Is it worth seeing?

Been going back and forth of whether or not I should bother seeing this; it sounded way too reminiscent of "The King of Comedy" only not as good and less original (from what I have heard). That is why I have not seen it. But is it actual worth seeing or does it just tell basically the same tale as in King of Comedy?

I have frightful little time between growing demands of my flourishing career and growing family; any movie time I find is like less than 4 hours a month and I usually save that for movies I can watch with my wife or with my kids. So do I let Joker take some of that time or no?

Note: I am looking from input more from the side people that enjoyed it; but can tell me if it is actual worth it. if you didn't like it obviously you are going to recommend not seeing it.

Ignore the King of Comedy and/or Taxi Driver comparisons. Yes, aesthetically speaking the movie does draw most of its inspiration from 70's Scorsese, but that's about it; thematically and narratively, it's much closer to American Psycho or Fight Club than to anything of his.

As for whether it's worth it... I'm gonna go with "yes, but temper your expectations". It's a very good film, beautifully shot, excellently acted and quite well written, but if you're anything like me, all those accounts of "8-minute standing ovations" will just leave you scratching your head in confusion.

Hmm, interesting; yours has to be one of the first comments that says it was not derivative of King of Comedy/Taxi Driver.

That is kind of what it sounded like; it was being over hyped and was not nearly as good as the rabid fanboys would lead you to believe. I am sure it is an okay enough film and I will try to watch it someday; but I will not go out of my way to make time for it any time soon.

Hmmm... With so little time, one wonders why you'd have enough to hem and haw on a chat board about whether or not to see it. I would think an open debate with others here would be even lower in your queue.

didn't realize i can watch a movie in 10 to 30 second segments like writing a text.

No one said you could. But when one describes free time as "frightful little", it's strange to spend any of it on an internet panel discussion on whether or not to try a certain a movie. And it seems that you've already read and heard everything before coming here. Sometimes you just have to take a chance and watch the first few minutes to see if it draws you in rather than pretending it's such a critical decision. Between reading, pondering, and posting, I'm sure you've already spent as much time for a movie that was first reviewed last summer. How much more data do you need? The script? The plot spelled out in detail? What's left? It's about your personal taste in the end anyway.

If it was a critical decision I wouldn't be asking strangers on the internet; it is just a movie; and I was undecided if it was worth trying. I got the answer I was looking for from others, so I am pleased. in regards to time; part of my job is a lot of documentation (for auditing) it is very much a tedious task that has to get; occasionally I like to take a break from it and discuss films here.

If I could watch a movie in 15 to maybe 45 second segments, I would do that.

reply

Fair enough. I'm happy for you now that it's finally been settled.

reply

Yes it is, I was a bit skeptical of watching this film at first judging by the reviews but found myself really enjoying this movie a lot, I give "Joker" an 8/10

reply

Cool, I already got my answer; with limited time at the moment; I decided to put it off till another time. thanks for the note that it is a solid 8/10. I will catch it at some point down the road (i hope).

reply

Ah... should had read your others responses before commenting lol.

It has very little similarities to either Kings of Comedy or Taxi Driver. It's a decent film and I would recommend it. If it rips off anything it's Human Centipede II: Full Sequence.

You are flaming, totally immature and relying on ad hominems instead of arguments. Stop messaging me I do not wish to talk to you.

Way overrated and easily skipable. JP's performance is often very good and it is the handful of scenes in which he is at his best that make the movie worth even a glance. The story is weak and the directing is mediocre. 5/10

Watch waaay in the future when your time is less rationed.

reply

Was worth watching...but not a classic.

You know, at first, I was about to say poor you, I wouldn't imagine not being able to watch so little movies in a month.

And then, I realized that you have a family and this, by itself, brings a lot of joy.

As for your question: If you are a fan of the character and have seen him in other movies (Batman movies: sure, go ahead, it's an original and interesting take on the background of the character. However, if you don't mind much about the character and the Batman universe overall, I would wait until I'd have more free time if I were you. It's definitely worth the watch, but maybe not with such limited time.
