She could have, but they were either nasty to her or trying to use her. If I was Marta, I definitely wouldn't have.

Harlan seemed like an alright guy. If he wrote his family out of the will, they probably deserved it.

She's a weasel bastard thief, she should get murdered next because of that.

Of course anybody with an ounce of decency would split the loot evenly with the other heirs.

reply

I think you'll find you're quite alone with that opinion.

reply

Yeah

reply

What did she steal?

reply

Stuff that didn't belong to her nor her family, with a weasel poor good girl facade.

So you're just going to ignore Richard cheating on his wife with that woman Marta's age, Joni using the money Harlan gave her for her daughter's school on other things that she shouldn't have, Mark going behind Harlan's back to try and sell rights of his books against his will to Netflix, Ransom being a lazy schmuck who refuses to get a job, and the fact that Linda was already super rich from the real estate business she owned and therefore didn't need the money? You're just ignoring all those reasons Harlan didn't give his family the money? Okay, but it seems to me you are just being willfully ignorant.

reply

Nope, I understand all that I just don't appreciate her fake goody two shoes attitude when in act, as we see it in the end, she's as greedy and cheeky as all the others.
Not only that, it's all stuff that never belonged to her and was rightfully theirs.

reply

I didn't see her as greedy. But whatever.

reply

If she wasn't greedy, see OP.

reply

If Harlan didn't think they deserved his assets upon his death, then it would be against his wishes for Marta to give it away to them. Why do they deserve any of it?

What shows in the end that she's greedy exactly? Because she's standing on the balcony?

I don't think you know the definition of stealing. Everything she has at the end of the movie was GIVEN to her.

reply

Tomato tomato, nothing was really given to her, it's an inheritance from a mad old man who had a grudge against his family and heirs. She accepts it gladly and gives nothing back to the people she considered her family 5 minutes before.
So she's pretty much taking their family fortune because the old fool is letting her, it's not like she found something that didn't belong to anybody and she has to keep it.
It's not stealing only because she was cunning enough to butter up the old fool into letting him think she's worthy of it in place of his own blood and family. That's pretty much the best way to steal something: letting the idiot think he is giving it to you!

Certainly by the end of the movie she was glad in "her house".
What about the mug that says "my house my rules my coffee". Her house? What an usurper!

She deserves the inheritance of her momma and papa from bublefuck south america where she's from. That's all she truly deserves.
The inheritance from this guy is truly deserved by his family and no one else. He could have given Marta something since there was so much to give, something to make her life better, with the limit set to an equal share as every other family member. Certainly no more than that.
She doesn't do anything to deserve so much credit, and definitely nothing much more than the rest of the family members. This dude was old and mentally unsound, such a will is proof of that.
And because of that, such a will is not valid.

Reading this particular conversation and even before OP's "her momma and papa from bublefuck south america" comment had me thinking one simple thing- OP is racist. There absolutely has to be some underlying issue here that leads OP to these absolutely absurd points trying to be made. There is no logic behind thinking that the one person in the old man's life that treated him with any respect and decency should get nothing while his terrible family who cared nothing for him should get it all. Blood doesn't mean a damn thing when they don't treat you like such. This comes down to one thing. Marta is not white. She is taking a white man's fortune from his white family, and OP just cannot stand to see it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I hope other posters see this and realize there is no point in arguing with OP.

She may have viewed them as family because they seemed to accept her for taking care of Harlan, but as soon as the will was read everyone turned on her and their true colors started to show.

She was willing to help the family with the money until they started to blackmail her using her mom's undocumentation as leverage.

reply

How is it rightfully theirs? It was Harlan's. He doesn't owe his fortune to his kids, or grandkids, once they are adults. Other than some legal requirements due to marriage (he was a widower as I recall so this isn't an issue) and if they live in Louisiana (the only state that I know of that mandates that adult children have some rights to an estate) he can will his estate to anyone he wishes. It belongs to him! Exactly the same as he can decide to spend every penny before he dies.

If he dies intestate, than his children (not his grandchildren unless they are deceased) are his legal heirs and the estate would be divided between them.

reply

I mean, she could, but... why??

In my experience, the expression "give them an inch and they'll take a mile" is accurate. If she pays them once, they'll all be back with their hands out once they've blown what they were given.
