i don't really understand why you post things like this. it's a genuine puzzle to me. i always try to steelman other people's takes on any matter, assume good faith on anyone's part.
it was clear at the time the $43m figure was put out last night that those were preliminary figures. the articles that posted the number made it clear that the total could rise, and it did substantially.
eg made $60m compared to iw's $39m.
if eg behaves comparably to iw, makes roughly proportionate fri/sat/sun grosses, it will surpass the earlier film by a vast margin.
it's never good to assume. maybe eg will behave more like the force awakens and be more front-loaded for thurs/fri than infinity war. we'll find out quickly enough. if that happens, then maybe endgame only slightly surpasses iw. but that seems like a low-probability scenario. it's more likely that endgame will greatly surpass it.
it seems to me it's more likely at this point that endgame will make $300m than the odds that it won't.
there's a very good chance it won't be close at all. you ought to have known this.
this is a trivial topic, of course. there's no stakes if you're wrong. but why post something that you surely know is not true?

Like you pointed out...this may be frontloaded. It could be this sells the same amount as IW on opening weekend...they just saw it as early as possible.
As far as the early call of 43 million...Deadline has NEVER done an early read like that. They usually include their guestimate for the west coast business in their number. Clearly they were just giving the raw totals up to that point.
I assumed(wrongly) that they were doing business as usual with their early read.
Like I said...it may do IW numbers this weekend with more frontloading from Thursday previews as so many fans want to escape spoilers as this is the grand finale.
but when deadline put up that article last night, they very explicitly said that they were preliminary numbers, based on their own sources, not from disney, and likely were going to rise.
so if you read that article when it came out, about 8pm local time if i remember correctly (don't know your time zone of course) it should have been clear that these were tentative figures.
to which i again wonder, why post claims that you don't know are true? it ought to have been clear to any reasonable person that you were on thin ice extrapolating from those numbers.
regardless, at this point it's very likely endgame will make much more than iw.
the proof of the pudding is in the eating, but i'd say 65% odds that it crosses the $300m domestic mark this weekend.
Yes...what I misunderstood was I thought they were still factoring in what they expected from the rest of the night and were saying it could still pop higher than that. That's what they ALWAYS do so I assumed wrongly.
Once we see the full Friday numbers we'll get a better grasp of whether this significantly outperforms IW.
