Is it worth seeing?

Been going back and forth of whether or not I should bother seeing this; it sounded way too reminiscent of "The King of Comedy" only not as good and less original (from what I have heard). That is why I have not seen it. But is it actual worth seeing or does it just tell basically the same tale as in King of Comedy?

I have frightful little time between growing demands of my flourishing career and growing family; any movie time I find is like less than 4 hours a month and I usually save that for movies I can watch with my wife or with my kids. So do I let Joker take some of that time or no?

Note: I am looking from input more from the side people that enjoyed it; but can tell me if it is actual worth it. if you didn't like it obviously you are going to recommend not seeing it.

I’ve had it on my DVR for a week and doubt I’ll ever watch it. Recorded it because it was popular, but I don’t care about The Joker at all. Like Baby Driver and Black Panther, I’ll likely delete this from my DVR without watching. Life is too short. I’d rather watch something from Full Moon Productions, at a fraction of the budget and a multiple of the fun.

reply

lol, yeah, why bother watching a best picture / best director / best actor nominated film?

reply

not a great argument; films like 'Moonlight' and 'The Shape of the Water' also got such nomination. The Oscars and other award ceremonies have been utter garbage for years.

reply

I've stopped giving a shit what movies win best Oscar awards, as when you think about it the only people that get to vote on it are the people making movies... the same movies like Ishtar, Howard the Duck or Battlefield Earth... Now none of the actor or directors working on those movies set out to make shit, but they did... So why in the world would I think they have a clue about whether a movie is good when they create such total shit. Then add to that the vast marketing, near bribes and downright bribes that happen to get votes for a movie and there whole awards system is just complete bullshit. I tried to watch Shape of the Water and didn't even bother to finish it, my time was being wasted on a supposed bet picture - yeah I don't think so.

reply

To me the Oscars have not become about awarding quality but more of a circle jerk where a bunch of pretentious self-important people sit around patting themselves on the back and jerking each other off over how artsy and 'deep' they are.

reply

Moron? You think Oscar nominations are a reliable indication of quality.

reply

I'd take their opinion over yours.

reply

BABY DRIVER IS JUST AN AWESOME MOVIE....BLACK PANTHER AND JOKER ARE WHAT THEY ARE...BUT BABY DRIVER WAS EASILY ONE OF THE TEN BEST FILMS OF ITS YEAR.

reply

I am leaning somewhat in a similar direction. Unless a film really interested me, I might not bother. Joke was a film that both somewhat interested but then also doesn't.

reply

i hope you are joking, dude

it's fucking phenomenal

reply

Yeah, he has no idea. The movie is incredible.

clap clap clap

You seem to be 'fanboying' it up too much. This actually makes me want to see it less.

reply

I couldn't possibly care less.

Ignore some of the rabid fans, they probably never even heard of The King of Comedy let alone watched it. It really comes down to whether you want to watch a character study of someone slipping into madness. While they call it The Joker to me that is a bit misleading in that this isn't really Batman's Joker at least not in terms of sticking with anything close to the original Batman story. So if you had any thoughts of watching it because you like Batman, then I would say don't. If you want to see decent acting on the part of Phoenix, he delivers.. DeNiro doesn't and is kind of weak in his performance, which is funny when you think about The King of Comedy.

Now you mention you use your movie time to watch with the wife and kids... well this isn't a kid movie... at least not unless they are older teens. I saw it in a theater, and in hindsight would have been just as satisified if I had waited until it came to Netflix. It wasn't the must see movie many made it out to be. In that respect I think a lot of people were just following the crowd and claiming it was the greatest movie they had seen because they thought that was how they were supposed to react.

You have seen The King of Comedy and this is as you pointed out a twist on that, so if I were having to limit my movie viewing to 2 movies a month I think I could probably find 2 other movies that would be a better use of my limited movie time. At some point when you have more time you'll probably see it, but I don't think when that happens you'll think damn I wish I hadn't waited so long.

reply

totally on point

reply

Thanks, this is sort of what I was suspecting and the type of answer I was looking for. I think I will save my time and spend it somewhere else. Maybe someday I will watch it, but I will not make time for it now. thanks.

reply

Yes, its worth seeing for Joaquin's performance alone. Even more so if you're remotely interested in the character of the Joker. Personally I'm generally not a fan of comic book movies either.

And yes, it's a bit derivative but at least its inspirations are from great films and not the dreck that Hollywood churns out every other week. IMO its worth your time. You could certainly do a lot worse.

reply

Yea, it's definitely worth seeing at least once.

reply

Why can't a "family man" make up his own mind? You want to get a little more assertive before your "kids" realise their "dad" can't think for himself.

reply

So a father is a person that is not allowed to ask for advice when unsure about something? Also, what the hell does being undecided have to do with assertiveness? I think you don't understand what assertive means.

dude don't be a douche, It is just a movie that I was not sure it was worth taking the time to watch; this is like a textbook fundamental attribute error on your part. Trust me I can think for myself

If the BS stops working, resort to gaslighting.

It’s an interesting film and worth a watch I would say. I enjoyed it and JP is brilliant but it is no where near as good as the hype! It does borrow heavily from king of comedy and taxi driver, it can be a little forced in places and drags slightly but worth a watch. I am a fan of batman and the joker characters but yeah you could almost tag any popular villain on it (within reason it wouldn’t work with Vader haha)

reply

Thanks; I will probably watch it some day but it sounds like my suspicion was correct, it is not a film worth going out of my way to make time to see.

reply

It's an ok movie... nothing special compared to the enourmous hype...

It's an average, small, movie... not that entertaining, not that compelling... it's not bad, per se... i think you'll come away feeling "Is that it?"...

Joaquine Pheonix is good in it, but there is more to a movie than good acting...

reply

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. The way some people were jizzing in their pants over it maybe think it was being overhyped. especially when I heard how similar to "The King of Comedy" it was. In fact it sounds like the only redeeming quality in the film is Joaquine Pheonix's performance. I think I will watch it someday, but I will not go out of my way to make time. Thanks.
