I Smell A Flop LOL

This is going to be a Disaster

Yes I agree, I can’t help feeling this too. The trailer was rubbish.

I hate to say it, but I don't think it will be a flop. Now that's not an endorsement or me saying that somehow it's going to be good. People are still eating up the Star Wars movies, though I don't understand why. It may be a little bit softer at the box office than the last one, but Disney will keep milking them out for the time being.

reply

Whether it's good or bad remains to be seen, but either way, this will still make money hand over fist, guaranteed.

reply

I like how people say it will flop but don't bother to explain what numbers it would have to make for it to be a flop.

You might as well just say a flop is any movie you don't like regardless of the box office.

reply

Even if Solo makes another billion, the trolls will do all sorts of bizarro math to try and justify calling it a flop. Just look at all the Rain Man shit they did to try and convince people that The Last Jedi flopped.

reply

Good point.

reply

It didn't flop but some people fail to see just how much money these films need to make to recoup Disney's $4B investment. If you stuck that in a bank account and got 5% interest you'd be looking at $200M a year for doing fuck all... This is why we now have Star Wars movies coming out of the wazoo and is presumably why we now have a trilogy that was rushed out before they actually figured out a coherent story for it.

reply

Ah, the idiot again that doesnt even know the idfference between conspiracies and simply business practices. What are you bubbling mindlessly today?

reply

Well saying its a flop is a bit strong. Its a matter of how it performs as it relates to other Star Wars films. For instance, TLJ is not a flop per se, but the steep drop off was probably more significant than what Disney would have expected or wanted. I think you base Solo off of R1 really, it should perform better, if it doesn't than that is a bad sign. I am not sure we are at a flop stage yet...Star Wars name still carries a lot of drawing power regardless of the quality it is attached to. You could probably make a shot for shot remake of the Holiday Special and it would probably pass 500 mil.

reply

There's no metric that Solo should outperform Rogue One. Nobody was asking for a Solo movie, which is where the stigma of this movie stems from.

If it makes any profit at all, it's not a flop. That's how it works. So if the production budget is $200 mil or under, and the advertising budget is $100 mil or under, it would need to make $600 mil to guarantee a profit. If it makes $900 mil, they've made their money back plus at least 50%, possibly even 100% depending what the exact budgets were.

Are you really gonna call $900 mil a flop for a movie nobody asked for? C'mon, man. It sounds like you are preemptively creating an excuse to call it a flop. Rogue One had a shit ton more hype behind it.

reply

Correct which is why it can’t really be called a flop since it’s extremely unlikely to perform so badly. However it can be compared to the performances of others within the universe that is a fair metric. If Solo is successful I think it would outperform R1. It’s not an official standard but I am sure Disney has an expectation I would believe the benchmark of low would be a R1 performance. BvS made money it was still a disappointment because it failed expectations. I would find it unlikely that Disney’s expectations for Solo when it was green lit to be below the performance of R1.

reply

Let's not forget that Disney's been releasing Star Wars films in December. The last time we had a May release was for Revenge of the Sith, and that was more of a franchise film than Solo which serves more as a standalone.

reply

It will be a flop among hardcore fans. But I'm sure it will still turn a profit. The average moviegoer isn't a film aficionado.

reply

Won't flop no matter how bad it is. People will pay to see bad movies if it's in a universe they adore. That's how movies like Batman v. Superman can make so much money despite being universally panned.
