I desperately hope this is a return to form for Tarantino.

I'm of the opinion that everything he did after Jackie Brown is inferior to his early films. His absolute low point was Death Proof. Total garbage! I found Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained to be ridiculous, so much so I have not bothered with The Hateful Eight.

I do have high hopes for this one. I'm very interested in the era and Tarantino doesn't really have an established genre to botch like he did with his westerns and WW2 movie. I think the setting will work better with his style as well. I'm hoping to like this as much as Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.

Jackie Brown is an overlooked classic. Great film. It's not a popular opinion but I'm inclined to agree with you on Inglorious Basterds and Django. I thought The Hateful Eight was "okay" though. As for Death Proof, the less said about that, the better.

I agree, I had some fool on here say I'm a loser and a troll to think Jackie Brown is better then those films.

I enjoyed Django probably more then you did, once Waltz goes it loses it's way imo. Basterds, Waltz aside I think it's one of his weakest films. Hateful Eight is one of his better later period films, too overlong but that's been a problem for a long time with Tarantino's films.

I think Jackie Brown is a masterpiece, probably his most humane film in a way. Shame many look down on it. I still stand by his first three films are his best by a country mile. I enjoyed Kill Bill films, but it got very patchy after that.

It's not a popular opinion and you probably get lambasted by the fan boys.

I’m the fool, but you think Jackie Brown is his best movie hahahahahaha

I've heard Quentin say up until Death Proof he had a perfect record. I haven't seen all his films but I've immensely enjoyed Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Inglorious Basterds. I could not get into Kill Bill AT ALL and I hate to say it Jackie Brown was a little boring to me. I probably should watch Django Unchained, for some reason it just doesn't appeal to me.
Still, I think Quentin Tarantino is one of the greatest directors ever. It's impossible to make every movie super successful like Pulp Fiction but he's always very close. OUATIH should be a blockbuster for sure.

If you haven't bothered with the Hateful Eight, how do you know that wasn't a return to form for him?

Because I honestly do not think Tarantino is any good at all working with a wild west setting or any era other than the 1960s to the present. His forte is the modern world of pop culture, organized crime, rock 'n roll, fast food burgers, etc. He's GREAT at sarcastic noir crime movies, but even Kill Bill, which I almost forgot, was not that great, because he couldn't quite capture the semi-mythical feel of it to make it work.

Late 60s Hollywood and the Mansons, on the other hand, are perfect for him. It's his era, grindhouse action movies and go-go dancers etc. He was a small boy at the time and probably has a great nostalgic feel for the era. I don't think he has a feel for westerns or WW2 beyond what he picked up 2nd or 3rd hand from watching Spaghetti Westerns and Macaroni Combat movies. His movies didn't even capture the feel of those pulpy subgenres.

Django was so goofy and lame to me I just didn't want to subject myself to more of Tarantino's odd vision of the West. Maybe one day I'll give it a try.

I would consider Inglourious and Django as something of a return to form, or at least an improvement after Jackie Brown, Kill Bill and Death Proof. I've only seen Jackie Brown once and couldn't get into it as much some of his other films, but I realise some people rate it as his best and I may enjoy it more on a rewatch. Kill Bill has a lot of bits I just feel like skipping, and the blood and guts ending of the first one is more boring to me than anything. Death Proof is just lots of unlikeable characters speaking like I imagine Tarantino does on his days off. It's like his wet dream, but for us a nightmare.

The thing with Inglourious, Django and even Hateful is they have some very good scenes, scenes good enough to put them above everything since Pulp Fiction. They also have certain things that let them down and keep them from being up there with PF. I'm confident OUATIH can be at least as good as these last few films, going by the early critics' reception to it, but I think it will have that same Tarantino self-indulgence somewhere that again will prevent it being as good as his earlier work when he wasn't quite the name he was and wasn't too big for his boots.
