I called it.It's official.

They made old Higgy a younger woman.Just like they made Watson on Elementary and Horton on Macgyver young women.Does Hollywood have something against old white dudes.

Unlike Watson though, the trailer make it look like there will be sexual tension between Magnum and Higgins. That's going to be weird.

reply

Stuff like that does amuse me. Replace a man with a woman - equality! Then go and make the woman all about what's between her legs.

reply

Not sure I would have worded it that way.

reply

What I mean is, it kind of defeats the purpose of casting a woman in a man's role only for her to be a love interest/eye candy for the leading man. Rather than her being a well developed character in her own right. Better wording?

reply

Better. Don't want the P.C. Police all over us.

reply

It's alright, I have a permit.

reply

LOL

reply

Well they're making it pretty obvious that's the direction they're taking her character.

reply

As a woman I approve these remarks..
Screw PC

reply

Hahahaha!

Errr, no. What makes you think that? I thought it was clear I was mocking the supposed progression only to have the character be defined by her appeal to the main male character.

reply

Is that how she's defined? Or how you've chosen to define her?

reply

On the few episodes we have to go on, that appears to be how she's defined. If you wish to offer a counter argument, I'm all ears.

reply

So she does nothing but attract the male lead with what's between her legs? Is that what you are trying to say?

Is what's between the legs of any of the other characters a factor in their characterisation?

reply

I don't think you're understanding the point I'm making. You're getting hung up on 'what's between her legs'. Is her role bigger than being a source of sexual tension for the male lead? At this point, it doesn't seem so. I've offered you the chance to demonstrate that there is justification for casting a woman in this role and that there is more to her role than her sexual appeal but you've chosen not to.

reply

No. You've stated that, since one character happens to be attracted to the other, they are defined purely by their sexual availability.

reply

Yes.

reply

Elementary destroyed the Watson / Holmes dynamic that was established in the stories that was part of magic of them. In this Watson is pretty much Holmes' intellectual equal. I'm sure it's because the show runners didn't want to get flak from having a woman say stuff like "Good God, Holmes! Astounding!" and marvel at his crime solving abilities because that would imply that women aren't as capable as men.

reply

Maybe they have something against uptight whackos that seem to forget that they can watch reruns or DVDs of the original series if it's that important.

reply

uptight whackos?.Really.A bit much don't ya think. If your a fan of this ultra PC washing of old shows trend then good for you.To each their own. Some people are not. Also i do find tv to be somewhat ageist lately.when old tv shows are rebooted most of the time they take characters who were much older in the original and reimagine them as pretty young people.Hawaii 5-0,Macgyver,Elementary and Magnum for example.I bet if they do a Murder she wrote reboot Ms Fletcher will be rebranded as a beautiful 20 something woman.

reply

"uptight whackos?.Really.A bit much don't ya think. If your a fan of this ultra PC washing of old shows"

Whoa! The perferct storm. This could nether be called "Ultra" nor "PC". So the uptight whacko thing is even more pertinent that I had thought.

reply

Considering how much this trend is sweeping tv shows and movies ultra works fine for me.And i contend that gender and race swapping has everything to do with PC politics.I'm all for Feminism, inclusivity and equality but i would rather it come through originality instead of this dumb trend of rebranding old characters.

reply

After the latest episode (Lie, Cheat, Steal, Kill on Nov 1 2019), it's pretty obvious that the producers have gone against all the fans wishes and decided to have Higgins become Magnum's girlfriend.

reply

Maybe they should rename it "Castle in Hawaii" or "Moonlighting in Hawaii" since it appears that is where they are taking this show.

reply

Definitely.

reply

Well now they have introduced a love interest for Higgins who totally outclasses Magnum. And Magnum is very obviously jealous.

Well at least they went more realistic by making him a doctor and not an astronaut.

reply

Yes, but they've thrown new love interests into the mix before, they generally only last 2 or 3 episodes before it turns back into a will they or wont they hook up between Higgins and Magnum. Which is kind of dumb, if they wanted this to be anew version of Heart to Heart then they should have just had them get married to deal with her visa issue and be done with it. They can't possible string along the will they or wont they that long because Higgins is starting to show her age and is very quickly going to be too old for anyone to believe Magnum would chase after.

reply

Well they did it. As of today (5-6-2022) Magnum and Higgins are a couple.

reply

It was inevitable. The dynamic between Higgins and Magnum was a highlight of the original series. Here they dumbed the dynamic down to romantic fodder.
