Both romantic interests for Mitch were very plain.

Not saying they were ugly but they were plain. I am talking about his wife and the lady on the beach.

His wife I don't fancy, but is a good looking woman that could make a great wife for this role.

The one on the beach was hot enough to be tempting, and the situation and her willingness made her great too.

What were you expecting instead ?
If you notice, a more stunning and slutty girl is used in the bar, but was too obvious a temptation for him to bite.

I wouldn't call them "romantic interests." One was his wife and the other was some random woman he cheated with.

I don't think either of them were plain. Both were very pretty.

Although I do think all the women Cruise is cast alongside are plain in comparison to him. I don't think it's ever a good match, looks wise. Except with Nicole Kiddman of course.

I feel the same way about Johnny Depp. None of actresses he stars with seem like the kind of women he'd want to be with, except for Winona Ryder of course or his castmate in 21 Jump Street.

Today, when every woman is described as breathtaking or stunning, speaking about this subject, is difficult. It has been a while since I have read the book but I remember that Mitch's wife is described as very beautiful and not an average-looking woman. Everyone desires and wants to seduce her. The girl on the beach is described as innocent and not particularly stunning. Jeanne Tripplehorn isn't certainly ugly but she is definitely a very average-looking actress. If the director had wanted to be faithful to the book, some 90s beauty should have been cast, think of Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut or Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, or Sharon Stone in Casino. I think they have made a mistake by casting Jeanne Tripplehorn who really doesn't fit the profile.

Jeanne Tripplehorn is a beautiful woman IMHO, but I do have a 1992 article concerning an actress I adore, who, unfortunately had a short career, called Cristi Conaway where she said that having filmed Husbands and Wives with Sydney Pollack, where she played a high-class call-girl he'd solicited, she said "I wrote Sydney a note saying, ‘Look, I had an affair with you. It’s time for me to do this movie. You owe me.'"

It's a shame he apparently ignored her. I guess he was impressed with Tripplehorn in Basic Instinct. Still, Conaway was/is stunning (IMHO, better-looking than willowy red-head Kidman, or rangy-looking Roberts, and less annoying and insincere than the admittedly stunning Sharon Stone), and maybe if she'd played this role, she might have become a big star. Although I think Pollack directed one good movie in his career (i.e. Tootsie), I've never been able to forgive him for this terrible casting decision, ESPECIALLY in view of how bad his other films as director were around this period (e.g. Sabrina, and the most undeserved Best Picture winner in memory, Out of Africa). Really, I don't know what he was thinking, but it was one of his MANY misjudgements as a filmmaker.

reply

Are you serious??? Nothing against the woman herself, but Cristi Conaway looked/looked more like a second-rate Playmate than the stunning wife of a succesful young lawyer.

reply

It sounds like the movie wasn't faithful to the book in that case, but you're right, people have such different beauty standards these days.
