They Couldn't Get an Italian Voice Actor?

Chris Pratt is great and all, and though I've never played Mario Bros., and won't go see a movie about the game, I still plan to boycott because they've got a white guy doing the voice of an Italian character. Do better, Hollywood!

Although this post is bait, this is the Italian Prime Minister.

That's her alright. Not sure how it negates my obviously very serious not-a-troll post, but yep that's Giorgia Meloni, an actual Italian-- part Sicilian, even!

You said you plan to boycott the movie because a white guy is voicing an Italian character. The character is white and also fictional so I don't see the issue. If this was a real life Italian figure being played by an American maybe I'd understand.

Hollywood doesn't care though, maybe they should if we're going to remain consistent over actors not getting to play other nationalities.

When I first heard Chris Pratt as Mario in the first trailer, I was a bit disappointed but I kind of shrugged it off. Now, after watching the movie, I can say that he fit right in as Mario and going for the NY Brooklyn accent was probably a good choice. Don’t overthink it. It sounds fine. I loved Peach’s voice. None of the voice acting really stuck out to me as jarring. On the contrary, there was some good voice casting. I especially liked Peach and Bowser. Toad and Cranky Kong were my least favorite, but again, they didn’t sound bad. Just different than what I was expecting.

I was wondering if this movie could have saved a lot of money by just using ordinary voice actors instead of having to pay A-list celebrities? Does anyone want to see animated movies because some actor they enjoy does a voice. It actually throws me off a bit hearing someone's famous voice come out of an animated character unless they do one that doesn't sound like their own, in which case it seems pointless to have them.

reply

Totally agree, I've never understood the appeal. In fact, I'll try to avoid reading the movie posters for animated features as I don't want to know who is voicing who, as then it's just a distraction for me and takes me out of the movie.

In the movie, Mario's dad is the original (and officially still is) Mario voice if that helps calm you.

reply

That's even worse. I didn't realize there had been previous Mario movies, but a quick Google search tells me Mario's dad is voiced by a French-American actor! Double boycott!

reply

I'm more upset they couldn't get an actual plumber in the role.

TRIPLE BOYCOTT!!!
