I have to agree. The movie was bad like almost any other movie in 2023. Oppenheimer, Killers of Flower Moon, and this, all super long super boring movies hyped by the media. There is nothing to watch anymore, prefer to rewatch older movies. Unfortunately, I was also disappointed with the unfaithful adaptation. The beginning is fine, they just try to provide a backstory but they change the whole issue at the end and the whole story changes. Tob (the name isn’t mentioned in the Bible) didn’t want to marry Ruth and Boaz was doing Ruth a big favor. Ruth wasn’t supposed to be the hot girl everyone fighting over but a poor widow who was a burden that nobody wanted to carry apart from Boaz. Because critics have an agenda. Depp wasn’t an obvious choice for me until I watched the movie. He is perfect. His French was also impeccable. I don’t know what they did but it worked. I believe all these bad things Walt did either still hadn’t happened or she didn’t know about them when she was putting it out for her boss. As far as she knew, Walt was a great father dealing probably with terminal cancer and still she was all over her boss. Therefore no excuse for her behavior. It has an exciting premise but frankly after a few episodes, it becomes quite boring and repetitive. How much material can you produce for a show about a mafia guy who ends up in a small village in Norway? How much funny material about the differences between the mentalities of a sophisticated criminal and the parochial mentality of people living an unbelievably boring life? I am surprised the guy didn't commit suicide in the first season: I would if I ended up living there! One other thing is the cast of characters. I don't know about Norwegian cinema but the local actors are very amateurish. That’s why the series remains very limited. You need real secondary characters to make the show interesting. Van Zandt can’t carry the whole show alone. I am not sure that American conservatives are always as cynical. They often really believe in nonsensical religious ideas I can’t understand the obsession with her. She was constantly on my nerves in this movie: her way of walking and especially her speaking. Maybe she was supposed to represent a stupid girl who ruins everything. In that, she succeeded! I have now watched most of Sautet‘s movies and have reached a conclusion. Some of his movies are masterpieces of the highest rank like The Things of Life or A Few Days with Me. Some are OK like Cesar and Rosalie. Some of his movies really are not that good like A Simple History or Mado. I think this is what distinguishes great from good directors. A great director like Kubrick doesn’t have any bad movies. A good director like Sautet has some weak/bad movies. I couldn’t find any redeeming aspect in this movie. The story was all over the place. Sautet has some great movies but unfortunately many of his movies are below average. What wonderful things some people find in this movie is beyond me. Robin was very progressive. I doubt he would question anything from his camp. Those who do are odd ducks and not from the mainstream. No, he aaid that he just had an accident on the way to David’s workshop. Overrated?! It’s a practically an unknown movie! That’s what is in fashion right now, unfortunately. I am pretty sure if you dig deep you will find intentional serious historical inaccuracies in the movie for the sake of promoting the cause. Today, when every woman is described as breathtaking or stunning, speaking about this subject, is difficult. It has been a while since I have read the book but I remember that Mitch's wife is described as very beautiful and not an average-looking woman. Everyone desires and wants to seduce her. The girl on the beach is described as innocent and not particularly stunning. Jeanne Tripplehorn isn't certainly ugly but she is definitely a very average-looking actress. If the director had wanted to be faithful to the book, some 90s beauty should have been cast, think of Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut or Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, or Sharon Stone in Casino. I think they have made a mistake by casting Jeanne Tripplehorn who really doesn't fit the profile. I wish someone explained this! Great comment, thanks! Agree! The tone was very annoying and most of the things said bordered on nonsense. Great comment! Thanks Probably one of the best comments on the forum! Agree 100% Calm down, buddy. I know, you really like this movie and find it deserves a place on the top ten list. No need to get a heart attack over some criticism.
