Breaking: Premiere first reactions

The first act of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY can be hit and miss clunky. But once Donald Glover's Lando shows up (who is legit fantastic) and the Kessel Run heist plot kicks in, it's a whole lot of fun. (And those who've always wanted a Han and Chewbacca shower scene are in luck.)

I figured if @DisneyStudios was willing to show 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' a few weeks before release it must be good and it absolutely is. Film is a blast and a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe. @RealRonHoward you did a great job. Congrats. pic.twitter.com/1pkWH2y6qE

#SoloAStarWarsStory: It takes a bit for it to find its feet and for AE to turn on enough charm to make you forget he’s not HF. But once it kicks into its hey-let’s-make-a-crew and yes-also-do-a-heist stuff, it totally flies.

After seeing #SoloAStarWarsStory I can confirm one thing: bank on Lando: A Star Wars Story getting a green light by the end of the year. Donald Glover continues to be perfect. pic.twitter.com/ipjq0rcEtX

#Solo is afun! I was pleasantly surprised that it worked as well as it did given all the behind the scenes drama & retooling. Charming cast, fun action, good jokes, good fan service but still does its own thing. #StarWars will be fine.

Alden Ehrenreich is the real deal, Thandie Newton is who I want to be when I grow up, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s L3… well we’ll talk about that later. 😃 #SoloAStarWarsStory

#SoloAStarWarsStory is reaaaaalllly good. Fun as hell. It’s a straight intergalactic heist movie, kind of refreshing to see a Star Wars movie w/o a Death Star or the rebellion’s fate at stake. Alden Ehrenreich is super impressive as Han, but L3 might be my favorite new character.

seems like same problems as Rogue One, first act is a mess, heavy on fan service, but its ends fine/fun

I knew it would be a hit. Every film is a hit today.

I googled those same reviewer's "The Last Jedi" reviews and found five of them. All were very positive ones. Hmm, could those free preview/premiere movie tickets have anything to do with it?

Kevin Polowy - on Twitter: "Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a triumph.

Conner Schwerdtfeger - I just saw #StarWars #TheLastJedi and holy hell is it a masterpiece in a lot of insane ways. I think the standout factor is @rianjohnson’s A+ direction. There has never been a Star Wars Movie like this. To be clear: #StarWars #TheLastJedi has some story and character issues. It’s a little overcrowded and wastes some of the characters but those are really minor quibbles in the grand scheme of how much I liked it.

Kate Erbland - the second film in the newest trilogy shines its brightest light on compelling and complex female characters, from Rey and Leia to Rose and Captain Phasma — and many more.

Steven Weintraub - Got to see 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' in Sao Paulo this morning in @IMAX. Absolutely loved it. @rianjohnson did a tremendous job and I understand why he was asked to develop a new trilogy. Can't wait to see it again.

Mike Ryan - I wrote about THE LAST JEDI. With everything going on with me, it was a way too emotional experience. I loved it. I cried. And it's the first time a cry has felt good in what seems like forever.

Masterpiece? Complex female characters - Phasma? Rose was compelling? Cried?

Please don't drink the Kool-Aid. Wait for credible sources and not these stooges.

Yep, I'm listening to the early buzz but I'm also waiting to see what Metacritic and RottenTomatoes have to say.

reply

Good job. Those reviews are now officially worthless.

OTOH, if someone who honestly and accurately reviewed TLJ gives Solo a thumbs-up, that would be a good sign.

reply

They may be over-praising Glover and the female droid because politically that's the correct thing to do. From what Ive seen in trailers the female droid seems really annoying.

I don't doubt the movie will be sort of fun though for average moviegoers. I mean how cant it be, it's a big production with a lot of shooting and action etc....

reply

Sounds like this might be a much improved chapter over the last SW movie. Let's hope so! SW deserves better than TLJ. What a steaming pile of Banta droppings that was!

reply

I guess I'm one of the few that loved TLJ. Either way, this is very promising news for Solo.

reply

Sounds like Han Solo is a guest star in his own movie.
