I don’t get it, why the Oscar overkill?

The film was ok, nothing more and maybe just a little less. Why the insane Oscar overkill. It’s almost like a parody. Here we have Steven Spielberg grinning like an idiot : https://www.instagram.com/p/CpvKKfou8IK/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

It’s just so comical but in a bad way.

A lot of people love the film and it had a lot of passionate support.

Both this and RRR made my top five of the year. Best Picture winners usually get a lot of hate after the awards. I don't know if this was the actual best picture of the year, but I loved it. In a time where so many new movies are a sequel, a reboot, or just another movie in a part of a greater universe, this was a breath of fresh air. Movies like The Banshees of Inisherin, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Women Talking are typical Oscar winners. This one kind of came out left field. I think it's nice that the diversity is coming in not just actors, but types of movies that could win. Even having Top Gun Maverick (another of my favourites for the year) in the best picture category isn't something that's all that common. I mean action movies do get nominated, but they usually have more of "a message".

Yes, it was nice to see something original and really creative win. Definitely not the typical winner, but a deserving one. This was my #1 of last year.

Spielberg gave Quan his start in showbiz so he at least does have personal reasons for enjoying his success. Three out of his last four movies have flopped, so he needs to take his pleasures (a discovery of his making good) where he can.

There seems to always be that one random Eastern film every year that wins big at the Oscars. I like you didn't see the hype around this film. It was interesting but Oscar worthy....? With so many Marvel movies surrounding the topic of multi-verse what really makes this bizarre film that much different from those?

reply

It has the advantage of not being a fucking adolescent comic book.

reply

It wouldn't have mattered anyway because the Oscars barely acknowledge comic book movies to begin with.

reply

Everything Everywhere All at Once gave me very little. I like Michelle Yeoh & Jamie Lee Curtis was a bit funny but I walked about mid way. I might catch this on streaming one night. But Oscar winner, LOL , no.

reply

Yes, what is said about every Oscar favorite+winner only every year. Every year. It doesn’t matter what the film is… even a wholly unique and super well-made one like Everything Everywhere… the negative reactions to a single’s film domination/best pic win at the Oscars are always the same. Now excuse me, but THAT’S comical.

(Lol the Hollywood-hating but obsessed Broflakes being part of the discourse is as comical as it gets, but of course they gotta cry about the woke boogeywoman cuz that’s all they live for. To them there’s only one reason a film like this got all these accolades! And can’t forget about youse old-man-yells-at-cloud film snobs whining about cinema today as a whole! Broflakes and said snobs of course could be one in the same.)

Now Jamie Lee’s win for a rather one-note role/performance was… meh. Like you found the whole film unremarkable, that’s how I felt about this 1 performance in this extraordinary film. But hey, I’ll just move on from this undeserved win! As for Spielberg grinning like a supposed idiot… how dare he be happy for others! Oh no, he faked it! But even if he didn’t, he still an idiot cuz he doesn’t feel the same way as those who know better! Yea…

I’m glad you liked it and I’m happy for the cast and crew!

Oscars=SHIT

Don't you know?

I didn't love the film as a lot of people loved the film. For me, the humour was hit and miss and it was a good forty minutes too long. It wouldn't be my choice for awards. I only quite liked it.

But audiences clearly connected with it; it made a ton of money relative to its budget. And the best thing it can do -- fingers crossed -- is remind some executives that these kinds of projects that aren't connected to 'existing IPs' can make serious cash, that audiences do sometimes want to see something fresh.

And I suspect that's why it was popular with the Academy as well as audiences: a popular film the success of which may, just may lead to more risk-taking with theatrical releases. So, all in all, I'm certainly not mad at it sweeping up even if it isn't wholly to my tastes...

... but then Oscar winners rarely are. (Not that I'm suggesting it's typical for an Oscar winner. It isn't. And that's refreshing too.)

Considering I only even saw one other movie on the Best Picture list, I'm afraid maybe I am too old and / or disinterested to have a valid opinion anymore. I guess there are plenty of folks out there that did enjoy the film very much. I gave it 6/10.

Uninterested. “Disinterested” means “impartial.”
