Trying to watch Season 1 - I don't get the hype

Up to episode 4 done, and I am considering dumping it.
It is slow, and has many unlikeable characters, who very easily murder people for the slightest reason - not very believable.
There is not one redeemable character yet. Who are we supposed to root for?
Very depressing.
Does it get much better?

reply

Better is subjective I guess. I think it does but there are not many redeemable characters.

Its basically The Godfather in Montana.

"Its basically The Godfather in Montana. "

The Godfather was based on factual people and events.
Except for the fact that Montana is an actual state and there are actually cattle ranches in that state, Yellowstone is pretty much all fantasy.
The God Father had award winning actors doing award winning acting.
Yellowstone has Keven Costner finishing his career with a whimper.

reply

This is definitely not a feel-good endeavor, if that's what you are hoping for.
I enjoyed it at first, but it gets very grim so I haven't missed it too bad.
I did enjoy Ray Donovan, if that's any yardstick to go by.

reply

Ya I watched all of the Donovan series and loved it. At least there you had the outstanding acting performances of Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight carrying the show.
Here I just see Costner mumbling things like 'do what you gotta do' and then his henchmen murder people.
Not many acting performances are standing out yet - after 4 episode. Except maybe RIP.

reply

It does not get better.
Season 1 is really good so I recommend finishing out the season.

Then it becomes a soap opera so you have to enjoy it as that. I'm 100 team Rip&Beth.

And yes after a while the biggest joke is that The Duttons are just out there just killing everyone and we just accept it.

I'm halfway thru season 2 and I gotta agree. I had really high hopes because the show has such a high rating but I just saw the same: melodramatic unlikable characters all caught up in their angst and family dysfunction. The show is a bit slow too, which I dont typically mind at all but it's not like a slow burn...its just slow and I actually find myself forgetting what's even happening with all the characters because its just so drawn out. Its not horrible, I'll probably finish S2 since I already paid for it but I cant think who I'd be recommending this show to, if anyone.
It could just be me. I dont usually like westerns. And I'm fresh off watching ozark and 1883 which were, imho, just better shows so maybe an unfair comparison.

Better? That's subjective.

There are plenty of series that I hated that were hyped, but so be it. I happen to like Yellowstone and my wife and I eagerly await season 5.

There is no one series that will make everyone happy. If you don't like it by episode 4, my advice is to stop watching it.

reply

You seem to live in a fantasy world, so it's no surprise you would like it.

reply

ouch

reply

Same for me. I just started watching the first few episodes, and I find it boring: I’m inclined to dump it

reply

"- not very believable."

That's an understatement.

"Does it get much better?"

NO.

reply

Season One is the only really good season thus far.

Seasons 2 - 4 are ridiculous as story lines are made up as needed per episode, since I guess they didn't think they would get a season 2.
The Beth character is a caricature and an eye-roll of a person.

But I will watch religiously and am 100% Team Beth/Rip.
