How Do White People Feel About This Movie?

I've read around on social media that a lot of white people felt Get Out was "anti-white" or "racist against white people." I feel like the only way you could be truly offended by this movie is if you were an actual racist, as this movie holds a fun-house mirror up to racists showing a distorted, disturbing version of what you own hatred could turn into.

I can't imagine a non-racist feeling targeted by this movie, as it's just that, a movie (thank God, although American slavery did actually happen). I'm curious how white people felt watching this? If you felt it was racist to have white villains, why so?

I'm a white woman married to a non white person, I liked the movie. I specially like the main carachter acting. The worst part for me was the party, as I relived some of the conversation when, back then, I introduced my boyfriend (now husband) for the first time. No one knew quiet how to act, some people just didn't know what to say trying to avoiding making mistakes, some of them made reference of the longitude of my boyfriend place of birth according with the shade of he's skin, others even worse in my opinion, said "I met a person of your race, he was a nice person" at that point we looked at each other and smiled, we knew they tried or where trying to be normal lol. He never got offended, not even once.
We been married for long time now, all my family and friend are so relaxed now that looking back it seems strange.
Did I think the movie was anti-white? No not at all. Racism is happening right now, whenever people change their own behaviour based on colour of the skin or etchic background or different religion. There is no denying some people will feel weary dealing with different people. Why would people get offended by something that is actually true and undeniable?!

I don't agree with that. The movie portrays White people as evil (all of White characters in the movie are bad, and all blacks are good) as well as implies blacks have superior genetics. If this isn't a racially biased movie, than I don't know what kind of movie would be. If it was the other way around the movie would be seen worse than "Birth of a Nation"

Still a good movie overall, but clear racial bias.

No it portrayed a community of people as evil who just happen to be white, and there are communities and neighborhoods like this in real life, don't try to deny it. it never once implied all white people were like the evil characters in this movie. the fact that people like you need this explained to you constantly is mind boggling

I don't think that the film implies that black people are geneticaly superior. I thought it was quite accurate, in that it showed how some white people think that black people have certain genetic "gifts". In any case, I think what they were getting at is that right now it's hip to be black. It was like a trend with these people.

As for the bias, we all have biases. I don't think there was anything racist in the film. But it had a very clear black point of view.

How many times have white Americans been kidnapped, killed, eaten alive and sown ass to mouth in Europe? Are white Americans xenophobic, or do these movies need bad guys?

reply

The movie could have been way worse in my opinion, racially speaking, they clearly state that "black is on fashion" that's why they have been targeting black people, if I decided to have my brain transplanted in to a black body would mean I'm not racist as I do not consider my race superior.
It would have been a lot worse if Rose's family and community were so racist that with the help of brainwashing/hypnosis/surgery would get the black comunity back in to slavery. That would b an heavy subject.

reply

There was a whole community of evil white men in The Stepford wives. Does that make it racist?

reply

I'm white and didn't think it was racist or anti-white. I thought that some of the characters were intentionally written as exaggerated stereotypes of both races, actually.

reply

No, I don't find it biased against white people. I'm white. It did remind me of what some of my own ancestors did pre-Civil war because what they did was no less horrifying than what went on in this film... So I do find that disturbing. That's not the movie's fault though.
The movie disturbs me because there is a ring of truth to it... That's what some movies are meant to do though.
It is also commenting on the world today, not just that of my ancestors... I have my own biases that I grapple with, and I like movies like this that force me to address those prejudices that I wish I didn't have.

I'm curious if black people would ever use this website

reply

Ah idk why you're asking that

I just found this movie odd and quirky.

For a while it is very good social satire as well. I'd like to see it again just to make a bit more sense out of the way it all wraps up though.

I was expecting a Guess Who's Coming to Dinner without the horror elements. All in the Family used humor to drive the point home.

reply

It didn't bother me in the slightest and no, I didn't see it as 'anti-white' at all, rather it's just 'anti-hypocrisy'.

reply

Didnt bother me. The stuff at the beginning when he meets the white family and friends, I assume Jordan Peele was drawing on personal experiences. Those comments most likely werent made out of thin air. Some whites dont even realize some of the stuff they say would be considered a racist comment.

Now if you felt like the movie was anti white or racist against white people, then Im guessing it hit a little too close to home and maybe you are racist and you hate the idea of someone calling you out on it.

reply

Yeah, the first half of it was very good in that way, portraying white people who see black people mostly as stereotypes, or who don't even realize they are just reverting to stereotypes.

I just thought it was a hell of a movie. Great acting, interesting story, a bit twisted. I didn't find it to be anti-white. I feel like white people and black people are just always reaching to find racism that isn't there. It's a damn shame. Either way, I hope Peele does more horror/thriller stuff. He may be even more talented at this stuff than he is at comedy.
