Trailer looks good - Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019) Discussion

Yeah, put this up against Joanne Woodward’s She How She Runs, a film about an unofficial (Bozo) running The Boston Marathon (not for nothing, the word’s oldest annual marathon footrace) and tell me again how good this looks, and how inspirational it is. And I don’t doubt that it looks really good and is really inspirational, but I am a marathon historian, and I doubt that you have ever heard of She How She Runs.

I actually have heard of See How She Runs but only because I've run the Boston Marathon 3 times and someone talked about it back in either 2015 or 2017 when I was doing it. I had forgotten about it until reading your post! Just watched the trailer on YouTube and it looks very made for TVish...Not a terrible thing but the acting in the trailer leaves a lot to be desired lol.

But even if that looked fantastic it wouldn't change my thoughts on BRaM.... looks good and I'm excited to see it!

I have seen "See How She Runs" when it was originally aired on TV. But just because someone makes a movie about a newbie runner deciding to run a marathon doesn't mean no one else can make a movie about a completely different type of person running a marathon. I mean -- in terms of human interest-- there are MANY stories that can be told about people who decide to undertake this type of journey.

Honestly? Does not look good to me.

It kind of looks like a low budget Rebel Wilson movie. The kind of movie where the overweight woman has to be excessively obnoxious - sorry, "funny" - in order to justify her position as the movie's lead, while having no other real personality traits. Meanwhile, the entire film will spend 99% of the time having the woman push herself to lose weight while telling us the movie really has nothing to do with weight loss, but is really about loving yourself, which will be completely untrue.

I would recommend watching Shrill or even My Mad Fat Diary before seeing this, as strong contrast material. These shows convey this concept well, and don't pretend to be something they're not, the way this movie already seems like it will.

I've seen a couple episodes of Shrill but couldn't get into it despite being an Aidy Bryant fan. As someone who has run marathons and once thought it impossible to personally do, this one just resonates with me personally. Also I'm a fan of Jillian Bell and I'm glad to see her get a chance at a leading role.

Don't mind me being cynical. It might be perfectly good. I just don't get good vibes off of movies about overweight women that are so focused on the woman's weight. It's just so overdone imo. But then, who knows? I might fall in love with it. I'm happy to eat my words if it's good.

Also, I would say Shrill is a grower and it doesn't have too many episodes. But if you didn't like it, fair enough. It's kind of odd and unexpected, especially for Bryant, but I liked it - especially the end.

Maybe I'll give Shrill another shot. There are just too many shows these days and every day someone is telling me I "have to watch" something else. Sometimes I miss the days when we only 5 channels and just watched what was on lol

Haha, yeah I miss them, too. When everyone was telling me to watch Firefly and I was like, nah, I'm busy with Smallville and I pretty much ignored all other shows.

Saw this last night and really liked it. Despite being a guy there were a few scenes that really hit home. I hope at some point you give this one a shot; based on your preconceived notion I'd be curious to hear what you think of it.

That's how it works exactly. Based on your preferences, what you've seen previously, what you like, etc. you make assumptions and then choices. You're not a blank slate when you see a trailer - hence why trailers are marketing tools. They're marketed to people's preferences so people will want to see the movie.

But no, I reread your post - you seem to be certain of the entire plot without ever seeing it. That doesn't exactly add validity to your opinion.

The movie is real and heartfelt, and frankly it's your loss.

My exact words were "it kind of looks like". But yes, I can often predict the plot of a movie from the trailer, sue me. I haven't lost anything coz I haven't seen it. But when I do, I already said I'd be happy to be wrong. I don't go into a film hoping it will be bad, but if the trailer makes it look so, why should I deny that?

well there are other ways to decide if you wan to see a movie. I rarlely watch the trailers as they arnt a good indicator.
I generally read the synopsis , then read a few amateur reviews and take an average.

Shocking how accurate you're synopsis is of the movie based simply on the trailer. lol...

I watched this movie over the weekend and it was actually a decent film. It has a few funny parts, it might have been better with Amy Schumer as the lead or possibly Rebel Wilson. Still, I'll give it a 6 out of 10. It's kind of entertaining.

Not really that surprising though, since most B movies for women aren't given too much thought. I didn't mind it, but I definitely did not love it because it was exactly what I thought it was going to be. The comedy didn't hit as well as it could have. The way they tried to show her as a "before" so they could show her transition later, like simply not having her brush her hair, seemed really silly. And the most interesting bits - the scenes with bestie Gretchen, which showed the complicated relationships a lot of women have with weight in direct relation to their thinner friends - those were too brief.

But it's not unwatchable.

It's more drama than comedy, kinda like The Big Sick. I wouldn't describe it as "a lot of fun". It's a very good movie, though.

Surprisingly a lot of depf even more so than Hustlerz or Gold Finch.
