I do not get the buzz..This film was like "The edge of seventeen"

I saw this yesterday and was drawn into the buzz, I ready to be impressed/Blown away...but..Really..It was meh! just meh! It basically was the exact same as the film "Edge of Seventeen" A spoiled self centered teen age girl gets a reality check. In fact I think Edge of Seventeen was actually better but did not have the same amount of buzz. And best actress nod for Saoirse ronan ?! I have seen that performance by other actresses tons of times before. Laurie Metcalf was great and I get the nod but Saoirse ronan has been over hyped for that film (Not that she his a bad actress but this specific role do not warrant an oscar nom for me). I liked the mother/Daughter scenes the best but the rest of the film was a bit slow and tedious and screamed of deja vue. In my opinion the only time the film shined was when the parents were on screen. If Saoirce Ronan wins for this role over Frances Mc Dermand I will loose faith in the Oscars forever. Definitely one of the most overly hyped film I have seen in a long time.

Interesting... I haven't heard that comparison before...

I have heard that it is a rather small movie... A coming of age drama, so that makes sense...

I'll check it out as I like Saoirse Ronan, but haven't bought into the hype as I expected the media and critics to get excited about a female led film this year's Oscar to make up for the industry's scandal...

Yeah, it reminded me a lot of Edge of 17 too. I think the big problem here is sites like rotten tomatoes proclaiming it to have the best score of all time, when really the context of it is that it's a good film about teenage rebellion that resonates with people. I don't agree about Ronan being overrated, I thought she was fantastic here, but I think McDormand is going to beat her just the same.

I'm trying to go for an entertaining, informative youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see and if you have any thoughts or criticisms, i'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance. Review right here- https://youtu.be/VG9oZ4p6dDc

I totally agree! Especially about Frances McDermand deserving that award!

Not a bad movie, but nothing exceptional. A discontented teenage girl who doesn't get along with a parent. It's not as if we haven't seen that a few hundred times over the past thirty years or so.

Edge of 17 probably had the better screenplay and this had the better acting thanks to Saoirse Ronan and the mom. But yeah, don't really see the big deal. Seemed just like a solid teen movie.

I can't recall the last time a twentysomething actress was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for starring in a coming-of-age chick flick in the role of a seventeen-year-old. I always thought young actresses were expected to act their age or older in order to garner prestigious accolades and critical acclaim.

It's funny.
It feels real.
The story often goes in unexpected directions.
It's in a very specific place.
It has a lot of very good performances.

These things mean nothing to you I guess?

It's not that funny. The cliche of the discontented teenage girl has been done to death, which diminishes the feeling of reality. The story often goes off on tangents that may be flaws in the writing. It's in a place--so what, what movie isn't? Yep, it has good performances. As I said before it's not a bad movie, and that means something to me. Just not all that much.

Having seen it, I have to say it is similar to "The Edge of Seventeen" in terms of it being a coming of age movie about a self centred late teen...

It's a decent movie, worth checking out, but does not warrent the hype it had no hope of living up to...

I saw "The Edge of Seventeen" without any hype and thought it was good for that type of movie... Heartfelt and cute and un-cynical. I liked Lady Bird too, about the same, but people were talking about it as if it was something spellbinding... Something that would move us in ways we haddn't been moved before... It's not. I think this hype does a disservice to this type of movie...
