Naomi Scott as Jasmine is Colorism

Anybody notice female characters with dark skin are always played by biracial or white passing women? Shame they found a Jafer and Aladdin actor but didn't put the effort for Jasmine

reply

Yeap, that's very common.

In the Ben-Hur remake, they used Morgan Freeman to play the Arab trader that provides the horses. SJW Hollywood someway can't tell apart between Arabs and blacks. They're all Africans, so they must be the same, and saying otherwise is racist and nazi.

reply

In this instance, I'm not sure. What colour should she be?

reply

Darker like the cartoon

reply

She was great in the part. Aladdin could have been better cast.

reply

Shes Too light skinned

reply

She looks pretty comparable to the Aladdin actor in terms of skin colour. Think you are just nit-picking.

reply

The Aladin actor is darker. Also it was rumored Naomi had to wear makeup to look darker

This is the cartoon Jasmine

Rumored. lol. Darker? If he is its not by much. I honestly think, if both her parents were Indian and she had the same skin colour, you wouldn´t be saying a thing. Think you just have your knickers in a twist because she´s half white.

reply

Yeah i wouldn't complain because this colorism its like storm in the x men movies being played by biracial women instead of a dark/Brown woman

reply

CASTING CALL.....DARK BROWN WOMEN ONLY!

reply

In the case of Jasmine yes

reply

Why is it so important? If she was the same colour with one extra Indian parent, you would be satisfied? What difference does it make what her heritage is?

reply

SHHH...HE DOESNT KNOW ABOUT ACTING YET. EVERYTHING IS REAL!

reply

I m not racist or ignorant like you

reply

WHERE DO YOU GET RACIST?...THIS IS YOUR DISTURBING, IN DETAIL THREAD ABOUT SKIN COLOR.

reply

You are ignoring the problem

reply

I AM NOT IGNORING YOU.

reply

SHHH...HE DOESNT KNOW ABOUT ACTING YET. EVERYTHING IS REAL!
How do you explain that response

reply

The character is dark skinned its as bad as whitewashing. People lose their shit when white characters are changed so they should treat colorism the same

reply

Maybe no-one with darker skin colour was qualified for the role. What is more important, someone who can act better or someone who is worse but has all the ethnicity boxes ticked?

reply

[deleted]

You are basing who you would cast, purely on race. Unlike you, I like to watch movies where the best actors are chosen not who has the most ethnically correct appearance. As it happened, the most ethnically correct actors who played Jafar and Aladdin happened to be the worst.

lol

reply

Isn't colorism you complaining about her not being dark enough?

reply

Jasmine has dark skin

reply

I know, but Jasmine is also not British or Indian which Naomi Scott is both of. You're only complaining about skin.

reply

You should get my complaint

reply

So then is it not OK to cast a black actor to play James Bond? The SJW rules confuse me.

reply

Which black actor is playing james bond?

reply

As of now none, but what I've been hearing is that "it's time for a Black James Bond" so apparently that is socially acceptable, so yeah I'm confused. Also why does it matter what actor plays Jasmine? Agrabah isn't a real place.

reply

Til that happens you can't comment. Jasmine still has an ambious look and clearly not white or light skinned.

reply

But you would agree then that James Bond shouldn't be black? Doesn't matter whether it's happened or not, it is still a topic of discussion in today's society and that isn't stopping you from having an opinion.

reply

You sound more like a racist than anyone. How old are you, like 12? Since when is it okay to base a character's casting on the color of their skin as you're doing? As it happens she's born of Indian descent anyway so that should be good enough for you, with your requirements that the character be of Asian descent. You're just a race-baiter just like half the people in Hollywood these days.

reply

Shes half white.

reply

They were probably just looking for the right person for the part. Get over it if it was the other way around you’d have nothing to say

reply

Also you do understand that Agrabah isn’t a real place right? I think the OP has some issues with race
