The scene where Dennis admits to the therapist that, yes, he's Dennis?

His eyes well with tears...he's realizing he can't keep up the ruse...then finally opens up about about how him and Patricia have been ridiculed by the others and don't deserve it. How they're all struggling and the others need to admit it?

I played that a couple times over, just thought it was one heck of a well-acted scene. It really sold the idea that these are definitely distinct, different people within the same person...each using their own methods to protect Kevin and all of them doing the best that they knew how. I don't know...this scene just raised my neck-hair some. It seemed...real, I guess.

Its moments like these that IMO, you can't deny that Shamayalan (sp) has talent. As much as he is or isn't able to tap into it, at least the guy writes stuff that you won't find in many Hollywood blockbusters. This is one of those rare cinematic moments that feels special...sticks with you some.

I totally agree. JM's acting is awe inspiring and I have always been a fan of M Night's dramatic abilities. Plucks at your heart strings.

I am so impressed with M Night's flair with characters that I am sometimes stunned when he does things like Last Airbender and Happening. I do like the first 10 minutes of The Happening and Airbender was based on an A+ cartoon but they seem like someone else entirely directed those movies.

Those two are his low points. I know some people include Lady in the Water (and even The Village, those madmen!) but I love those too. There was a trend on hating MNS. Everyone making fun of the "tweest" like they saw on Robot Chicken. Funny how no one ever said the same thing about Twilight Zone or any other twisty show. Trendy hate was coming of age in that nascent internet age.

Yeah, I liked Lady in the Water and The Village too. I like your "trendy hate" reference...because isn't that the truth. People are so quick to talk about "Just the worst movie ever", when even Shyamalan's worst movie is far better than so much of the garbage that's out there.
Nickelback! Apparently just the worst of the worst...yet someone's listening to them, they're selling out stadiums, selling millions of albums.
Seems like its just easier to criticize than to praise. Its so much safer. Worst case scenario and you're just seen as someone who may be a little hyper-critical, rather than some dope who's easily pleased and will watch/listen to anything. Again, "trendy hate". Something that social media has proven invaluable in making sure we can all get in on, seeing as how we're such flock-able beings, you know?

I got to ask though...what the heck is MNS?

reply

MNS = M Night Shyamalan
Because what a mouthful.

Regarding "Shyamalan's worst movie is far better than so much of the garbage that's out there." that you said above.
It is not a bad point. Even though I found Airbender to be terrible, it is primarily due to how poorly it compares to the cartoon. And The Happening had an interesting idea at its core even though the acting was an anchor around its neck (ironically, I usually dislike Leguizamo and he was the one great performance in that). Even with these flaws, I can think of movies that were far worse than these two. Even some movies that are lauded by the general public.

Movies are so often referred to as horrible that I wonder how short people's memories are that they can't remember what a truly horrible movie is like to try and sit through. Yeah, there's some bad movies, but I'd imagine most movies fall under the "unsatisfying" category, neither good nor bad, they just didn't end the way you'd have liked, were badly acted, wasn't as good as it could have been.
People throw out waaaaay too much hyperbole these days...maybe in just wanting to make sure they're heard. But yeah, you're right! Shoot, MNS hasn't really made a BAD movie. But...you usually dislike Leguizamo? Really? I don't know, I've always liked that guy...ever since Carlito's way when he played such a hate-able bad guy.
Its his sneer, huh? He's got kind of a sneer....

I thought it stood for Monday Night Soccer.

Are you ready for some Soccerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I think the fact that Shayamalan can make these types of moments and films happen is what makes his clunkers so frustrating and disappointing: you know what he's capable of.

reply

He always seems to get great performances out of his actors. It's his writing/plot choices that fail him at times.

reply

He somehow missed the mark with The Happening.

I think at the end of the day, he's talented, but not perfect. But unfortunately, he probably does things unilaterally, so he doesn't get reigned in when he needs to be.

all true!
