It looks like a record number of people did actually go out the opening weekend and WOM has induced others this weekend. The Joker has it's own momentum now and is finding an audience.

Character matters and The Joker has a defined characterization that audiences can watch unfold on screen. Methinks it is going to go a bit higher than $58 Million this weekend.

Fake BO! We don't even know Saturday yet.

Calm down, calm down now. These ARE estimates of course, but at this late in the weekend they are almost always pretty much accurate and more often than not on the low side.

The Joker is of course not a traditional CBM and plays more like a Nolan branded than a James Wan branded WB/DC film. No one has any superpowers or powers or handbuzzers that can electrocute you. In other words many adults can easily get into the story without rolling their eyes.

reply

Probably as high as $61 Million after actuals are posted Tuesday of next week.

reply

Hmmmm, so after Friday the numbers have dropped ($60 Million/$58 Million to around $55 Million) a wee bit to just about above average for a CBM. What happened?

reply

There is a natural ebb and flow to general audience movie-going where you'll get a very brief scale-back.or a bit of a "hiccup"( if you will) for even the most popular films...and make no mistake...this film is white-hot.

It's also very likely that WB is low-balling their estimate to get 2 great news cycles...smiling mischieviously when they release a higher actual number a day from now.

reply

The actuals will definitely be higher. Probably closer to 60 Million. Either way, it's at 544 Million after it's second weekend. Will definitely be the highest grossing R-rated film of all time. It had a 29% drop at the overseas box office. Stunning.

reply

I know. The overseas performance has been the biggest surprise of all.

I was expecting this. I live in Germany. I bought tickets for an early Friday screening on Tuesday, and there were still a fair number of tickets available. By Thursday I checked and every single screening untill Monday was sold out. Except for Thursday and Friday screenings are never sold out in Germany.

reply

Fearmongering was nothing but media hype...

Don't know media hypes? sorry for you.

Brilliant movie, great performance by Phoenix.

reply

Glad more showed up but,
Sham for letting you be scarred off by any thing media.

I skipped last weekend because I hate people and crowds. I went to the last showing on Friday, and had the place mostly to myself... it was great.
