lot! I say that in a good way, you're doing your part certainly! Keep it up ;)

I was way more excited than I thought I'd be, but bam! They were there and it really felt like it was moving along nicely. It's quite impressive considering how young this place still is. I can only imagine it'll happen again with the next update!

I wouldn't they that here on Moviechat we have more activity per se. If you like to discuss in general boards liks this one or below, yes Moviechat and IMDb2 have higher counts of discussion. But if you like to chat about individual movies, than TMDB is way more active. Of course you haven't the IMDb archive there, but a lot more discussions or replys than here on Moviechat.

reply

Yea. That's what I wanna get back to, discussing individual films not just general discussions period

reply

I feel ya on this too. I get a bit discouraged when I go to an individual board and not much is happening, especially in comparison to the general boards.

I think it's just a matter of time though. Once the site develops, more people hear about it, and seek out places to chat about this stuff it'll expand. Hopefully! I just keep reminding myself to be patient and that it's moving along faster than I expected in the first place.

I try posting on those dead boards, hoping that it shows there is life and interest there because I think it keeps people from posting if it's totally quiet. So, if I have to talk to myself for a while until more people feel like jumping in or they feel like it's a place they can have discussions again...so be it, if it helps! Everything is sort of a process and in flux here, so just trying to go with the flow. I believe after a while it'll pick up more.

Yes....we're just getting our sea legs, and bonding, before we eventually branch out to our favorite show boards, etc. We're still stuck in ONE of the five stages of the grieving process, somewhere : )

The image of you hiding amongst threads from 2007 is so funny!

reply

For me, it's just going to be a matter of getting notifications and maybe a feature where we can quickly see which boards have gotten the latest posts, before I get serious. :D And I think that's also when promoting this site will be most effective and productive.

reply

This site should have a "Let's Chat" section, like TMDb, which shows all the discussions that are active. That'll invite people to join in. (Email) notification might also help, I think.

reply

100% on the same wavelength with you, Stratego.

reply

I see what you're say but I don't think he should do that, take someone's idea that's working for them and adding it on this site or trying to replicate it so people can come here instead. That's unoriginal and uncool. So far, I haven't seen any sites that has that so Jim should come up with his own section/feature.

Well, this site has already been copying IMDb in many ways. I don't think TMDb has a monopoly on showing active threads on the main paige. But it's helping that site to get more traffic and it might help this site. Plenty of people here are complaining about being turned off by individual boards being dead.

reply

If you go on TMDB main page, it's nothing but sections: Let's Chat, then down below is section of shows and movies but yea let's chat is the draw but it's about promoting.

reply

And if you show the active boards on the main page here or a link to a page showing them, then people won't think the boards are dead and they'll be encouraged to join in.

reply

True

reply

Something eye-catching, brief, and cool to look at on the top of the home page (I know "cool" is not very descriptive, but I trust Jim's taste, and BTW I really liked and miss the Trending Discussions feature that he had on the main page in the beginning).

Back to the "recent posts/active boards" tracker... As long as it's not text that just blends into the rest of the front page, it will work. How about a banner across the top, right under the main search banner? Kind of like how on IMDb that real estate was for the newest trailers or movies coming out this week, on MovieChat it could be for the 5 or so boards that have gotten the latest posts.

Aaaannnndd, I just peeked at the front page, and he did it! Jim, you are simply amazing.

reply

Yes, the feature of communicating which boards have the newest posts, and linking to them from the front home page, would not be a new thing. And even if it were, I don't see how anyone can have a monopoly on that idea. :) Considering the breadth of this site (is it over 4 million unique pages?), and the newness of this community, finding each other's posts on individual movie/show/filmmaker pages will be like finding a needle in a haystack unless we coordinate which boards we're talking on (which isn't a very organic, natural approach, ha) or we have a way of knowing where people are. Some kind of tracker on the front page would be great.

reply

For me I like this one the best so far and this is the one I will be using on a daily basis for now. 2nd would be TMDB I think with the colorful format but it also felt weird and didn't have many posts...I like how this one is...exactly like IMDB lol...I hope it does the best and ...upsets them. This one will do the best I feel.

reply

TMDb is getting more and more posts every day. Just check the "Let's Chat" section to see ongoing discussions.

It was a huge shock for me as I didn't even notice the notice until about 4 days before they were going to close the boards. I was devastated when I saw it!! I immediately started searching for alternative sites and ran across TMDb and moviechat.org. When I saw that this one had archived the IMDb boards, I felt a tremendous sigh of relief...I knew right then and there that this would be my new home. 😊

Screw you IMDb, we don't need you anymore...or at least...I don't!! 😠

reply

I'm with you! Screw the money monsters! This is our home now :)

reply

😄👍👍

reply

Yeah, but so far it's the same as here, where people mostly talks about the migration, how much IMDB suck and how this new board works. There it has just moved a bit more out to the subforums than here.

reply

Not entirely true. You go on the lets chat section it's nothing but discussions of films, shows, and celebs mostly.

reply

Well it's like 50% pure: "Are you also here from IMDB?" topics on the "lets chat" overview. Nothing wrong with that, and nice to see ppl contribute to something new, but it's not so different from here, also considering TMDb has a bit of a head start.

reply

Their individual boards still seem fairly dead too though, unless I'm just looking at the wrong ones. People can still come here and see that there's life through the general boards. It's sort of the same as going there and seeing their Let's Chat is lively, but not much else.

I know they have the benefit of having been around for a longer time, but they seem kind of in the same place in regards to that right now, in my eyes. Like I said though, I could be missing something.

reply

Just click on the Let's Chat feature and you'll see all the boards that ARE active.

reply

I think it makes sense the kind of activity you're seeing on these sites these past few days, though. TMDb has been around 8 years and seems to have an established community, IMDb2 is a forum format that is very familiar and thus easy to use, MovieChat is the new place and more experimental (interfacing with archives), whose bones are being built from the ground up around an existing library.

The users here are as new as the site itself. It makes sense that we've started off by getting to know this place a bit, connecting over our mutual motivation for being here, while Jim has been building out the pages and features that will make this site increasingly easier and more productive for us to use.

I like that we've started out more as a community first, then building out. Starting out with the data and the bones all in place is nice, too, but it's harder to want to talk at all if you don't trust the group of users.

See you all around the other boards soon enough. :)

reply

I will be using both and another for my soap operas.

reply

TMDb or not TMDb...They are having the same chat over there about this site..This is what one guy posted in response to someone saying MC.org was just msg boards and little else

You have IMDB for basic movie info, which is WAY better than this site for movie data - for example, IMDB will have 100+ actors listed for a movie while this site will have 5. Haha, are you serious?

Then, you have MovieChat.org for discussion, which again, is WAY better than this site for discussions. Not only do they have archived posts from IMDB, but they also have a more active community.

TheMovieDB doesn't really have a place in all of this, it's not as good of a data source as IMDB and not as good of a discussion place as MovieChat.org...go figure.

So the debate is raging...I prefer this one as the format is familiar and we have the achived boards which are a great source info for me..I always read old posts anyway..Thank Jim they're still here !!

reply

That's not true. I've been over to tmdb all the time and many film boards (old and new), shows, and celebs have many discussions about that particular film, show, and celebs. Maybe there's posts about IMDb refugees but a lot is the topic of which board they're in. Have you been there, LATELY?

MovieChat might got the older posts and discussions but all I see is the general discussions having more active community than individual posts that majority are nothing but archived posts from IMDb and maybe some new posts. TMDB Lets Chat section shows you the discussions from films, shows, and celebs that's showing great improvement now than days ago when it was relaunching.

So yea, I like MovieChat and TMDB but I personally think the latter is better because we finally seeing many discussions on films again. It's never gonna be like IMDB and so is this, IMDb2, and other forums but TMDB is becoming a good, no, great for discussions just like what IMDB was and so will this.

reply

I hate to say it, but TMDb seems to be more active right now. The Let's Chat section has more and more posts every day. Most of the activity here is on the general discussion boards. But with all the recent improvements, this might be changing.

reply

I read somewhere that TMDb is 8 years old, while MC is like 10 days or so, imagine MC in 8 years.

reply

Yes that true. However, not only did it not have a discussion board but it didn't have that much traffic due to mostly IMDB. The owner decided to leave it out dusty with a couple of members. When it was informed about the boards shutting down, that's when decided to relaunch it and add new features and discussion boards by a lot of people.

reply

tmdb is close to what imdb was, moviechat seems to limit its goals to the forum.

I can understand about Reddit (never liked it) and imdb2 but Tmdb is easy to navigate. It's almost navigating IMDb when it was up, even when you're trying to go the the msg board. It's also getting more messages/discussions by the day now. Moviechat has almost the navigation almost. General discussions on the front page but you have to go on search to go to a page for the msg board. It has the trending section but TMDB has the let's chat section that's almost the same.

"Every site is talking about bringing in more members and talking about why theirs is better than the other. And every site is working hard to make their website the best. It's a lot of heart and passion everyone is investing.

For me, the conclusion therefore is that all the sites are at the same place (Square One) and people can choose their favorites, multiple or all."

This ^

It's quite amusing when you think about it. Somewhat endearing but at the same time frustrating when all I want to do is drag everyone into one place - specifically here.

I can only guess and wish that the majority find their way here because in all honestly, this place resembles the IMDb message boards the most, and it continues to be geared and designed towards discussion in a very effective manner. Those who mourn IMDb should find solace in here because it's pretty much its doppelganger.

reply

[deleted]

Moviechat because it is still in its growing phase. IMDbv2.0 sounds very poserish to IMDb.

I would want to see the day when Moviechat becomes the fan equivalent to IMDb, without the mention of IMDb. Of course, because it is a fan offshoot, it probably will not have everything IMDb has due to producer listing their newest shows or movies.

reply

This here will definitely be my first choice. I used the IMDB boards mainly to get opinions and info on movies and shows that I had just watched, and since the threads are all archived here this is my place. I also prefer this look, not because it's similar to IMDB but because it's open and simple. I hope it will get a bit more traffic, but so far it's quite relaxing and people seem to be in a good mood. Right now it's a nice place to be.
