He captured two of the townsmen and tortured one to point to where the town was then murdered them both.
Ellie felt like she needed both guns, side arm and rifle, in her failed attempt to get the men to chase her.
He showed him on the map and it was done badly with the knife pointing. But it was only name of the town. Joel gets out of the house and has no idea in what direction he should go as he doesnt even know on what street he is on and number of the house. In reality he would have to wonder that town for a while to understand where that resort is.

It's a TV show so of course it works out for the psychopathic "good guy" murderer but not the others even though he was outnumbered and should have still been weaker.
It was also hilarious how all those experienced men with rifles starve and eat people because they cant hunt anything. But then Ellie goes for 10 minutes into the wood, sees rabbit and then shoots a deer. Lazy writing.
It was even more hilarious when she takes horse and tries to lure them away but instead of going a little apart at least - she just screams at them when they are few feet away. Which made them turn and shoot her horse in a second. I sarcastically applauded when that happened. And said: "Great, you idiot".
I didn't care for the animal cruelty depicted.
Interesting that she happens to know where to find them to scream at them and all of a sudden she knows how to ride a horse at full gallop?
Yeah, if she is so smart then when walking back to the house after she got the medicine she should have made tracks in all sorts of directions to confuse them.
Yeah. Not covering tracks bothered me too. Went straight to the house.
