Things you learned, picked up, or questioned in the movie?

-Social Justice Warrior Activists Ajax and Sersi wanted to end the patriarchy and the order of things along with life itself by going against the cosmic beings with their deity powers; selfishly stopping Tiamat from birthing which in turn prevents the birthing of billions of other planets and populations. Needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many.

-Celestials themselves seem as incompetent or prone to failure as a normal human being would given their size and big brain yet they keep screwing up with Deviants then later on the Eternals for not doing what they made them out to do. Instead of giving Eternals basic animal brains no smarter than a dog (apex predator to Deviants) or emotionless minds, they gave them the ability to feel for other lesser races and have the ability to gang up on their masters and overcome/overpower them (something that we'll see with AI one day). Talk about being idiots not worth worshiping/following.

-Ikaris had more feelings for Sersi by not killing her than Sersi did for Ikaris when he went on a suicide run towards the sun. Fitting name for his end.

-Do most deities get bored then eventually mingle with the lesser beings to mate and create hybrids? Happens a lot apparently, even in Greek mythology.

-References to Superman/Clark Kent for DC Universe crossover?

-Avengers nowhere to be found apparently, especially when the Eternals ignored the Chitauri Invasion, Ultron's rampage, and Thanos's cosmic fury.

-Since Thanos's 'snap' wiped out half the population of the universe, this would've paused many Celestials from being created which would be against the rules or functions of the Celestials and would require them to interfere if not the Eternals yet they did not. Why the plot hole? Even Doctor Strange/Captain Marvel were absent since they deal with cosmic beings to entities.

-Phastos is a hypocrite when he's the one that gave tech for humans to kill each other with, including the H-Bomb.

-Why would you create a disabled Eternal like Makkari (still has some of the best fight scenes with those fast punches from all angles)? Oh right, nvm, incompetent Celetials like Arishem's lack of perfection being the leader and all.

-Ikaris is suppose to be the strongest of the group yet he keeps getting pummeled by the other Eterenals and Deviants. His only ability is flight and constant mediocre to decent laser eyes while rarely using his punches or even a kick. Can't even keep up with Makkari like how Superman would against Flash.

-What's the point of Ajax to medic heal when she wasn't even needed after she died? Eternals did fine without her even after taking lots of blood squirting damage, especially Ikaris.

-Marvel's introduction of more characters is starting to get a brain drain on me since I don't know any of the newer characters as they're not as iconic or well known as Iron Man, Captain America, etc. For instance Thano's brother Eros (mixed it up with Ego whose also a Celestial) aka Starfox and the Black Knight (Blade reboot reference).

-Chloe Zhao, like Nomadland, tries to recreate some of it in Eternalsland with the love interests, love making, and inconsequential slice of life drama sequences in a Marvel movie.

-Someone sitting behind me in the theater that I overheard said this movie was better than Shang-Chi and Black Widow...

reply

I don't have much of anything to say to this except that it was an interesting read...very interesting perspective, thanks for it.

reply

You're most welcome :). I wouldn't mind seeing your own perspectives if you have any to share as well, if you've seen it that is.

reply

I agree with the person sitting behind you in the theatre. I'm not talking about huge margins but of the three Eternals is the one I'm mostly likely to rewatch in the future.

reply

Which 3 are you referring to?

reply

The last paragraph of the OP (perhaps I should have pasted it in to my reply) Eternals - Black Widow - Shang-Chi.

reply

"..-References to Superman/Clark Kent for DC Universe crossover?"

Aye, that'll bring in a couple billion dollars at the box office.

reply

I learned I don't care enough about this movie to drive my ass to the cinema. Then pay on top of it and sit for 2.5 hours? Meh. Pirates are your friends. I'd rather relax at home.

Had some thoughts on some of the OP's thoughts:

-Social Justice Warrior Activists Ajax and Sersi wanted to end the patriarchy and the order of things along with life itself by going against the cosmic beings with their deity powers; selfishly stopping Tiamat from birthing which in turn prevents the birthing of billions of other planets and populations. Needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many.

-Celestials themselves seem as incompetent or prone to failure as a normal human being would given their size and big brain

Sersi and I think Ajak both talked about the Celestials' way being outdated, suggesting ways could be found to birth Celestials without destroying entire planets full of intelligent life.

I also got the impression that Tiamut itself cooperated rather than destroy earth. Arguably, though, Tiamut just gave Sersi the power to do what she did.

-Ikaris had more feelings for Sersi when he went on a suicide run towards the sun. Fitting name for his end.

I thought it was more like he was too conflicted to go on. It didn't seem like any of the Eternals were actively trying to kill each other so much as stop each other.

Also, I like to think it wasn't a fitting name for his end so much as the reverse (fitting end for his name). Remember, the myth of Icarus flying too close to the sun was invented by Sprite to troll Ikarus in Ancient Greece. When Ikarus couldn't bear living any longer, he chose to make Sprite's story come true.

-Do most deities get bored then eventually mingle with the lesser beings to mate and create hybrids? Happens a lot apparently, even in Greek mythology.

My own guess is that those ancient pantheons, being based on the humans who invented and then worshipped them, just behaved like humans because they were invented by humans.

-Avengers nowhere to be found apparently, especially when the Eternals ignored the Chitauri Invasion, Ultron's rampage, and Thanos's cosmic fury.

What happened with Tiamut may have occurred too quickly for the (remaining) Avengers to assemble and address.

Sersi explains in the film why the Eternals ignored everything else in the MCU up until now. They only deal with deviant threats.

-Since Thanos's 'snap' wiped out half the population of the universe, this would've paused many Celestials from being created ... Why the plot hole?

I don't see a plot hole here

Yes, Thanos put a lot of Celestials' births on pause. These beings operate on scales of millions of years. Thanos and his snap would only set them back a few decades at most. Even a few centuries would be trivial to them.

So Thanos delayed Tiamut's birth, which the Avengers then accelerated by brining back so much (yummy to celestials) intelligent life so quickly.

-Phastos is a hypocrite when he's the one that gave tech for humans to kill each other with, including the H-Bomb.

Not a hypocrite; just very regretful. He wanted to give the steam engine to Babylonians, true. But I doubt, very much, that he gave humanity the atom bomb. Humans made it themselves, perhaps building off tech from Phastos.

Remorse isn't hypocrisy, especially when it comes thousands of years later.

-Why would you create a disabled Eternal

There seems to have been a deliberate attempt to balance their powers. Or it could be a side-effect of moving faster than the speed of sound.

reply

I think that scene implied Phastos was Oppenheimer.

reply

Unlike the other Eternals who decided to live single lives for obvious reasons, I questioned why Phastos would decide to have an emotional involvement/investment in a family knowing he's immortal.

>-Do most deities get bored then eventually mingle with the lesser beings to mate and create hybrids? Happens a lot apparently, even in Greek mythology.

Eternals do not do this in a movie. The only child is that of a gay couple so we can safely assume its adopted.

>-Since Thanos's 'snap' wiped out half the population of the universe, this would've paused many Celestials from being created which would be against the rules or functions of the Celestials and would require them to interfere if not the Eternals yet they did not. And 5 years later it was snapped back. Celestials think in terms of millions of years, so they probably havent even considered what to do about it by the time humans fixed the issue. Also it took humans only about 100 years to double our population, their plans would be at best delayed by a tiny fraction of the birthing period (100 years in 1 000 000 years period).

>-Someone sitting behind me in the theater that I overheard said this movie was better than Shang-Chi and Black Widow...

Now that is a real brainscratcher. Did you hear right?
