The weird sex scenes

Would anyone like to discuss the scenes where the wife lies on the bed as if she was under the effect of anesthesia to get her husband aroused?

I think it's some empty meaningless reference to necrophilia or that galatea myth.,

It might be a subtle reference to her sacrificing herself to him. A 'do what you will' fantasy. Many characters act in a way as to please the doctor throughout the movie (think of the wife's comments about buying the dress he preferred, and having to tailor it to fit her because it wasn't right for her). Even Martin's mother asks him if he preferred her with one color hair over another. On the other hand, his feelings of guilt lead him to shower Martin with attention and gifts (expensive watch), which is the exact opposite to the relationship that he has with most other characters in the story. They try to get in the doctor's good graces and he tries to get in Martin's. When the plot turns and becomes sinister, the characters scurry to please the doctor even more, but the doctor switches behaviors and starts attacking Martin. I don't know how all this ties together yet, but there does seem to be a conscious pattern to it. I really like this movie.

I think you made some really interesting points. I had thought about how the wife tries really hard to please him but I hadn’t thought of the relationship with Martin’s mom. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

This is very insightful and I think it sheds a lot of light on the film's interpretations. I'm reminding myself now of the "sacred" part of the title. There is clearly a religious/sacrificial thing going on with who must sacrifice what to whom in order to appease the gods.

It is a struggle between Cronos and Zeus, maybe...Steve and Martin...

She is clearly trying to not move at all. The guy likes necrophilia or gets turned on with people under the effect of anesthesia

reply

Yeah, I think it’s a fantasy of raping a patient after she is put under.

reply

She was starfishing it

Another weird thing that nobody seems to out is how later in the movie Colim Ferral's daughter lays down on the bed the exact same way later when she was presumably preparing to lose her virginity to Martin.

reply

I assumed this was an indicator that she had witnessed her parents' odd sexual proclivities, or heard them talking about it, and then extrapolated that this was the "done thing".

But, after reading kameeleoned_out's comment up there... Well, now I'm thinking that it has to do with a worshipful pleasing thing. She is torn between her father and Martin, in terms of who is dominant in her life. So she does what any worshiper does and lays there as a sacrifice...

I just wish I had a wife like Nicole (despite botox and fake knockers) in my bed.
