It's odd that Ryan Reynolds is just doing his normal voice

He starred in a black comedy horror film called "The Voices" in 2014 where he did some unrecognizable voice-overs for a dog and cat. He also provided the voice of Juggernaut in "Deadpool 2" recently.

Reynolds is actually quite talented at voice-acting and impressions, so it's odd (and a little distracting) to hear him phoning "Detective Pikachu" in.

Well, his natural voice is pretty high pitched. (Or at least it seems that way coming from a guy his height.)
So, it fits a Pikachu.

That’s right. But high pitched or not, as far as I’m concerned having Reynolds voicing Pikachu and unapologetically making it sound like it’s Deadpool as Pikachu (in other words, it’s pure Reynolds) is what makes the whole thing humorous and notable.

I almost would have expected someone like Danny DeVito to voice Pikachu (lol), but the more I think about it the more I find the idea of Reynolds as Pikachu to be brilliantly funny and far from a mistake.

If you're right, they are brilliant for the choice, because it worked on me. I'm a little older than the fans that grew up with Pokemon, so I don't have any nostalgia attached, but I do like Pokemon go,so I have a little familiarity with it. I probably would have passed on this, but RR caught my eye and he brings enough of something to make me interested.

I saw his interview piece on I think Kelly and Ryan and said straight up he had a different voice prepared but they told him they just wanted him to use his normal voice, that's what they hired him for.

One can say that is what made/sold the movie. It certainly gave it its charm. I thought it worked perfectly and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Pikapool!

Idk how you saw the movie 6 months ago to give such a review, but I saw it last night and the ending explains why his voice is like that.
