Will Endgame surpass Infinity War?

My thoughts on this are mixed.

The buildup to Infinity War was huge and the payoff was bigger than anyone imagined. That's the first time in ages - since Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - that I left the theater in surprise at what happened. I remember that feeling from 1980 and from last May of 2018.

Here's the thing though. I also remember how 1983's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was sort of a letdown. It didn't have the heft of emotion nor payout that Empire did.

So I'm wondering (and a bit concerned) that Avengers: Endgame could be the MCU's version of Return of the Jedi.

I'm not saying it will and I'm hoping so hard that it won't. It just concerns me that they will try and wrap things up in a nice little happy ball and not give us any desperate stakes at the end. This is how we could see Endgame not coming in ahead of Infinity War, in terms of fan enthusiasm and box office numbers.

Hope I'm wrong but what are your thoughts? Will the Russo's pull a Lucas and cheat us out of a more complex conclusion to go for the happy "everything's good again" ending?

Not wanting to bicker with anyone, just get thoughts on the possibility.

It's certainly possible to make a better movie than "Infinity Wars"! I mean I really enjoyed it, but is it a masterpiece that will never be surprassed? Fuck no!

But yeah, the odds are that they'll try to jam so much into the last movie that it'll be a top-heavy mess, and yeah. The general rule is that the last film in a series is usually the weakest.

After the way that the Russo Brothers handled Civil War and Infinity War, I think Endgame is in safe hands.

I think there is no doubt that Endgame will be bigger than Infinity War, I keep getting reminders from my 12 year old son that its months away, its on his mind and all the kids at schools mind.

Infinity War was such a great cliff hanger that I can't conceive of Endgame doing less, and when Marvel step up to the plate for the big movies, they always deliver. Even Age of Ultron being the weakest Avengers movie still has plenty going for it.

I think they way they'll handle the character overload is that many of the characters that will return will do so toward the end of the movie, and not every character will be given a huge amount of time to bask in their return.

Also, its Chris Evans last Marvel movie, and Captain America as a character has really grown in popularity and people will be keen to see how his arc ends, whether he gets to be back with Peggy and whether Bucky takes on the mantle of Captain America.

Theres just too much good things going for this movie, for the first time ever, i'm considering booking this one months in advance as I want to be there opening night with my son so none of it gets spoilt by our shitty UK press.

A couple key differences I see:

1. Infinity War and Endgame were scripted and shot as one long story, so presumably the pace and quality of the two films should be about equal. There was a 4 year gap between Empire and Jedi, and the latter, though continuing the story, was an independent effort.

2. The BIG difference-- Irvin Kershner was more or less allowed to make the movie he wanted to make with Empire. When Jedi was filmed. George Lucas took a very active role, and it shows. Jedi was still fun, and it had the momentum of its predecessors to push it forward, but in retrospect you can see the seeds of ineptitude that Lucas brought to fruition in his prequels. Meanwhile, Endgame is in good hands-- the Russos have given us three great movies, and it's not a stretch to imagine Endgame will the be fourth.

3. Marvel has a loooong track record of success. Again, this involves retrospect, but we know something now that we didn't when Jedi came out-- Lucas is something of a hack when it comes to directing films. He has great ideas, and he has his moments, but we've seen that when he's allowed to work unchecked he gives us crap. The influence he had over Jedi is apparent in this regard. Marvel, on the other hand, has a solid team in place that knows what it takes to produce great films, and at this point they're what... 19 for 19?

But for a couple scenes I didn't care for Infinity War so I would so say Endgame can only surpass it in every way possible. All they have to do is make the same movie with a happy ending.

The ending's happiness is purely a matter of your perspective. Infinity War followed the traditional arc of an epic poem, and Thanos undertook a hero's quest. He was victorious, so in the classic sense, it did have a happy ending. The hero overcame the obstacles in his path and completed his quest.

Side note-- I thought Infinity War was masterfully paced and edited, and while certain scenes stand out as especially well-made, nothing in the film lagged or bored me, even on repeat viewings. So I wonder-- what were the scenes you enjoyed?

The Spider-Man ones. I tried to watch this last night and couldn't get past the opening scene. I've still only seen it the one time. Hated the new Spider-Man movie. But Spidey's scenes in this film were spot on.

We have very different taste in film... I think Homecoming is a masterpiece, not only in the superhero genre, but as a film in general. Meanwhile, my favorite moments of Infinity War involved Thor, especially the forging of the axe, and his arrival in Wakanda. That last scene in particular is my single favorite moment in any comic book film. I've never before or since seen a movie theater transform into a cheering sports arena the way it did with that scene.
