Just what you'd expect it is

Each of the three stars play the roles you would expect. Especially the men, they play the same roles from all their other action movies.

You've seen this movie dozens of times over the years.

Cliches and same old tired formulas and twists.

Obviously setting up for a sequel at the end. Please no.

reply

I haven't watched it, but it sure looks boring, generic, uninspired.

reply

Completely. You could be in the mood for a thing like this if you want mindless popcorn time, and I appreciate those for what they are. but even then it's kind of a chore with this one.

See also : The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, The Misfits.

I can't remember the last film with the Rock, which did not feel generic...

reply

Yeah... I was watching The Jungle Cruise the other day and fell asleep.

Red Notice was slightly better, I actually found a couple of Ryan Reynold's scenes funny (even though he's playing a similar character-humor he has shown us before)... Gal Gadot is extremely beautiful but a terrible actress and the Rock has been boring-stale for years now.

reply

Yeah it was pretty much paint by numbers.

I was expecting more humor though. Reynolds was supposed to be the comic relief, but he had nothing to work with because The Rock's character was so incredibly boring. They didn't riff off each other at all.

I think I lightly chuckled once or twice through the entire thing.

reply

Completely agree about it being quite humourless.
I like The Rock and Ryan Reynolds but there really wasn’t the level of chemistry, sass or punch I expected in this kind of film.
It looked good, the locations and antiquities were great but it really just didn’t have any zing.
I think the same writer/director also directed Central Intelligence with The Rock and Kevin Hart and that had more charisma and humour than this one, although that too was very formulaic as well.

reply

Paint by numbers is a pretty good analogy. Although it seems that the numbers were chosen by a not that smart artificial intelligence. But they are working on it, more of this will come soon.

reply

Pretty much yes. I like the three leads but this was just so bland and cliched that I couldn't finish it.

INTERPOL,ART THEFT,TUXEDOS,INTRIGUE....TERRIBLE WORDS TO DESCRIBE A ROCK/REYNOLDS PAIRING...THIS SEEMS BUMBLED FROM THE GET.

Yes to the OP. Netflix spent their most money ever, and it’s still a McMovie. The script and directing are McFormulaic, which is not surprising, because the same guy wrote and directed it. It’s a buddy movie-meets caper movie-meets action movie-meets half of a “funny” movie-meets Tomb Raider/Indy Jones movie. So MUCH meeting, so little time. The result is a mess. It FEELS long, which is the kiss of death. Now, if they’d tossed in some quality smut . . . well, I’d be more forgiving.

The only good thing in this was the casting of Rityu Arya. She is magnetic and deserves more exposure, and that is not a double entendre. It serves her well to be seen holding her own with Gal Godot, who is already an established star. Rityu has It.

Also, Ryan Reynolds is not aging well. When did he decide to try to make a career out of being a more annoying version of Robert Downey Jr.? If The Rock had ripped off his head and defecated down his neck, that would have been ALMOST as good as smut. That PLUS smut? Best picture of the year.

Netflix, so you know: I’m available for contract work as a consultant.

Yep. One wonders when/if/how streaming can deliver a "classic." Or maybe not.

Something where -- even in fantasy adventure -- the human stakes are high, the danger is real, the characters matter and -- yes -- the action is something special.

I'd list these going back to the late 50s:

North by Northwest
The Guns of Navarone
The Great Escape
From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
The Train
The Wild Bunch
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Die Hard
The Fugitive
The Matrix
John Wick(the original only, and "maybe")

...all of them, special in some way. Red Notice really only has the "now" of Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds as being about our top bankable stars of the moment...with Gal Gadot bankable enough and lovely enough(though I found her "villainous" line readings to be pretty poor.)

It's hard to disagree with any of the replies. I found it mildly entertaining while watching but totally forgettable. $200m budget??? How??? I get that Dwayne Johnson and and Gal Gadot each got $20m, and I'm guessing Ryan Reynolds got $10m at least, but where did the other $150m go? Meh, I really don't understand how a movie like this costs $200m.

reply

I kind of think it's now a Status Symbol to brag amount how much the movie costs to try to convince viewers they pulled out all the stops.

reply

It is exactly what you would expect. It is a fun film starring Reynolds and Dwyane Johnson. They are not hilarious, but funny. The film is great teenage-level humor. I give a full review here if interested-
